But they always seem to get the seemingly impossible trades done. I would not be surprised one bit if it all comes to pass.

We should be setting the same lofty goals for our own list development now. I'm really hoping this is the year where we do a Geelong and bag some stars.

I agree with your point @McQueen

What I am saying is they don't really have any assets to trade. It will make a mockery of the system if the manage to land even half of those players mentioned with only - 1 x 2018 1st rd pick and some B Grade players (Motlop, Menzel, Lang etc).

And I say it's a joke because they won't trade Danga, Selwood, Hawkins. The rest of their stars are too old and their younger blokes aren't anywhere near as good of quality as the players they are targeting.

If those players mentioned were Unrestricted Free Agents (or FAs for short - not being restricted), I would understand. But like I said, Geelong have no trade assets available. It would seriously make a mockery of the system if they were to land them with what they have to offer.

But back to your point, I agree totally, if we can land good young players and give up virtually nothing.... I am all for it. But it shouldn't happen like that

Does anyone know for sure how Geelong are impacted by the whole 'must use 2 first round draft picks in a rolling 4 year period' situation?

Nakia Cockatoo was their last first round selection in 2014 draft, and without first rounder to use in this years 2017 draft surely they are required to keep/use first rounder picks for next years 2018 draft? - perhaps even required to trade in a first round pick ontop of that to get their 2 first rounders in 4 years?

Most I've found about it is random Herald Sun article basically saying the AFL are only planning to loosely follow that rule until 2019 when it will become much stricter.

not 100% positive either about this.

I had the understanding that it might get awkward for the Pvssies  re having to use picks . That rooster might be about to crow.

I'm not hitching my wagon just suggesting that he is somewhat forgotten and can play a decent HF role.

Not similar to Vanders at all.

The AFL will make it up as they go along. What are they going to do? As if they will penalise the Cats. Won't happen.

I agree

I didn't mind what I saw from Smith when he played. It's a shame he got so badly injured in rd 5 and we didn't see him again this year.

I am not saying he is a saviour but, he's a big boy and looked like he could contribute now

I agree with the firts point. I think Smith has big upside. And the fact that the club gave him games early in the season suggest they do to. If he had stayed fit it is possible he might have stayed in the side all year, like Hannan. His aggression at the ball, tackling and accurate kicking is exactly what we lacked late in the season. I hope he has big pre season and has some luck with injury.

I do think though that he is similar in some ways to vanders. Big bodies HF's both. I actually think Smith is likely to keep VB out of the side.

It doesn't kick in until 2019 so they are in the clear.

In the paper it said Lang was on the move. Any interest? Someone posted that Geelong was the 3rd team Melbourne talking to. Is he the player? He played well last night.

Did it say why he's on the move?

To make way for Stringer, Ablett and a couple of more players. They also mentioned that Motlop is on the way out.

Lang has one thing we need - pace.  Whether or not he is talented enough to play long midfield minutes and make a consistent impact on a game is up for debate, but he might be someone worth looking at.

Think he may be coming out of contract and they can't guarantee a spot.

Very meh on Lang (in the matches I've seen with the exception of Friday, he's a very limited player), but I'll back the pros on this one.

Some reports that Hogan wants to go home and a 3 way trade is being negotiated by Fremantle, Dees and Adelaide which would see -

Fremantle get Hogan

Adelaide get pick 5

Dees get Lever

As I've said weeks ago, it wold not surprise me to see Hogan go home after the year the poor kid has had. But I don't believe this report is true, I guess we will watch this space. If that were to happen I'd want Adelaide's pick 16 in exchange also.

We need more in that trade.

Hogan is better and more valuable than Lever.

Was it sporting news? I read a similar article this morning and attached a link in the Lever thread. There's no way I would do that trade.

Unsure mate, if you saw it too then at least my mate isn't telling porkies. If it's SportingNews then just throw it in the bin, they are that mob with Kim Raghorn or whatever his name is hey?

The below article referred to a rumour but doesn't say where it came from. It's because the rumour is crap.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
