Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Boot Camp 2017 cancelled by Players

Goody covered this at the AGM that has just finished, after a ' question' from the floor

Stressed it wasn't a 'boot camp' , same as last year's wasnt either, and was being run by professionals

It was again an exercise to take the players out of their comfort zone

Obviously the players had some concerns and raised them, the Club has a duty of care towards the players and this was obviously taken into consideration

Clubs will try anything and everything, if the players have concerns about the exercise and not what benefits it will bring, what is the point continuing with it

One thing Goody said was the players thought it impacted their conditioning, nice opportunity next week to top it up?

If you take what the coach says at face value, it seems to me the players have done what we want them to do...take responsibility for getting the best out of themselves.

However, if you take the afl.com.au article at face value, it seems strange that the decision to pull the pin was taken so late and that there was a need to involve the AFLPA. (I'm not against the AFLPA, but wonder why it was necessary to go there.)

On balance, I would rely more on what the coach said (even if he was spinning it) than what has been published on the AFL's website.

Agree with this and for this to be needed to be addressed at the AGM is a concern.  Deal with it in house keep it in house don't let others get wind of a story that should be dealt with and put to bed.

Goodwin should tell his sports science team and Dave Minson to take a spell from training this week and turn the clock back to your 100 x 100's, put the balls away and have the flock them to death sessions.

That's a pretty good summary, LDC.  I'm inclined to take what Goody has said as a reflection on what has happened, although it's a little awkward to see this story get more media time.

I don't think we'll ever know, but it would be interesting to see which players were against it.  Clearly Spud doesn't know but he's knocked the leadership group anyway.

Either way, I still think this is getting fair bigger than it needs to be.  Goodwin and the players would have already moved on.

Not one incident but a pattern in the club, so suddenly the players know better than the coach.... if so then obviously Jones is a weak captain. Do the supporters really have to put up with this every few years... wouldn't happen at Hawthorn  or another club.

Another of a long list of embarrassing fails for the club.
Spot on with Jones, has always been one of the 1st to disappear when the going got tough.

The players have managed to add extra unnecessary pressure to their year by canceling this training. They must have known that it would give ammunition to all the haters and opposition teams. No amount of flogging on the track will soften what is going to come their way. Media is going to have a field day with it.

Good.

If anything the feeling of being collectively attacked might have the outcome the club was chasing from this camp. They will have to stick tight and have each others back more than ever.

That seems unnecessarily harsh.

I'm not an apologist, I just see the gravity of the situation differently.

Agreed, and the supporters need to move on. Too much analysis and interpretation for so little purpose.

Too much unnecessary negativity.

Frawley, the former head of the AFLCA, having a go at the players for seeking advice from the AFLPA.

What would Frawley have preferred, the coach and FD refuse to take on board the concerns of 1/3 of the list and push ahead anyway with a "my way or the highway" attitude?

so now we have a situation where:

trust between coaches and players has potentially broken down

one poster here is querying his membership. bound to be others out in the wider world

sponsorship ... great advertising for the club while they chase sponsors like a dog chasing pigeons. "we've thought of a slogan you can use: palmolive gold ... make your hands as soft as your mind! or this one ... hard yakka ... with a shot of our players watching some real hard guys pushing a huge truck up a---- hello? hello? goddam, they hung up"

no, we don't care what oppo clubs think, but our players on the ground might not enjoy the extra sledging they are going to get. who wants (eg) clarry spending all his time getting mugged rather than getting the ball? yes, they should be mentally strong enough to rise above that, but (i) are they???? (ii) why hand out free ammo to the enemy. might as well tell mitch starc that you'd prefer it if he didn't bowl anything short to you.

this whole affair is not a disaster as such, and may dissolve away to nothing in time. but it is a clear sign that while it is a hell of an uphill struggle to break away from ghosts of the past, we don't seem to be doing it. when accident victims are trying to learn to walk again, they usually don't put a bullet in their own foot.

I reckon half the blokes here judging our players as soft over this probably couldn't complete 20 good push ups or even finish the time trial run without dying

I trust the players made the right decision here. Don't let a slow news week get the better of you guys.

I've been apathetic about this, but on deeper reflection there are concerns.

Anyone with a bit of knowledge about the club knows the players love and respect Goody, however, there are a group of players that have either knowingly, or unwittingly, undermined the club, the coach and his preparations for the 2018 season.  It's poor.  Although, I doubt it will have any affect on game outcomes next year.

We don't know the players concerned, but I hope Tyson isn't involved considering his disappointment at getting injured at last year's camp.  I doubt Goodwin would need much of an excuse to hand his position to Corey Maynard.

The anti-union rhetoric.

word of advice: "neoliberal", "cultural marxist", "altright" and "SJW" are used either when the person is too lazy to form a coherent argument, or don't have the mental capacity to. I doubt you'r in either of those so please don't fall don't the rabbit hole of Millenial arguments 101.

I wasn't trying to be political and I'm not (overly) anti union. In a sports environment I think it's pointless having a union that does anything other than negotiate pay and player movement. A fwiw, you used "free market" in a negative sense but it's the union pushing for a more open free market of player movement.

An AFL team isn't a construction site

The players are a team's greatest asset and aren't anywhere near as replaceable as a guy on a construction site. It is within a team's utmost best interests to ensure players are safe and healthy. That players are running to the union in this instance undermines the club, its coaches and medical staff. It's not the same as a kid on a construction site running to the union because he feels unsafe. the kid knows he's expendable and his safety isn't a priority. He's not a key to finish the project.

Players running to a sports union because they feel "unsafe" is an embarrassment and major indictment on the club's intentions of gaining respect.

I'm not antiunion. I'm anti players running to the union because they train too hard. I'd love to see them put on a hardhat for a week.

Media hang [censored] on us for players getting injured at bootcamp last year, media hang [censored] on us for cancelling same bootcamp this year. And Campbell Brown saying it's so Melbourne. Kicking a player deliberately in the face and decking a teammate is so Cambpbell Brown. How is this guy allowed to be on radio. He should be in jail.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
