Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Changes vs Adelaide

Some Adelaide fans are saying Jacobs should be rested because Gawn will smash any ruckman they throw out there anyway.  Quite a surprisingly sensible lot compared to the Carlton fans from last week.  No way I'd rest Max, he's a huge part of why we are winning at the moment.  Apart from Steph Martin, who almost broke even, he has flogged every ruckman he has come up against.  Let him wait for the bye for a rest.

As much as I love Hunt and Garlett I can't see them taking anyone's spot after the Carlton match.

No way Bernie gets rubbed out either, there's no charge for a fair bump.  His shoulder was at head level but there was no contact with the head.  It was all in the hip.  More good luck than good management though I reckon.

Gee I enjoy a good shirtfront., or watching a good shirtfront I should say.  Kudos to Thomas for getting straight up and getting involved in the contest again.  It would have hurt.

Rest Max across the fwd line? And swing into/out of the ruck?

Gee I loved ANBs and Milkshake's games. Watching the showreel.

Epic.

I don't share that view as a concrete rule.

In adverse conditions i'd pick for those conditions.

I did think it was in Darwin this week.

But the Alice will be hot, so we need to protect for this game, and the match following.

Edit: wrong comment.

Alice, 27 on Sunday, game at 3.20 Eastern, so 2.50 there? What time does the heat come off there at this time of year? 4ish? So 2 quarters in the warmth.

Not that the warmth isn't a good thing, and 27 isn't boiling.

What day does the team land to acclimatise.

I thought Bull competed well enough to be a backup ruck.  Aside from West Coast nobody plays two genuine rucks anymore.  Bull is capable of giving Max  rests he needs during quarters.  Not sure who Adelaide use as a backup but I'm sure Bull won't be a liability in there.

A seven footer resting forwards would give the defenders nightmares.

Hi all, first time poster, long time reader.

A lot of valid points here but for me I don’t think there needs to be any changes. The team is very settled at the moment and you can see that in the way they are playing.

Big Max is playing as if he’s fresh as a daisy. I think the match comittee and performance staff are managing his time perfectly. Just remember in 2016 he was the only ruckman in our team and played 90-95% in the ruck. We didn’t have the luxury of resting him forward like we do now. He’ll rest when the bye comes.

Spargo provides the spark we need when the ball is in our forward 50. He chases, harasses, tackles and seems to get a lot of frees.

I don’t think Vince needs a rest, but he may be forced to depending on what the MRO decides.

Smith was more than valuable as well. Competed in the ruck, got balls to ground when out of position and layed tackles. Everything a coach wants.

And when you win like the way we did, anyone would be stiff to miss the following week.

Max has dominated most weeks, but I actually thought that Max struggled quite a bit against the Sun's ruck last week? Was it Witts?  seemed to get pushed off his line with throw ins for the best part of the game, but I think he tired as the game went on and Max came into his own, but certainly in the first half, I didn't think we got a lot moving in our direction from Max.

...Not a criticism, just an observation,

Garlett was in the best players yesterday. I have analysed what Spargo brings

And yes I like his grunt, and being where it is BUT he has no real speed and IMV Jeffy is still STILL IN MY BEST 22

Spargo has a rest this week and Jeffy comes in!

Garlett was brilliant in the Alice last year v the Suns

Fair call.  You don't hear much about Witts playing up on the GC but he's been really good, Maxy wore him down and ended up getting right on top the longer the game went on.  Even ended up snagging 6 votes in the AFLCA.

I think we rest him at our peril, our 'connection' as Goody likes to call it between Max and the mids is a big advantage for us, taking Max out of that equation for a week would result in a lot less clearances I suspect

We covered his loss admirably last year, as the mids adjusted their style and learnt to shark the oppo's taps, but taking him out for a week would upset the balance, and I really want to beat the crows.

Slightly off topic, but our improved connection seemed to arise once Brayshaw came back into the team.  Coincidence?

Still, Bernie was a little out of sorts today and his kicking in from fullback was nerve wracking. Salem did some good things but could not handle the physicality very well - hung back a few times. Give Bernie a rest for a week; put in Pedo if this is the game plan we intend to persist with as it would suit his utility function in the forward line. Maybe, just maybe, bring in Hunt for Salem for one week of his own redemption - his pace is still needed. Garlett might be needed now that we have discovered deep forwards behind the defenders.

