I think it's really funny how clouded some posters get when it comes to defining "very good footy" and "excellent attributes".

It's funny and weird. The expectations for someone like Oscar are so low because of how many mistakes he was making and how infrequently he was having an impact on the ground. But as soon as he stopped making as many mistake and started making a few spoils here and there (without doing anything spectacular whatsoever), posters like you come out and say ridiculous things like that. 

The same can be said for Watts and how supporters now judge him and the impact he has on games. He gets pats on the back for performing at a level that really, should be expected. But because of his past, the adoration and applause becomes greatly exaggerated.

I don't care that you don't agree with my views on Oscar. But please don't say things that aren't true. Things like him having excellent attributes.

I'm hopeful of us getting Lever and it's sounding like we're very much in the mix but I'm concerned that it doesn't fix one of the main issues we have in defence. When we come up against bigger bodied forward we seem to get bullied VERY easily. Lever doesn't strike me as a gorilla defender more an intercept marker (which can help in these situations), but we still have the issue of one on one.

I would like to see us go for a bit of a smokey trade like we did for Garlett, try to target a player with obvious talent but seems to be struggling with consistency. 

I also want us to try to hold on to our first round pick this year or at least trade into a scenario where we are in the first round. I don't think we've had a first round pick since Weids.

I have the feeling he will play on Patton or Lobb for periods (to relief Talia and Hartigan) tomorrow night but he is not a lock down defender, more of a very good 3rd man he is a beauty at marking and reading play.

I agree I would like to keep our first rounder but to get Lever you would have to give them a player worthy of that pick, a potential catch 22

I agree completely, but if I recall correctly, reason we didn't have a first round pick last year was because we traded it as a future pick the year before to allow us to pick up both Weid and Clarry.  I'll quite happily gloat with how well that has worked out so far with respects to Clarry and hopefully Weid too in the next few years.  Does really show how valuable those first round picks can be when used well.

One things surprises me Steve. With your ability to assess talent i don't understand why you are not working for an AFL club in a list management role.

With your mad skills and football acumen some of the decisions the so called professionals at the mfc have made in the last two years must baffle and frustrate you in equal measure.

As an example of that acumen let's look at two young kp players you mention above at comparative stages in their career - their second season of AFL football.  Both need to put on some muscle and of course it is a big ask to play in key positions at such a young age. 

The one you see as having no obvious talent or easily identifiable attributes is backed in by the so called professionals to play 15 games in his second season, ahead of veterans Lynden Dunn and Colin Garland. Despite having those two experienced defenders available once picked he is not dropped all season. Yes he averaged 6.5 intercepts and over 16 possessions a game at 78.3% DE (silly stat - so easy for defenders like him a to get high DE with their easy chip kicks!). But, still - honestly what were they thinking?

And then at seasons end do they heed your advice and draft in a stop gap experienced KPD to allow him to develop in the VFL while they waited for lever to come off contract? What? They don't? No, they don't and what's more such is their bizarre confidence in him they trade away an experienced KPD in Dunn. Crazy stuff.

Now lets look at the second season of the player with 'obvious talent and easily identifiable attributes that made him standout prior to being drafted. Which is part of why he went inside the top 10'.

Now this is where it gets really weird. Good injury free pre season after a similarly injury free run in his first pre season. But only gets selected for seven afl games. Seven. And this despite the fact that for big chunks of the season we had one or both of our key forwards out through injury and form and were desperate for a KPF.

And this is where it gets even weirder. Despite having such obvious talent at their disposal they instead throw TMac forward and ask his inexperienced brother, who has no obvious talent, to carry the load and be the main man down back. A young fella in just his third season - what were they thinking? Strange also that this coincided with the period jnrmac thinks we played our best football.

To be fair to the so called professionals the high draft pick with such obvious talent has hardly set the world on fire in the magoos and at times down right struggled. And when he has got a gig in the seniors he has shanked more kicks than taken marks (64.3% DE - ouch, 3 contested marks in total - double ouch), averaged 8.6 possession a game and kicked a grand total of 3 goals which is given the KPI of a KPF is kicking goals is not a great return.  

But his talent is obvious. And it is a big step up to AFL level. And it is a real challenge for young kp players to play regular senior footy at AFL level. You have to be pretty good to get regular games at that age playing in a KP. Big men take time.

And for what it is worth i agree. His talent is obvious. And i think he will make it. Though that is not as clear as it might have 12 months ago or when he was drafted so highly. 

The ability of the so called professionals at the dees to see the obvious must drive you nuts Steve. Do us all a favor and get a job there and set them straight. Though with their inability to spot talent and make good choices they probably would not give you a gig. Fools.

Actually, I have been doing some scouting  this year for a club and hope to continue it. It's quite enjoyable.

With respect to you Binman, I don't know why don't just put me on ignore. 

Club's make decisions all the time that don't necessarily work out and our very own club are no better example in years gone by. All decisions should be questioned.

I've given my reasons countless times as to why Oscar played more than Weed this year. And it was simply out of necessity due to a lack of options, regardless of what you say. And we see that all the time at clubs. Some players are given more leniency thanks to a lack of depth in a given line. (Backline in our case).

Oscar has battled away manfully this year and has been okay for the last half of the season. But is there any wonder why there's talk of us going so hard for a bloke whos the same age and experience as Oscar and we're willing to pay upwards of $700,000 a year for him?

Most obviously we are a weak key defensive unit. Oscar, Frost and Tom all have major flaws in their game. Yeh Oscar and Frost have time on their side. But as so many others have pointed out, you can't carry three key defenders who can be so hit and miss into a finals campaign. And next we'll be ready to play finals.

Building list and line depth takes time, especially from where we've come from. Next year with an injury free run, we'll have a lot more coverage given we'll hopefully have Lever, Garland for one more year, Smith and Keilty if he comes on.

That will be hugely beneficial given the need to perform at your best will be turned up and Oscar won't be given the same leniency as he was this year.

All of that is positive. Now put me on ignore.
