I think you have hit the 'secret' of their turnaround from 2016 to premiers in 2017.

At the end of 2016 Richmond recruited Blake Caracella as Midfield Coach - spread and ball movement.  He has been credit with transforming their game plan from hand-balling backwards and in circles to a slick forward ball moving team.  It took a while in 2017 to fine tune their spread and ball movement and it really came together in September.  

In our coaching structure we do not have a Caracella role.  I assume it falls into Plapp's role as midfield coach with buy in from other field coaches.  

Our overall plan is players to the contest and we don't seem to have a spread and ball-movement plan so we look stagnant and our players look uncertain. 

The big question is:  how do they fix our ball-movement problems quickly.

Viney comes back into the side and we get Salem playing more of an outside mid role.  His our best finisher and ball mover through the middle by far and we need to get him onto moving the ball forward more often.

Viney of himself is no answer to our dilemma. He helps our cause. Doesn't solve it.

Better ball movement is by design...by practice... instructions .

I simply think theyre being taught a bogus style.

I went to the game Tuesday night & just watched the replay of the 1st quarter.  I am no expert at footy but the weakest links in the first quarter to me looked to be Vince, Tyson, Harmes, Salem & Brayshaw.

Add Stretch & ANB to that too.....  Not great really.  7 out of 18 players......  Need I say more !

Obviously the "game plan" isn't to play stagnant kick-down-the-line footy. We are being forced into that style of play. The question is why and how do we get back to playing the way we want to play.

I think it was the game plan. But Only when under the pump slow, it down clog it up and make it hard for them to score when we don't have momentum. We only did it alot in the 2nd qtr when we were under siege. I know Townsend helped us by missing the unmissable but other than that we did well to stall their scoring in that qtr  3 goals to 1 is much better than the last qtr when we tried to attack without momentum and got ripped to shreds.

Why are we being 'forced' ? 

We hardly switch. We have stopped opening up the fat side. We're getting coraled ...yes...but allowing it.. Its what it looks like to me....and i don't think im too lonely in that.

It’s a timid panic style of football in reaction to being easy to score against. Being hard at the contest did not disguise this. No teams get forced to not try a switch in direction. The players and coachs were definitely spooked bad by Hawthorn and feared another demolition this time in a big prime time game as I don’t recall we have played this way for a very long time.

I'd assume it's partly reactionary atm to address the issue of teams getting a run on too easily and frequently against us.  Also due to lack of confidence which has somewhat circumed the team in recient weeks.

We had numerous opportunities to switch play and didnt take them. We also had plenty of opportunity to chip kick quickly repeatedly  to break up the zone defence. we didn't take these either. We practiced for this a lot on the pre-season but it has gone the way of the Dodo.

We had them on the ropes at the end of the third we just couldn't land the next blow

Richmond get a run on in the 4th and as it has been this season we couldn't stop it, unfortunately we didn't have a fifth qtr to right the situation

All the talk about game plans etc is just that,  talk, we just need to maintain the rage for 4 qtrs

What game were you watching ?

On the ropes ? We were 3 goals down. Until Milkshakes snag we hadn't goaled for 20 mins.

From  a mate who watches tiges every week they bring it to ground 8 out of 10 times crashing the contest in the air .  Regardless  if its the smallest player competing . They work to get front of the pack and back because they know its coming.

Harmes Brayshaw and a host of players were not competitive in the air Tuesday  night . Its as if only our talls are marking or competent options and we have that mindset .

its time to drill down and fix this .

One thing I did notice the other night was Richmond players were always front and centre and we rarely had any. I mean this is bloody basic stuff, you learn this in mini league.

Well I was talking blockbusters rather than Friday/Sat night games but it’s in a similar mould I guess. Do you think we make a good case for blockbuster games with 12 years out of the finals and 40 odd thousand members?

St Kilda got the Good Friday game plus back-to-back home Friday night games this year against Carlton and Richmond.

They're worse than us and pulling half the crowds we are, and finished behind us last year.

The Dogs have four Friday nights and a Thursday night. They also finished behind us last year with smaller crowds.

We get ANZAC and QBD, plus one interstate Friday night game. Then a whole lot of low-drawing rubbish (including 10 Sunday games). 

That was infuriating.

When I wrote this I was still too annoyed. I didn’t really take Friday night games into consideration I was mainly thinking public holiday type blockbusters eg Easter Monday, Anzac eve/day, QBD etc but thinking about it that all does make sense.

I guess I’m just frustrated that we’ve worked our rear ends off to get these big games which I think are fantastic for everyone involved and it would be nice to show that we’re worthy of them for years to come.

Put aside the fact that our structure is all wrong and we are stagnant with our ball movement, it's the way they work for each other, break tackles, make tackles, clear the ball form contested situations and spread compared to us that had me most concerned.

It's  fine to do the little things better than the next side, but these little things have to be done within the rules, or else someone is getting an unfair advantage which brings unfair results.

 To be honest i thought our work rate in the first half at least was the equal to, if not more intense than, theirs

We have streamlined scoring doubts. We could put two more Umpires in the field (get rid of useless runners, etc) to pick up non handballs,illegal disposals and any other cheating behind play, without much fuss.

I think you're right. But for what gain?

No point expending all that energy just so we can score 2 behinds from our 85 forward entries and then run out for the last quarter exhausted only for them to casually put the foot down and canter home.

These things happen right in front of the existing umps and are not called. Every game every round, the umpiring is arbitrary, inconsistent and performed by the 3 blind mice. Not that that is in any way acceptable, but we haven't been losing due to the woeful umpiring.

Noticed any perceptible time limit differential on how long the mark has to be held for?

Carlton have lost 14 of their last 15 games. We make a better case than them.

Great to see Jesse get some votes.  This game, last year was the last his very ill dad watched him play and was special enough for Jesse to have the words 'do it for dad' written on his wrist bandage.  Damn shame the team couldn't bring it home for him.
