Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Brown has wanted out for several months. Sick of the internal criticism at North regarding his physicality and courage. Most of it from a former player renowned for his hardness who now seems to have way too much influence at the club.

Who is that??

Firstly, think about the fact that we're just about the worst side in the AFL regarding marks per inside 50.

Now think about this for a minute:

Brown is an extremely one-dimensional lead-up style key forward who needs the ball kicked to him on the [censored] in order to impact...

The answer is an obvious and firm no from me. It makes absolutes zero sense given Goodwin's refusal to shake up the midfield, draft and trade for higher skilled and more composed players or change the game-plan.

Having said all of that, no doubt we will trade a second-rounder for him and we'll go into next year with all the same issues, an identical midfield mix, same chaotic blaze-away game style and Brown will do nothing but run around like a headless chook the whole year.

I look forward to it. ?

Weideman in the same category so yes, we don’t want two of them.

Would love to get Brown!  I think we would need to shift some players around but we could certainly make it work.

Fritsch and Salem on half forward flanks both with nice delivery by foot.  Kossie / Spargo roving off both Weid/Brown i think would be a potent forward line potential.  Can't find a spot for Melksham if we want to turn this forward connection thing around.

Salem is a natural forward, he is great off the backline but i believe we have few half backs that can play his role.  ie Lockhart/Rivers.

Well he is 28 so if the body is ok you would get 3 years at least out of him.

If he passed a medical, was not expensive and could be obtained cheaply, then yes I would have a serious look at him.

Interesting that 32 yo T.Hawkins is still going strong. At the right price 3 years seems reasonable.

Maybe he is injured. It seems rash of Norf to let him go.

Or don't overthink it. If we can't accommodate the game's most consistent goal-kicker over the past few years (legit reasons for the slump this year) then we may as well shut up shop. On the market for cheap in terms of trade cookies, late starter, will release Fritsch and co. to do things you don't think Brown can do.

I'll say one thing: while we are a serious offender (albeit improved this year), just about every fan laments their club's inability to hit up targets and the bombing it long. You think North had sublime delivery skills all the years Brown was kicking bags?

Straightening a team up is a fairly common phrase for a reason. Brown will be our TMac of 2018. Presents on the lead and opens up the angles and further options. You don't ambivilate when a KPF of Brown's quality is on the market for cheap.

Unfortunately, given what's at stake for our club going forward (and Simon Goodwin as coach), overthinking it is a necessity this off-season.

If Brown is so valuable as you say, why is it that North are so happy to push him out the door? And why are we not hearing that half the sides in the AFL are after him?

And to answer your question regarding North's ability to hit up Brown allowing him to kick bags over the years, my answer is yes. They had a far better balance of attributes through their midfield and ther inside 50 retention rate was far better than ours and has been over the past 3-4 years.

I implore supporters to read this article:

 https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/more-news/footys-best-and-worst-attacking-kicks-why-melbourne-mids-should-be-embarrassed/news-story/48a26705d7c39f296539f4e663d45c07

I don't dispute that Brown is a super forward when the game is on his terms. My argument is that we'd have to drastically change our entire style/game-plan, personnel through the middle, forward-line setup and gameplan to give Brown the opportunity to play to his strengths. Goodwin has recruited and drafted a team to play a certain way. We have a gameplan closer to Richmonds than West Coast.

We have a number of areas we need to address. A key forward is definitely one, but Brown is not the key forward for us imo.

I hope we get involved in some trades because we are nowhere near contending with this list and with no high picks at this year's draft we need to be inventive.

Pretty sure we'll be busy.

We have a good team on paper with some obvious flaws / holes (running winger/hbf with good delivery skills, key forward).

We have surplus talent with trade currency in areas that other teams need eg inside mids (viney, brayshaw, harmes), ruck (preuss) and a forward (tmac).

While I don't want to see any of these players traded, you have to give quality to get quality and we are currently a few players short.  E.g Preuss would be great as insurance but if gawn is injured, we have other options (none of them perfect) but since we are predictable with gawn at the centre bounces, maybe having a ruck s less important than we think.  Or to put it another way, if we can find a kpf or skilled outside runner that is in our best 22, then this is better than keeping preuss who is at best our 23rd player.

Worth considering with this that Brown does not have much exposed form at the MCG (10 games 21 goals) vs Docklands (66 games 173 goals). My view is his game is much more suited to Docklands.

My view is - lets see what he can do with more space to lead into. Maybe his record at MCG is because they don't play there much or were constantly playing on Friday nights?

Pity, as we play at Cazaly in Cairns, Alice Springs, the Gabba, Metricon, Adelaide Oval, SCG, GWS, Perth, Launceston, Hobart and New Guinea, everywhere except the MCG and Docklands.

Lets go after Ben hard.  A three  year deal to someone that knows the forward line and is an accurate kick.  His height of 200cm will stretch  any back line  and can take a mark.

Put him beside a Luke Jackson almost 200 cm himself  and any team would have nightmares  which would be thinking about the Twin towers during the week. Brown will be 28 so  l think a 3 year deal would be fair.

Gawn  resting in the pocket next to Brown  our crumbers  will be salivating.   Brown would make a difference IMO.

We only would go after Brown if we think TMac as a forward is a bust.  If he is a bust, no one else will take him.  We will then be stuck with all or a decent part of TMAcs contract plus brown’s.

Anyone hearing anything about TMAc, beyond the Basic rumours (didn’t crack the team so will want out)?

MELBOURNE

The most intriguing part of their trade moves could centre around Ben Brown and Tom McDonald. Melbourne are desperate for a consistent, true key forward to support Sam Weideman and Bailey Fritsch and they look set to part ways with McDonald if they get the right deal for him. His defensive capabilities could appeal to the Roos. Also of note is Jared Polec, with the Dees crying out for another genuine winger to support Ed Langdon. Expect both clubs to have some crossover this trade period. Jack Viney‘s future continues to hang in the balance, with both Carlton and Geelong seeing him as a genuine chance to jump ship. Simon Goodwin is a huge fan of Viney and with the 26-year-old a restricted free agent the club may play hard ball (in true Viney fashion) to force a trade. The Dees are one of at least four clubs watching Adam Saad‘s situation with interest. Angus Brayshaw is contracted until the end of 2022, but if Viney stays then expect clubs to ask the question. It would be a surprise if Braydon Preuss is at the club next year given his standing in the pecking order and the fact both Sydney and GWS are in need of a ruckman.\

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
