Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

In: Lewis, Fritsch

Out: Kent (inj), Harmes

A lot of the lesser players were poor, like Stretch, ANB etc.  I picked Harmes because he's been the worst over the journey for mine.

Stretch had a really poor game as well, but I would like to see us persist, even if it's only one more match.  He had the fumbles real bad - I think this could improve with drier conditions, some confidence and a better feel for the pace of the game.

Fritsch selected because I think he's probably the best of the options available at Casey.  Also the fact that he didn't play this week helps - he will be fresh.

Pedersen's 5 goal haul for Casey is great, but he is a specific role player and the role we might require him for is not currently vacant.  Competing with Weideman for mine, and the Weid did enough to stay in. No doubt we will use him again this year, just not yet.

Not too interested in shuffling any other players around.  I really don't see the point in swapping ANB etc for Hannan or a debutante.  One NQR for another.  That just becomes change for the same of it.

ANB goes if TMac is ready.  I would attempt to play a three tall forward line with TMac, Weideman and Hogan; especially with the amount of turf TMac and Hogan would cover.

Give me someone who can kick 5 goals please and is a proven performer

Pedersen has never kicked more than 3 goals in an AFL match.  He is more likely to be a complete passenger when played as a forward than he is to kick 5 goals.  His career high goals for an entire season is 18, and that was when he was with North.  There is a good reason why he has never been a permanent fixture in the side.

Proven performer? Massively overrated on this site IMO.

Let's play spuds like Stretch, Harmes and ANB instead that's working well. Reward VFL form.

You're right.  Let's replace spuds with other spuds, that'll make a huge difference! (I don't think Pedersen is a spud at all, just a role player that we don't need at present. Just arguing at the level you brought this conversation to)

I'm not going to be sucked in by a good, or even great performance by a 31 year old at VFL level.  We know what we will get with Pedersen, and it's nothing we have a pressing need for at present.

Out. Vince Kent (inj) Anb

in. Spargo (debut) Fritsch Pedersen

Tough on Stretch after only one game. So many others who are being gifted with regular games who are doing nothing.

Cannot develop any confidence if he gets shafted after one game.

Will player management come into play as well and rest players who are sore post Tuesday. Kent definitely out, Jetta has a sore ankle and Bernie is 32. I don’t believe you drop Stretch after 1 high intensity game as he needs another week to adapt to the pace. On form Harmes needs time at Casey and Garlett is on shaky ground.

Fritch to come in for sure for Kent the rest is a lottery. I would love to see Spargo get a chance soon. Baltic had a hammie problem  and wont be promoted yet.

Note Essendon have their own problems with Begley & Green out and Tippinwaty carrying a knee.

He's a woeful footballer who has never done anything. Lucky to get a game in the first place our lack of depth got him a game. He's had his chances time to rot in the VFL like JKH.

As usual, everything is relative.

If I asked those questioning our depth to list the best 6-8 players outside the best 22 of other clubs I'll either have one or two clubs mentioned or there'll be crickets.

Not many clubs have great depth and ours currently looks worse due to form.  Our depth is fine compared to most other clubs.

I'm a fan of Fritsch and Hannan, so wouldn't be averse to having both come in.  Like others, I've questioned whether they can play together, but I suspect they can.  That's why we have coaches.  Let's make it work.

Our lack of depth is criminal, and is why I was so upset by our lack of activity during last year's trade / draft cycle. We had to turn the list over by 4 - 5 more players (Vandenberg, McKenna, Johnstone, Kennedy-Harris and Filopovic were obvious starting points), even if it was just to get a couple of rookie picks. And then when we do get some picks we waste them on even more slow, inconsistent half forward flankers.

Our bottom 8 or so players on Tuesday were truly awful and you could make a case for dropping all of them. Harmes, Stretch and Neal-Bullen have to go, plus Kent is injured (yet again). Vince and Garlett are close to the end of the road. If we wanted to play Weideman it should have been against Brisbane - he is miles away from being able to compete against the best sides. Wagner was invisible after the first quarter and Jetta still looks injured to me. Thankfully Lever and Melksham lifted from last week.

