Season won't be defined in Round 1 so no point going all out when we will probably win without him.

Yeah we saw from rounds 19-21 how ordinary he was when not right. We need him at his best, id be willing to wait to round 2,3 or 4 to get him at the high level he’s capabale of when healthy

Sensible decision and let’s face it we have won in rd 1 the last 3 years and not made finals in any of them. Round 1 is overrated!

Was a key game in our last premiership year. Although we lost the season opener (narrowly) to Geelong we went on to beat them at Kardinia park and later claimed the premiership:

Why announce it now though? In doing so you gotta imagine he's going to miss the first few rounds.

To give them breathing space so when rnd 1 comes around and he is still a month from playing we’re a little more comfortable.

Disappointed mainly because I wanted to see him shitmix Selwood.

But, what a refreshing change to finally feel at ease with our midfield depth.

I understand why and it’s better we don’t risk it, but damn. There goes my hopes for round 1.

The right decision. Learning from the mistakes of last year.

Hoping he plays for Casey next weekend and can build for round 2 onwards.

Be aware, although he is a noted 'fast healer', it is against his best outcomes to return by Round 2. I'd reckon that he needs another month - even two - to improve the injury with limited training stress placed upon the injury. These days, C-V work and effective strength training to keep in tone can be quite easily and comprehensively managed; he will not lose his ball skills nor his drive. Training stress can then be undertaken with caution (of course) in the latter part of this continuing recovery and healing process. We are all very patient and considerate - no, understanding - of his real needs despite his great enthusiasm to return to the playing field with his team; however, he is too great an asset and personality to risk this rapid recovery and deployment. The MFC is Jay Viney.

What a great tribute to the inter-team rivalry and history. This brings back wonderful memories - it truly does - of Polly Farmer, Bill Goggin and Co. Goggin was the toughest footballer that I ever played against, without doubt. How well-written was this piece of journalism? It is a gem in the football genre.

I wouldn't want to be his first-up opponent in the VFL...

That is a very pertinent thought.

The wrong (and bad) decision was made to rush him back from surgery in the latter parts of last year. I apportion blame to the Docs/fitness staff, the coaches and Viney himself.

Had his injury been handled properly during its initial stages, he would've been ready to go come round 1. Given how tight the comp is to qualify for the 8, come year's end his unavailability may not only cost us a spot in last years finals, but this years as well.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but with finals on the line, can you blame the club for trying to rush him back as earlty as possible?

Ablett just announced he’ll be playing now.

That is so funny! What do you think are the chances of such a decision being correct? One can only laugh.

Not a shock at all.  Bet we don't see him until round 4 or 5.  Which is fine if it means his foot is 100%.

For periods of last season when Maxy, Chunk and Viney went down, I was impressed by our ability to just find a way.

We need to do that again.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