We got 6 goals from kick ins.

Were they Bernie’s kick ins?

He definitely have one away.

The only change to my mind is bring in Jeff for the indigenous round (particularly as one of his family designed our jumper)! Nobody deserves to make way so possibly just give Vince a week off and let Lever represent our ex-Adelaide contingent!

p.s. Unfortunately, indigenous round or not, no room in this team for JKH (and Johnstone doesn’t warrant a call up)! Jetta, playing his usual role is a no-brainer.

We shouldn't be rewarding players because it's indigenous round.  We should be going in with our strongest side at every opportunity.

We just won by 109 points and, unless someone is injured, then we stick with the same side and reward them for that performance.

Spargo needs a rest??  Seemed to do OK on that chase-down and tackle that led to Clarrie's goal.  The game was so far over most Carlton supporters were already home in their sisters.  He didn't need to go that hard, but he did.  If he needs to be managed from a load perspective, I will leave that to the performance gurus at the club.  There is no visible evidence that he needs a 'rest' however.

Lets see how everyone pulls up.  No one knew Clarrie busted a finger, or that Weids had a tight calf.  I love the fact that we have a deep roster, and there is pressure for spots.

No reason to change from a performance perspective.

We aren’t exactly “rewarding” players Wiseblood just acknowledging that a) most clubs are responding to the spirit of the indigenous round, b) Garlett will pay his way (e.g. five goals last time we played Adelaide) and c) he will not disrupt our team structure.

Saw that on the AFL Facebook page but it sure looked like Hannan to me.

Still don't think Spargo needs a rest though, keep him in!

It still makes no sense.  His form hasn't been great at Casey while those who play in his position in our side have been excellent.  Why change it just because it's indigenous round?  That sends the wrong message to the playing group.  You play on merit, no matter what the round is.

A couple of posters offering up Smith’s stats. If we are being honest if we were asked straight after the game (without checking the numbers) for our thoughts on his game/impact would the two align?

In Viney was given another run in the two’s and Tyson played would we still call for no changes.

Regardless of the result we should be playing our best available.

Richmond has twice shown their willingness to drop Jack Higgins for big games despite handy form and a pretty lengthy winning streak ... until yesterday.

Personally I'd be taking Jeffy as it's our first major test since being touched up by Richmond and he's mega suited to the ground as he showed last year and the conditions and brings his own army of supporters - they love him up there and stand behind the goals watching his every move as they will be for Eddie as well this week. The umps takes notice as well and having him in is worth a couple of frees in this game - it's a case of horses for courses.

Spargo has shown good attack on the footy and is clever with his disposal and should travel with them. He'll get plenty more chances.

Our strongest side is with a fit and firing Jeffy working his butt off. I accept he doesn't always bring that but I'd reckon he will this week and he's had what is it - four weeks to think about it in the magoos - and the signs are there that he's getting it.

That was actually Hannan. The commentators incorrectly called him as Spargo.

I don't think Spargo needs a rest yet, but his impact is definitely down the past two games compared to his first two. He'll probably be first to make way once Jeffy or someone else more proven finds form. That's nothing against Spargo, he's a first year player and has a long career in red and blue ahead of him!

There is a lot to like about Spargo and he looks a good pick up so far. However, he is only 18, and I think Garlett at his best offers more at this stage. I know Garlett was out of form earlier this year but I think it was partly due to our lack of talls in the forward line and the way we were kicking inside 50. I would make the change this week.

The other possible change would be Smith out for Hunt or Bugg. This would be only due to the bigger size of the Alice Springs ground and the high forecast temperature rather than Smith's form, as he was pretty good against Carlton.

Agree on Garlett, our structure early wasnt working and we ended up bombing to jeffy out numbered quite a bit in early rounds

I would like to see him now we are getting better inside 50 entries.

Either way happy to leave spargo in as he has done everything right and current forward dynamic is working

Probably no change.

Hannan wasn't great imo and he has this habit of flying for marks with one arm, but I suspect he holds his place.

Unlike some, I'm not much of a Tim Smith fan, but you want to give him a decent run at it while Weideman is injured.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