In: Pedersen, Hannan, Spargo, Balic

Out: Stretch, Neal-Bullen, Harmes, Kent

McKenna - contracted and was back training at the start of preseason
Johnstone - contracted, coming in to his 2nd year and we need to develop small forwards. Should be played down back at Casey to learn how to win more easy footy but more often that not his tackle numbers are up. Bit early to give up on him.
JKH - received a contract mid last year presumably to give him belief to persist with dominant VFL form and break back in. Poor decision mid year but I get the logic
Vanders - the club rates him as do I, with 45 on the list we can afford one long term injured player
Flippers - young ruck, the club are clearly trying to develop the next ruck after Gawn now rather than later, if not him it would be another ruck in his spot

Balic has a tight hammy so forget about him.

Otherwise there is Hannan,  Frost, Pedersen, Joel Smith, JKH, Maynard and Bugg (who was contracted) plus three draft picks in Fritsch, Spargo and even Petty all available to come in and whilst there's no world beaters there all of them (besides the young guys) have performed to some level at AFL.

Also, Weideman competed just fine against the best backline in the AFL. He needed match fitness at Casey before he was ready to come in. It's too early to say he's really right to go as a long term player but aside from one terrible shot for goal he did a lot right.

The biggest problem with our list is our top 7 or so A graders mostly aren't truly elite reliable performers yet and our decent B graders (say 8th to 18th picked each week) depth is a little short of what we need with some older guys (Lewis, Vince, Garlett) falling out of that category and leaving us without a good solid small forward or outside mid. No point getting caught up with the C graders who fill out the last 4-6 spots each week.

Is that how you really feel?

"To rot in the VFL Iike JKL"

My point is that unlike others he has not had much chance to show his capability. If he does not improve over 2 or 3 games fair enough, he probably deserves to be dropped but not to rot.

Not when you compare him with who was getting picked ahead of him, spud Dawes and a not ready Weideman.(last year) I think Pederson has shown he should have been in ahead of those two.

Im sure it was pretty hot on Tuesday night, but for me, Billy didn't just not handle it early.. he didn't handle it all night and he wasn't on his own.

Big question is can we play the 3 talls, i think Pedo is a must to be in.. our football is better with him in the side,.

Fritsch has to play.. we need clean players like we need speed.

And i think its the right time to throw Spargo in.. i really do.. its might provide some spark. So..

IN: Pedo / Fritsch / Spargo

OUT: Stretch / Harmes  / Kent

Weideman has to stay. Needs games and was promising on Tuesday. He hasn't been setting the world on fire, but Fritsch just feels like he has the cleanness we need. Maybe Maynard comes in to allow Petracca more time forward? Garlett and Stretch get one more chance for me.

I know the veil (of negativity) is well and truly down, but I think we're a chance to destroy Essendon this week. They are lost. We played hard footy on Tuesday and lost to a better team. Contain Stringer, Merrett, Daniher and we're set.

Tmac comes in if ready and we play three talls.

I'm sick of Pedo. Plays a great game and is then useless for the next 3. Goes back to the twos and plays good footy prompting everyone to demand he needs to come back. He went back for a reason. I'm over it and would rather we get games into Weid.

What was the reason he went back? No one knows, People were shocked when he was dropped lucky we played a good game since then we have been rubbish.

Goodwin doesn't know what he's doing at the selection table. Maynard over Tyson, everyone over Brayshaw, Wagner over Hunt, Stretch over Fritsch, Bugg over Pedersen all woeful decisions. He is more than due to make the right decisions.

uurrrggghhh. I don't completely disagree but also, Brayshaw definitely didn't pick himself on pre season form. Hunt is and was out of form. I kind of thought Stretch came in for Bugg. I thought Pedo being dropping was called for given his performance.

The replacements for our problem players aren't super obvious in my opinion.

Also, I'd be tempted to give Brayshaw a bit more mid time if it means that Petracca can get more time forward.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
