much rather 5 & 23.. draft drops away after 7.. we don't need any more inside mids or players from wa and that's what the rest seem to be. i'd much rather get a gem at 5 and let jason taylor work his magic at 23.. plus, it means that we will stop the crows from getting who they want.. win-win ?

It’s not a fair reading. That midfield was awful all year. The defender can’t do much when the ball comes in with no pressure all the time. 

I’m more concerned about his discipline issues. He would wanna pull his head in

With May on board it shores up our defense for the next decade especially our tall stocks. Petty will develop well next year and gradually start to play some games. Joel Smith is another the club will get games into next year as the real athletic defender that can play on smalls.

I think you'll find that if we're able to get May, we'll turn our attention back to adding more depth into our midfield. Tyson is gone and Jones may only have 1 year left, so adding more depth is crucial.

A few things...

I doubt you know that every one of those goals was kicked on May.  In fact, I know you don't, because Kennedy kicked 4 on him and Riewoldt 6.  And key defenders are only as good as team structures and the quality of their midfield.

You think May is slow when speed is one of his biggest strengths.  This clearly tells me you have no clue about the player you're criticising.

The following is from a recent article:

In 2016 he (May) was the third-best defender in the competition behind Alex Rance and ahead of Jeremy McGovern, losing just 14 of 71 one-on-ones for the entire year.

This season Gold Coast haemorrhaged inside 50s, giving up five more than the next-worst side.

The offensive stuff is what elevates him above the dime-a-dozen stoppers.

This year he averaged 17.4 disposals (second-most for key defenders), 334 metres gained (second most for key defenders) as well 7.6 intercept possessions, three intercept marks and 6.8 spoils (all above average).

Put him into an good side with quality players around him and you have a weapon at full back.

They (Melbourne) get Jake Lever back at some stage and improved their defensive mix late, but still were the fourth-easiest side to score against across the entire season.

Slot him in alongside Lever and Max Gawn becomes an offensive threat again instead of being forced to play as a seventh defender at times as well as a ruckman.

To sum up, Olisik, you're welcome to your opinion, but it's hopelessly misinformed.

I guess you are too busy making [censored] up to understand May is extremely quick off the mark. In the GF sprint a couple of years back he left Jayden Hunt for dead over the first 50m or so.

He has pace, very good pace for a guy of his size.

I think a lot of people are missing the point that May is a strong bugger who can really engage one on one with the big power forwards, when he has them tied up and wrestling, it allows Lever and Hibberd to cut across and intercept.  OMac does get pushed out out position by the big forwards at times.

The notion of FB and CHB has changed.

May gets the no.1 key forward, Oscar (or Frost) gets the next tall/resting ruck, and Lever is the intercept.

I agree, I suppose that’s what’s I’m curious about because I think Oscar is probably a slightly better defensive option but if you wanted a bit more drive out of that position I’d lean towards frost

I disagree with this. 

I think may is going to be used in the second tall while Oscar continues to get the number 1. The idea will be for May to be an intercept marker, because he had that skill, along with Lever while Oscar does the donkey work of keeping the best forward on the ground.

May is a contest winner and a potentially excellent rebounder and would be wasted playing as a key stopper.

But May is naturally offensive while at the same time a very good negator.  He's also 27 and 102KG.  He won't get shifted like Oscar is occasionally.

It will be interesting how they're used.

May was marking absolutely everything (14 marks) that day. The ball just wouldn't get past him. An elite defender's game.

I see the idea but there is a shift away from using your best contest winning defender on the big forward. That's what Rance has done except for specific matchups like Buddy. Rance will play a position and win the one on ones against lesser players in dangerous positions while Astbury will follow the big forward around.

I really like May as a player. I remember being at the game where they beat Hawthorn at the MCG a few years back and he was dominant playing as an intercepting deep defender.

But, as you say, we'll wait and see what transpires.
