Win the trade period ? How did we?

Because we landed the best player who happens to be 21 and has 10+ AA years in him.

Please lets not lose sight of the fact that at the end of the day we have significantly improved our list by adding Lever. Does anyone here really think we can't win a flag without Watts?

So we pay overs for Lever and take unders for Watts.

Well done MFC outstanding work.

And why did we have to rush the Lever deal for as Mahoney wanted to get it done asap??

Great negotiating melb yet again.

I think you'll find the FD have achieved what they set out to - In: Lever, Out: Watts

I think the trade for Lever was fair - got to pay top dollar for a Rolls Royce, but sentimentality says 31 for Watts is unders.

Also for all those crying for Jack, aren't you glad that once he announced he wanted to go to Port that Melbourne did the right thing by him and got it done?

Would a stand off until 4:59pm on Thursday made everyone happier?

At the end of the day we did right by Watts getting the deal he wanted done, and we still have 2 days to try and swap picks or complete other trades.

Which of our defenders is he going to play against and/or beat?

One match-up I won't spend too much time on.

Whoever is on Watts, the instruction will be to play through that player as often as possible

Mahoney on Trade Radio (Watts for pick 31):

Roughly quoted below (Scribed while listening). Don't shoot the messanger.

Introduction

"Yeah, very pleased to get Lever done in the time we did"

This morning, caught up with Jack, decided just this morning (yeah right) he wanted to go to Port. Wanted to JUST get the deal done

Thought second-round pick was ideal. Wanted a little earlier in the second. But Port only had 31 so thought it was an easy transaction.

Now talking about how Jack feels.

They both leave thinking its the best for Jack and right move for the footy club.

Now talking about how quickly the deals are getting done. Commending the club on it.

Don't look at individual deals, looking at the final change at the end of the trade period (Something along those lines).

Thinking it's the right move for the footy club (despite the supporters feeling).

BLAH BLAH Jack Watts scrutiny over his career.

Now on Balic

YES they think they'll get a deal done with Balic.

They believe with one of their later picks.

Mention they are going to the draft with Pick 29, 31, and 36.

Now Garland

Indicating he'll likely retire. Did not confirm.

Now Gawn

In discussions to lock him away long-term. Sounds very promising that he's not far off signing.

Final priority

To get the Balic deal done.

They will weigh up the options to bundle the three 2nd round picks to upgrade in the draft.

Watched Lever closely in the crucial game against the Weagles and also the GF

He did little to impress on these two occasions. Also his average disposals were almost the same as Watts. Time will tell.

Definitely got unders on this one. The Lever deal was more necessary although would have liked to hold firm on the 2018 first rounder but this? I liked the idea of maybe Watts + 36 for 31 and 34.

To all those upset about receiving pick 31, what were you realistically expecting for him?

It was clear that no club was going to part with a first round pick for him, so are you disappointed we didn't get a pick earlier in the second round?

He picked Port, the earliest pick they had in the entire draft was pick 31. It is what it is.

I'll reserve judgement until the end of the trade period. Maybe 31 will be used to get something better.

If we keep 31 I'll be very disappointed that the club didn't suck it up and recognise that Jack offers a [censored] load more than a speculative pick in a reportedly weak draft.

He was top 5 in last years B&F FFS. He and Hogan combined were being touted as the next big forward line duo earlier in this very season. He offers us things structurally that no other player in our squad can.

Thats worth more than 31, imo....

Lever is twice the player of Watts, and five years younger.

Theres no comparison.

Maybe - but they've picked up three players all with question marks about their attitudes, whether it's do with work ethic or their commitment to the team. Ken Hinkley is going to have to be a superb coach if PA is to get the outcome it's looking for.

This is a really good point. On the face of it they look like they've done really well but when you put it this way it gives it a lick of reality. Motlop is going home to have family around him but the other two aren't. Hinkley has backed himself to turn around players that Scott, Fagan & Roos/McCartney/Goodwin failed to turn around. He hasn't been able to turn Hartlett around and they are paying him a fortune.

He seems like a great kid and I wish him the best. The most over scrutinised player in the history of the AFL. I wish him the best but will be very surprised if we see a transformed performance from him next season.

Apart from moving up from 36 to 34 it's what we got.

I just cannot believe we are dragging this out until the last day. I expected he nominated his club monday and the deal was done by, at the latest, this morning.  Clearly we are not as willing to settle for a crap pick?? Has Watts dug his heels in? Not according to Connors? What a farcical way this whole saga has been handled.

Why do you think Melbourne dragged it out? Maybe it was Watts. Maybe Jack was hoping that Geelong would come to the party and when they didn't he ran out of options. Connors said that he would be moving on. More unfounded speculation - as if we didn't have enough in this thread already.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
