Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

No-one is entitled to be offended. Offence is always taken not given.

Well, I didn't realise he was given the nickname 'Chimp' at Collingwood. Say what you like about Lumumba being a bit pretentious and precious, but that is f'n awful.

I mean this is pretty basic stuff, not complicated. Even Collingwood people should be able to get that far.

There is  also another article:

Heritier Lumumba says he was accused of throwing Collingwood president Eddie McGuire 'under the bus'

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/afl/afl-news/heritier-lumumba-says-he-was-accused-of-throwing-collingwood-president-eddie-mcguire-under-the-bus-20170818-gxz433.html

From reading it ealier this morning, it relates to Lumumba publicly calling out Eddie over the Goodes incident.  Now with the knowledge of this previous 'chimp' nickname issue, it is fully understandable how and why Lumumba would have reacted.

There is nothing casual about racism.

That all said, anyone who throes Eddie under a bus has my support.

On another note, whilst I don't nessasrily disagree with some of Lumumba's claims and attacks on racism, there were some ways in which I recon he built a rod for his own back and brought trouble on himself:

It became something of a sport among the football fraternity to make light of Lumumba's passionate stand on his own identity, his private demons and his stand against racism in which he was often accused of becoming blinded by political correctness.

Probably this happened from the time he changed his name from Harry O'Brien back to his birth name and underlined by his farewell speech to the Magpies at the 2014 Copeland presentation, when he told the assembled that his given name Heritier meant prince. "The one who will have the last laugh and the one who is gifted." He finished fourth in the best and fairest that season.

It certainly doesn't excuse racism, but Australian culture doesn't react well to this kind of behavior of people having tickets on themselves/elitist behavior and I don't think there is anything wrong with that as it emphasises humility and equality amounst peers that Australian's do generally like to hold up as a quintessential part of our culture.  Lumumba certainly wouldn't have endeared himself to anyone with this kind of behavior.  Conversely it does also expose somewhat of a hypocracy in Australian culture, that we don't like anyone to view themselves as above others, yet many are also prepared to excuse and tolerate racisim.

Why would that be an issue?

He wasn't indigenous. He was Brazilian. Is he some advocate for 'affirmative' action hiring policies?

Not sure on his motivations, just that it was his complaint. Here is the section from the article

Quote

The documentary does not cover his time at Melbourne but he says now it rankled him that at this club, too, there was not one Indigenous staffer based at the MCG office nor any Indigenous coaches.
"I did not see one person of colour in their administration and in my career I've never once had an Indigenous coach. The AFL loves to boast about its wonderful Indigenous talent so why aren't their talents being fine-tuned for coaching?
"You tell me Leon Davis couldn't teach footballers. He taught me things about football no one else could teach. Why was that never harnessed?"
Lumumba said his return to Melbourne in the coming days will see him deal with "unfinished business". Having spoken previously of his battle with depression he has now rejected alcohol and prescription drugs as a way to alleviate stress – a well-worn path presented to him and which he has seen others take. He meditates daily, has transformed his diet, is in a relationship with an American woman he does not wish to detail and is in a far better place than during his final year of football.

I've always been of the opinion that we should hire the best candidate for the job. If our indigenous players would be more comfortable have an indigenous member on the staff, then I guess that makes an indigenous candidate the best for the job.

As for the Leon Davis comment, H seems to imply that Leon wanted to coach but no-one gave him a shot. I was of the understanding that Leon wanted to go home to Perth, and wasn't interested in staying involved in the AFL.

Will be interested to see if anything comes out of this "unfinished business"

Isn't Matty Wheelan now actually employed by the MFC?  I actually thought it occurred during H's time at the club as well.  I actually think H is going off a little half cooked here as again I think the club has treated it's indigenous stars pretty well and encouraged them to make a contribution to the club's culture when they reach a point of maturity to do so, i.e Arron Davey, Matty Wheelan, Nev Jetta and even Garlett have all been well embraced and reconized as making important leadership contributions to the club.

Glad to hear H is in a great place at the moment.

in my opinion he was a borderline delusional psycho.

Unfortunately our list is one man short due to his petulance.

I wish him luck stamping out evil whitey and smashing the patriarchy.

Fight the Power H!!

Be interesting to know how the Melbourne players took to H when he arrived.

His delusions of self granduer would be hard to take on a daily basis regardless of skin colour, that said, for him to be nick named "Chimp" whilst up the road is abhorrent and goes a long way in explaining why McGuire showed us his true colours a few years ago concerning Adam Goodes

Good lord, DL's dark web has leaked onto the main board. Predicatably given rhe topic.

Can't wait for the inevitable pc police comments. After all it is tough being a white middle aged, middle class australian and being told their views are out of step with what is acceptable in 2017.

Everybody is entitled to their views, it is having them rammed down my throat that I object to, or the whining that if you don't agree you are being PC

H was different, patently not allowed in Australia, so we need to immediately denigrate, it takes balls to tread an individual path in life.

You only have to read some of the topics as the pack senses weakness in a poster and goes for the kill, I am speaking from personal experience of course, but as I regard this forum as nothing but trivial entertainment ( this topic being an exception) it has no impact on me, anonymous keyboard warriors are what the name suggests

I have been here over 40 years and knew from the first week that Australian culture includes a healthy dose of racism, to all races who are not your classic Aussie as described above

He was respected by the other players for his on field achievements, he tended to keep to himself off field, but that occurs at every club as a player matures and develops interests away from the game, family, business etc

If by different you mean 'annoyingly self righteous pain in the arse' then yeah. I'm happy for that to be frowned upon and laughed at.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
