Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Sorry, but how the actual f*#k does Cotchin get to punch a bloke in the face and get a fine?

Oh, he wasn't looking at him so it wasn't intentional. Right.

What a joke.

Freo are now untouchable returning the favour, but if you want to slow someone right up, you now have the green light.

Pretty stupid and weak decision by the MRP letting Cotchin off like this. If it was Bernie, cant help thinking it would have been a different result,

Haven't seen the Guthrie incident, but MRP inconsistency is hardly surprising. The umpires can and will move backwards in that way all day, every day.

I didn't notice that in the live vision (my memory is that the collision is quite a while after he and Sloane are side by side), but maybe you're right - if so, stiff. Anyone have a link to the replay?

MRP are just plain corrupt, or if being charitable just plain incompetent... no doubt.

Franklin late hit was ok because it was an open hand but Hogan's was 2 weeks for a first "offence".  And Cotchin is clear because .....???

Just saw the Guthrie incident. Umpire Schmidt should be fined or suspended for being in the wrong position. If Guthrie didn't push him, Schmidt would have impeded an easy mark. Common sense prevailed, which is a rarity for the MRP.

And Vince wasn't pushed into the umpire by Sloane. Vince actually gave Sloane a smack in the chops when the ball was bounced, and lost his way. The fine was appropriate.

Agree. When I saw the incident live I thought Bernie was in trouble. Cop the fine and move on.

I take it Rioli didn't get cited for his nasty knee in the back to the Brisbane fella? Just saw the footage again - it's pretty ordinary, I reckon a week for that. And all we hear about is his injury. Protected species...

The whole, theatrical umpire signal that he/she will be backing out directly behind himself at a bounce/ball up is a modern invention. To think that umpires were bouncing the ball for over a century without any punishment for those that were actually playing the game!

I reckon it was a pure accident

hardly noticed at the time on the ground by any of us or Crows  supporters

BUT

it was amazing how the umpier assisted goals dried up for the Crows after that incident

I'm not fussed by it, he was in the area the umpires back into. It wasn't intended but it happened in his duties of keeping a blanket on Sloan.

Worth it.

I'm more a little grumpy the Cotchin is allowed to punch someone much the same way Jesse did and yet he gets a fine and Jesse gets two weeks. We got totally screwed with his.

I don't get how you can get away with punching someone to the face or head just because you have a hold of their jumper.

What's stopping a player then from holding the bottom of their opponents jumper and punching him in the nuts?

My understanding of a jumper punch is that it's when you grab your opponents jumper and push them with a punching motion.

I feel Jesse deserved a week for his as did Cotchin, not the completely opposite rulings that have happened.

I reckon the umpire in question deserved a free kick and fifty metres. He got the fifty metres, being escorted fifty off the ground, and will be right next week, but i didn't see the free kick??

On a more serious note, i am getting sick and tired of the number of drinkers, runners, (bludgers), crowd, Kevin Sheedy and all and sundry, etc, on the ground. Whose fault is it if the umpires runs into them?

If the AFL really believe that a player intentionally makes contact with an umpire, the player should be banned for life. No player would ever intentionally make contact with an umpire ( with the possible exceptions of John Bourke of Collingwood and Phil Carman of Collingwood)  The accidental contact between the umpire on Saturday and Bernie was a shame but not deserving of a sanction. How often are umpires obstructing and baulking players in their legitimate attempts to play the game. The umpires are responsible for 90% of collisions between players and umpires.

Once upon a time Umpires were expected to be aware of what was going on around them.  I would think that this should be a minimum requirement to umpire a game, given that their entire job is to know what's happening in their immediate area and judge whether it's within the rules.

That was in the days when there weren't 36 players at a time inside the 50 arc. Hard for the umps to have eyes in the back of their heads; equally unfair to fine accidental contact and let off a deliberate shove.

Let both incidents go or fine both. The way it's unfolded is a fair dinkum joke.

It's okay. Just wait for the biennial crackdown on runners, etc, on the ground. The AFL are strict and harsh!

Then wait another two weeks for it to go right back to what it was before.

When I think about this, the thing I always remember is the ump realising he was in the path of a Plugger lead and dropping flat.  He didn't have to look around, he just saw the ball coming from the front and knew what was behind him.  THAT was great situational awareness.

The AFL claim that their umpires today are the best trained they have ever been.  They aren't even close.

I have read these posts without having seen the replay till now and was prepared to believe it was Bernie's fault.  But I just saw it and how you can ignore the fact that Sloane spun Bernie around into the umpire is beyond me.  Beyond the MRP too it seems. Wasn't particularly forceful but I can't see how he could have avoided contact.  The commentators also thought that.  Once again the MRP's penalties are more related to the effect than the actual act.  Anyway, pay $1000 and chuckle.

I liked the way Bernie, when he realised the Ump was making a big deal of it, suddenly realised it might mitigate the penalty if he  was hurt too. The result? A slightly delayed reaction simulating a mild head injury. Didn't work, unfortunately.

I reckon the Ump did nothing to dispel the  feeling that the umps are a bit spineless by the sooky way he reacted. He could have continued on.....but I'm glad he didn't.

The MRP are buffoons.  Sorry guys but someone had to say it.  I thought Guthrie would be properly crucified and Vince would get weeks to reinforce the lesson.  But it turned out OK.  Who will be first to jumper-punch the umpy .. hhmm?

I don't know about a jumper punch, but I'd love to see a knee to the back of the head as someone takes a ride for the big mark.

I won't have it.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
