Sir WYL, from reading various articles it is not too hard to work out the 'older' and the 'younger' members of our leadership group who may have been at loggerheads over cancelling the camp.    Certainly, the words 'frank' and 'robust' discussions have been used extensively by several club reps.

So, connect the dots.

Was their disunity?  Is the disunity still there as Carey claims?  Who knows.

Lets hope we have learnt our lesson and everyone can move on.

Frank and Robust are Media words that cover a large distance

PP obviously knows more...

I can't be bothered looking for all the media reports quoting our coach or players that used 'frank' or 'robust' regarding the camp.

But here is one from this week.  https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/jordan-lewis-says-melbourne-has-moved-on-from-cancelled-training-camp-after-frank-discussions/news-story/9ebf85a11d739a42f3908094cc5a72b4

Jordan Lewis:

“But at the end of the day, whoever is involved with the club, inside the club, and we’ve had some frank discussions — which I think has been beneficial to the group.” ...

...Would it have been better to do the camp? Probably. Would’ve we gone about it a different way? I would say yes,” ...But to say we’re weak and we’ve got a soft underbelly — I don’t know how you draw that conclusion, because he (Jonathon Brown) wasn’t involved in the decision process and he wasn’t involved in the robust discussions we had post that camp not going ahead.

... And we’ve done a mountain of work over the pre-season with developing relationships within the four walls..."

So 'frank' and 'robust' are not 'media words'.

It seems any disagreements have been sorted out and we move on.  This is what strong clubs do.

As with our various other perceived 'mental weaknesses' only time will tell whether the camp 'disagreements' or any 'disunity' lingers.  Win games and the question marks go away.

If your ref to 'PP' is ProperDee's post an hour ago, I think it is best he keeps what he knows to himself.

Disagreement doesn't automatically mean disunity, even within the leadership group.

In fact there is nothing more nauseating that unequivocal and effusive constant agreement.

In that environment there is no growth.

Correct, as long as those who are in disagreement can understand and accept the situation

Dees will lose to Geelong for the sole reason that they are not a united team based off the offseason camp fiasco.

From about 10 minutes.

Interestingly, in the Age today, 10 out of 12 tip Melb. to win.  The only 2 for Geelong are the only ex-players - Carey and Bob Murphy.

What might they know others don't?

I trust their judgement more, but hoped to proven wrong. This story will run and run until Sept.

Viney's on-field leadership will be sorely missed.

Big Call on the eve of the season PP

Can you elaborate any further? This whole episode has bothered me all season as an outside Member. I don’t know the player dynamics, but this club needs unity right now...

I don’t even like an SAS Camp, but if the Coach thinks it will improve the club, after last years choke, then you dam well put your head down and do it.

Can Goodwin count on those 14 who went behind his back?

I can also understand the players point (to a degree) if they had to continue injured in a camp last year without medical attention....

What if he is an ordinary coach?  Pressure is on him this year.  I really want to like him, but I'm wary.

I find it interesting that people are so ready to jump all over certain posters that make comments around watching our players train and talking to them and the coaches at training, but PD comes out with statements about the info he/she is privy to and some accept it like it's fact. How can we know without real corroboration ?

Tons more! What the hell does that mean?

Yes i agree, his ass is on the line this year, but that can be a positive.

We need some players to step up and it will be interesting to see who that is.

Isn’t the silly season wonderful!

As soon as the action starts, this will be quickly forgotten - unless we get thumped of course in which case it will be self fulfilling!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
