Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Are we ready? Rory Sloane

Gaff is already too old for our profile.  2 years ago he may have fitted, but regardless the Eagles will throw plenty enough to keep him.

The big money for Sloane will come from Sydney, with $900k spare from Tippets retirement. North already had enough to offer Dusty and Kelly bucket loads (but who would want to go there?). Collingwood are all wind....Pendelbury is already the highest paid AFL player, and Treloar will be earning a motzza by now.  They won’t have enough left for a player like Lynch.

I think Tippet was signed until the end of 2020 which makes it more interesting.

According to Tom Harley in his interview on SEN Tippett's injury wasn't career ending and it was his decision to retire early so his payout will not be included in the salary cap after this year.

Tippett had a trigger clause in his contract for big bucks for a year or two extension but apparently he was very reasonable about it and agreed to take much less each year but extend the contract for longer to the end of 2020. As he has decided to retire early and end the contract apparently he agreed to a very fair payout. I think you'll find the salary cap space that opens up isn't as big as you think. It will still really help them though. Especially as next year is the last really big bucks year on Buddy's contract. It tapers off by about 50% from 2020 onwards.

I get the feeling from what Sloane has said that if he goes it will be back home to Vic. So assuming the money is the same that's where he'll end up. Don't know where.

i suppose, it, that we should also factor in that some (many?) swans have been underpaid in recent years (due to buddy, tippet) and might rightly expect (demand) some increased compensation?

Good point. Although they still have a predominantly very young list so other than Buddy would have some room. They could back end a contract because 2019 is the last big money year for Buddy.

The other thing which will come into play is the increase in the salary cap for everyone of around $2M.  It was effective from June 2017, but contracts would have already been signed for the 2017 year, so the can of worms opens in 2018:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-20/players-get-20-per-cent-pay-rise-in-new-cba

If you have a quality young list you will be able to pay them to stay with the extra money.  If you don't....then you go shopping.

They’ve already stated he could earn as much as 500k. That was late last season.

You'd need to offer more than that to keep a home sick Victorian on the GC. From what I've heard, the Vics especially that have played up there have struggled from a livelihood point of view. Regardless tho the GC is a shithole.

Depends on the individual. He could potentially get 1.2 from the Suns before the 500 from the AFL. No Victorian club could/would match that.

I'm sure he'll be happy to take up Travis Clokes old role presenting the sport once a month on Channel 9 news

500k would be in addition to his salary paid by the AFL as an "ambassador"

I wonder how much money the AFL will throw at him to stay at the Gold Coast. Wasn’t he going to be payed outside the salary cap as an ‘Ambassador’ if he were to stay at the Suns post 2018?

Either way he will earn a large packet and should easily set him up for life.

this 'ambassador' rubbish is just plain bribery and corruption

more afl policy on the run.  surely they can come up with better solutions to make their private franchises more competitive

They could try honesty and just say we're funding this more, bending our usual rules etc  because ..... <whatever>.  The reason given may just happen to be reasonable, or at least discussable.

I think we are past going for the big fish...

We have our own homegrown to look after now. Clubs will be knocking on Oliver's door, Petracca and others, lets keep this list together as long as it takes to get the elusive flag.

To me a player like Sloane would end up around our 3rd or 4th mid behind Oliver & Patracca and on par with Viney but we would be paying him number 1 mid money. Not a wise spend...

Look at needs and spend wisely...Hibberd is an example. Although not a free agent he fitted a real need to have quality run and disposal from defence.

Gaff maybe the one to look at but that depends on money and how some of our younger players come on.

Could not agree more. Our absolute priority needs to be locking Petracca away on a long term deal. Sloane is a good mid who can't play a tag. You don't pay overs for that type and you will need to to get him.

Devil's advocate- he wouldn't need to play a tag in our midfield so would get more space

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
