As well as whats been said, it would induce greater instability and uncertainty, greater media speculation, and endless rumour. 

The football hacks would love it.  That has to be bad. 

It's bad enough as it is but a mid season draft would be a disaster for the competition, and, as has been said, for weaker clubs. 

Opportunistic players, agents and clubs would prevail. And it would be a media frenzy.

I think mid season is a really good time to watch footy.

Unfortunately trade talk seems to run hot 12 months a year now and the primary product, footy suffers.

Maybe the idea is to devalue the game and make trading the primary product...

We have a great game, a pity the AFL work hard to devalue it little by little.

I'm unsure of how it would work in the AFL, I follow the NHL closely and they have a trade deadline around early March each year just prior to the play-offs commencing.

Teams vying for a play-off spot will look to acquire a seasoned veteran or a consistent scorer to enhance their chances whilst a team with no chance of making the play-offs will look to offload veterans to acquire young prospects or draft picks for future seasons.

Its basically a period of increased player movement. That's a simplistic way of explaining it.

The NHL regular season commences in early October and ends in early April.

Each team have a full five months to sort out their specific needs by the time the deadline arrives. 

In the AFL after five months we are at finals stage, not sure how they could manage a trade period mid-season in a shorter time frame.

Edit: Players that are signed by an NHL team participating in the play-offs prior to the deadline might only get signed up for the upcoming play-offs and can get offloaded to another team for the next season.

Now that Fairfax Media has sold off the Domain part of its business - I think we may see far more click bait content than in the past - the devil is always in the detail regarding all things AFL. I'm not going to loose any sleep over it until the AFL send it to a committee for "review" - then I will want to know if its a "extensive review", a "series review" or a "totes review".  

 

Now seriously I could not give a rats clacker.

I don't like it all. But contrary to the bolded, the argument is that it will contribute to equalisation - that a weak team is likely to get better value in a trade when the need is more urgent from a strong team. That point however is also open to speculation.

Yeah Yeah, but if that same team gets targetted every 2nd year by a team in the finals race they will never get off the floor.

Depends how good the footy dept is, if it’s Melb circa 2007 then that club is even more fked. If it has some ability then it could be a great opp to get some value for a player they may move on at the end of the season.

Hey guys. Just forwarding the argument from AFLHQ. It's not my own (although I don't agree or disagree with that specific point as I haven't given it any critical thought and mentally run through the likely or potential scenarios, primarily because I don't like the idea to begin with).  Carry on.

Surely both teams would have to agree to a trade.  It wouldn't be compulsory to trade a player away if you didn't want to or if you thought the deal was not to your team's advantage.

So now theres the prospect of supporting a crap team, but now theres a system in place to fleece your crap team of their best players halfway through a season, truely ending the year and putting your club further into the wilderness..

The elephant in the room is the clubs being able to trade players where they (the clubs) want.

The players hold too much power at the moment.

Until this is addressed then trade, free agency and other ideas the AFL bring in from the USA will always be half pregnant.

Let us hope you are right. I don’t trust the rules to be that stringent since Free Agency has been introduced. 

We The MFC have to get better and i mean the FD because players at the bottom clubs will get picked off. Clubs will be targetted twice a year under this new rule. 

We need to be a club targetting players, not the other way around.

Don't forget it would be a seller's market.  In the instance you've provided, "we" would have something "they"  want badly and they would have to pay handsomely to get it.  It could work to the advantage of the lower team .  Jake Spencer for a first or second round pick to a team with all its ruckmen injured?  I'd take it.

Why would you want to create an event that is 100/1 on to complicate, confuse and divide? 

Prima facie cannot see any massive need for such an event.  The way I see it , it might make it harder for retention and  another bunch of carrots for those in the premiership window to dangle. This time mid season?

However lets see what they trot out.

...but shouldn't it actually be about the game...

It's not so beneficial if the media are focussed on trade when the season is in full swing.

Other games need this kind of distraction as they do "Match day Experiences"...

Strange to say this these days but to me the game is and was always the focus...it's more than good enough.

The actual game suffers with this type of media frenzy, and it will be a frenzy.

Precisely what I meant.  I suspect some in AFLHQ suffer withdrawal symptoms if they don't generate media frenzies regardless of whether they are good for the game.
