Did you really need to pitch it like that?? Just put it on ignore if it doesnt float your boat, without being a [censored] about it.

My issue with this thread is that the opening poster has named 3 "Best 22s" since he started the thread (which was 8 days ago).

We've also had people that have tried to contribute, but have listed t a team with less than 22 players (which says more about where they rate our list than the poster themselves).

It's also an issue with player personnel, in the way of form and availability (you can't tell me at top form, Jeffy isn't miles ahead of Spargo).

We also have umpteen Best 22 threads, so I'm wondering why the need to create another one.  But even they are laughable, given the amount of people that actually name more than 22 players in the team (ie they may have a position where they will put, for example, ANB/Melksham/Fritch).  We're asking for our best 22, not best 25 or 16.

I'm happy to read all threads, but I was directly asking Werridee about this one, with the particular emphasis (in my mind) about the very first point I made.

But to humour me, how would you have preferred I "pitched" my initial post?

But you couldn't provide a best 22... ?

Everyone’s is different.

I’d rather look at our core who will play the majority of games going forward and look at which other positions are up for grabs.

From what I’ve seen this year so far my best 22. I’ve liked Weidermans game this year but doesn’t hit the scoreboard enough for me.

B: LEVER, O.MCDONALD, JETTA

HB: VINCE, HIBBERD , SALEM

C : PETRACCA, OLIVER, TYSON

HF: KENT, HOGAN, MELKSHAM

F: GARLETT, PEDERSEN, HANNAN

FOLL: GAWN, JONES, VINEY

IC: BRAYSHAW, HUNT, FRITSCH, SPARGO

Not only that, but he seems to post a best 22 in every thread he enters.  In caps.

Your points are well made, Chazz.  I think this thread does highlight the fact that a best 22 does change from week to week based on form, injuries and the opposition we are playing, but that also highlights how futile threads like these are.

Maybe mix it up.

For example you could do the best 22 from the 70's, or the best 22 of a team of players recruited to Melbourne or the bets 22 from our premierships or what about our best 22 of NQRs and delisted players since 2000 (so many to choose from!)?

Binman you must be one of those rare males that can multitask!

How can Tom McDonald not be in the side? I'd have Weideman in over Pederson. I was very pleasantly surprised by his game. I actually thought he was a dud but on what I saw I've reversed my thinking. He moves really well and took a couple og fantastic marks that we waited and waited for Watts to take but he never did.

Well done, I guess.

HB       Hibberd      Lever        Salem

C           Hunt           Viney

HF        Spargo       Hogan

FF        Garlett     Weideman    Petracca

FOLL    Gawn         Oliver        Brayshaw

INT       T - Mac     Jones

I would seriously question Hunt being a core player. We all love the pace, the torps and the headband, but he's back to routinely murdering the footy and bombing it in long to no-one. It's not good enough.

Literally the only argument I can see for him right now is how lacking we are in outside run. That alone can't be enough for where we are at and where we want to go. He needs to improve quickly because his season thus far has been disappointing considering his trajectory last year.

If we get through this week unscathed we have Viney and Salem coming back and will have our best team on the park.

Surely the best 22 are the guys selected for the upcoming game? Anything else is a wish list.

The only certainties for me are:

FB:  Jetta.   OMac.    Lever

HB:  Hibberd.  ???     ???

Cen:   ????        Oliver.      ???

HF:    ???     Hogan.   Petracca

FF:   ???     TMac.    ???

Ruck: Gawn, Jones, Viney

Just pick whoever is fit/in form for the rest as they are far to unpredictable.

Im positive on the Weid being a lock from next year so hopefully T Mac will go back to CHB and our spine will be set for the next 6-8 years.

Agreed.  And I think this is where Viney is comming from.  I dare say I don't think there is a side in the comp that has a 'best 22', such is the nature of things.

Would probably be better to talk about which players are a lock in the side and then the present next most likely to fill the remaining spots.  Amongst the later group you could probably categorise as fringe battlers, vets hanging on and developing players on the up.  In reality, I think any side needs a mix of all three groups and I've got no problems with us having a few fringe players that help get us across the line... so long as the mix is right.

Under the Demonland code of conduct it's an offence to abuse another poster.

With this in mind I will definitely not say you're an ignoramus.

Forward line looked dynamic.

Fritsch, Spargo, Hannan looked electric.

Throw dogbite, Garlett and a tall or two, and it may do well.

Not sure about Weid yet. Not with Hogan and Tom, anyway. Too heavy.

Ideally, they will move towards a soccer style bench system, and we can have a lock full forward again, and see guys kicking bags of 12. The modern day athletic footballer gets boring. Bring back the FF who dosnt go past the 50 arc, and bascially, is not fit enough to get past the arc.

Good thread.

It'll always be in a state of flux.

As I’ve said countless times, inside mids playing stop gap roles, (ANB and Tyson) is not an answer going forward.

These guys might be playing there now, but over the next couple of years, our core will stay the same and we’ll keep adding jigsaw pieces like we’ve done with Hibberd, Lever, Spargo and Fritsch etc.

Vince and Lewis were needed for experience and leadership, but their positions will be up for grabs over the next year or so.

I’d rather outline the core of a 22 and leave some positions open that will be filled over the next two to three seasons.

B  Jetta          O Mac      Lever

HB Hibberd      Tmac       Salem

C    Hunt           Viney

HF  Petracca Hogan  Melksham

FF  Spargo   Weideman

FOLL    Gawn Oliver  Brayshaw

Agree with a lot of your post but always see Lever as the third tall floating across to intercept.  I see a lot of faults in Gaffs game but our inside depth sees him as a good target for us to play that wing role. He has 4 to 5 years left.

Hannan, Fritsch, Nibbler and a couple of others will float in and out of the side. I think Jeffy is in decline and in 2 to 3 years wont be with us.

I'll give this a go as it is always a bit of fun.

One thing I feel we've got wrong to start the season and that was rectified against the Bombers is the balance within the side. We have played some players who may be 'in form', but including them limits the overall team. Wagner is the prime example, I'm not knocking him as I think he has been decent, but really he is fighting for a similar spot to Hibberd and having them both seemed to hurt our drive from the backline. I also think we were playing too many 'inside' type players and need the outside run, with Hannan provided last week.

B:      Jetta           O Mac         Hibberd

HB:   Hunt           Lever           Lewis

c :     Salem         Jones         Vince

HF:   Trac            Hogan         Melksham

F:     T Mac          Weid            Garlett

R:     Gawn          Oliver           Viney

Int:  Tyson          Brayshaw      Hannan       Fritsch

Emg:  Spargo      Frost        Harmes      Neal-Bullen

This is assuming all players are at their best. I love little Spargo but if Garlett finds his best form he is a proven, 40 goal a year small forward so he has to be in. I think Harmes and Neal-Bullen have good potential and are long-term players but they just miss out and Frost is an obvious back-up for a tall if required.

I didn't like when we played the small forward line, I don't think it works for us and you need genuine gun small forwards which we probably don't quite have. We need to play to our strengths and the biggest is that we have two of the most mobile KPF's in the game in Hogan and TMac so Weid can easily play as the 3rd tall and back up ruck.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
