Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

One bollock can produce more than enough testosterone.

All the best to Jesse and his family.

This is true but it doesn't always work like that. And the cancer can cause irregularities post-treatment even without removal. Indeed, it can be a predictor of cancer - so there's questions over cause and effect (as the general population don't tend to know their normal testosterone levels before being diagnosed). The reason I brought it up is my closest mate both has/had cancer (of the liver) and works in a senior position for one of the state Cancer Councils. He's said in the past that while awareness and successful treatment has improved for testicular cancer, there remains a post-treatment stigma as to fertility and hormonal issues. As part of this, I believe they were lobbying (or intended to) major sporting bodies for more flexibility. But wasn't sure on the AFL's stance.

He's had a bastard of a trot, and is probably wondering who's dog he kicked. Very treatable, and in respect to recovery, wound healing is the only barrier to returning to footy, which I'd reckon he'd be hankering for as soon as humanly possible. The distraction and focus of playing is really what all ill or injured pro sportspeople really want. They'll probably have to hold him back if anything. At the risk of getting too intimate, he'll undoubtedly get a prosthetic companion to reconstruct the original pairing, and nobody'll be the wiser. We can only hope Jesse gets a clear run at it soon enough, and look out football world when he does.

May I respectfully propose that one minute of applause at the one minute mark of the first quarter on Sunday against North could be a sign of support for Jesse.

(If I recall correctly a similar show of support was arranged for Roughy at the second minute of the second quarter after his diagnosis).

Just a thought.

Wishing Jesse all the best for a speedy recovery.

To all the lads out there, this really drums home the message that, if you feel or notice something unusual, go to your GP. Best to have it dealt with early.

The 25-40 age bracket is the most common age for testicular cancer, so swallow your pride, and get it checked out.

My mate had the same thing. Diagnosed at 25. Its ok to go to the Doctor because you're feeling 'off'. It literally saved my mates life.

Couldn't believe the news on the airwaves this morning. Wishing Jesse a speedy recovery and a long healthy life. Got it early apparantly which is promising.  Certainly puts anything footy into perspective given his last few weeks.

Thoughts are with Jesses Mum, not just Jesse.

Not much of a Mothers day period for her.

Reading that they expect Jesse to be fine. I hope Mum is the same.

A bit more on the behind the scenes: http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/melbourne-forward-jesse-hogan-diagnosed-with-testicular-cancer/news-story/355c4b600b5293f0a8140ada716fbbb4

Mahoney's comments on Jesse:

“... what we’re seeing is a young 22-year-old mature before our eyes,” ... “The way he’s handled the death of his father, returned to the club and the way he handled himself that week was a tremendous effort. ... “All we can do as a club at the moment is offer support and help him and his family through this. ...“We’re confident from what we’ve seen already he’s going to bounce back out of this. He’s a very resilient character.”

Mahoney's comments on team mates:

“You can imagine how emotional they were about the situation that Jesse’s going through,”  ... “For them to perform the way they did on the weekend was all they could do. They said all they could do for Jesse was play the best they can. They’ve been tremendous with him ever since. ... “It’s inspiring what Jesse has been through this year to still perform and still be around the club. It’s one of those ones that when he does get back, everyone will rally around him and look forward to him getting back to playing.”

Moving comments.

Good thought, put it in writing to the club, as the few hundred Demonlanders that agree will be drowned out by the typical footy noise, so if the club can arrange for it to be put up on the big screens before the game then that would help a lot.

And our captain adds a bit more on how the players felt:

"Jones said the news about Hogan was used as a motivating factor ahead of the club's 41-point win over Adelaide last Saturday night. ... "It was definitely mentioned, particularly when one of our mates is facing some of the things 'Hoges' has faced,"  ... "It was an opportunity for us to draw on some of that inspiration, particularly with how he's handled himself and the adversity he's faced. ... "It pales into insignificance the fact that we're playing a game of footy and we've got one of our mates going through the stuff he's been through. ... "Our best way of honouring that was performing on the weekend and making sure we keep a really positive vibe around the footy club and keep supporting him as well as he can."

Its hard not to be emotional reading about Jesse's illness, adversity resilience.

So glad the guys were able to did deep for Jesse vs the Crows - Lots to be proud of about our club and our team.

Aren't Jesse (and us) have people like Josh Mahoney looking after things. Whoever brought him to the club should be congratulated because he seems to be the right person to deal with life's "hiccups".

Good luck with Jesse in his treatment and well being.

I've tweeted the club the same. If there is anyone more social media savvy happy for them to push the barrow too.

I know it's a bit copycat of the Roughy thing but it's respectful and everyone can participate.

What a trot. I really feel for Jesse and his family - this must have been very tough news to take. Glad to hear the news is positive under the circumstances.

Sounds - again - like the club has been immense in its support. This is one of those times where football clubs can really shine - few people would have the vast support network available to them than what a strong club can offer.

We're all still right behind you Jesse and look forward to seeing you in the jumper again.

I think it is a great idea, whether it is copycat or not.

Devastating news, here's to a full recovery for the sake of his health, football is irrelevant.

I think for supporters it's irrelevant, but I suspect it's very relevant for Jesse.

Mahoney was accompanied by the club doctor.  Comments as best I could type:

  • Jesse saw club doctor last week as had a lump
  • Extremely early detection, is at a very early stage and has not spread.
  • Jesse wanted to play last weekend.  (God bless him)
  • He is in good spirits and positive about the outlook.
  • Doctor said he won't need chemo (I think that is what he said).
  • Recovery 4 to 8 weeks.

Best wishes Jesse and family.

Thanks LH. Much appreciated.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
