In: Pedersen, Bugg, Lewis

Out: Smith, Spencer, JKH.

Pedersen to play sacrificial lamb in the ruck.  Would also consider putting Oscar back in and playing Frost in the ruck, but I think that weakens us down back a bit.

Bugg to come in as best VFL player.  JKH not up to it.

We gave also beaten team who beat us last year - StK and Carltank

Sheeeit huge improvement there. St Kilda and Carltank are travellin not that much worse than us! Improvement indeed. In fact I reckon in some areas we have gone backwards!

I have lost faith in the selection 'committee'. saw Smith and JKH first hand at Williamstown last week. Smith gathered some cheap disposals but was an ineffectual forward.

JKH started Ok but faded and his decision making and disposal was atrocious. How they were even considered for selection is absolutely beyond me.

Pederson has every right to be peeved and will now come in as a matter of necessity. Bugg deserves another chance and Trengove has been consistent. (although not suited to Etihad). Mitch White has been very good but not sure where he plays.

We will certainly be without Spencer * Smith. Likely Petracca and Viney. The well is running dry.

I'd ruck TMac - he has the bulk for it and can run all day, he's done it before.

OMac into the backline with Frost and Hibberd.

Pedersen for Smith and he and Watts can both spell TMac.

Lewis for Melksham.

Mitch White plays in Melkshams spot! Will have a crack!

Pedersen might feel unlucky but "right to be peeved" is a bit rich.  He's been playing AFL footy for 7 years as an honest toiler.  If I were him I'd probably be grateful that I still had a job most people would dream about for the rest of the year.

That's a huge piece taken out of our defence though.  I think I'd prefer to ruck nobody.

fair point but Goodwin, and Roos before him, have publicly stated that form will be rewarded. Pederson has been very good. The likes of JKH have been gifted games.

Good call. Not quick but tough and not the worst by foot. Recall he had a good game at Etihad against GWS at the end of 2015. Might have been his first.

Agree but desperate times ...  OMac is a reasonable replacement in the backline and Hibberd is a steadier.  Frost for example had absolutely no idea in the ruck.

Well of course he was the obvious in. It showed that he was coming in off good form.

But JKH and Smith? Nah we failed there.

Bloody Goodwin should have selected Pedersen - it was obvious Jake was going to do his shoulder in the first quarter.

JKH I get, and I'm disappointed for him, but it was slightly harsh on Smith.  Would have loved to see him play out the game, but he didn't make it to half time.

Did he crack that crystal ball all coaches are supposed to have?  How he couldn't see a potential collapsed lung coming for Smith is what really gets me angry.

ANB AND OR HARMES for Kent and White as well!

Ring the changes Viney will and should be lucky to hold his spot!

Not going to quote despite the funny hypothetical prognosticating hyperbole, but Pederson really should have played tonight.

He's a very handy utility who can play back and forward, and also can clunk a mark on the wing (we don't do that enough). Adding that, he can play ruck and allow KP players more time in their actual role (like Watts).

He can add a lot to the team, even if his stats aren't great.

Not convinced Petracca or Viney are ok either.

Pedo to ruck 50/50 with Watts. Bugg comes in to add some more inside grunt who we'll need with no ruckman.

4 quarters?

Mitch King might be about to find out what league footy is all about sooner than he might have thought ... he might do better than people think too.  Once thrown the lead role, the understudy ruckman often excels.

Unlike Pedersen & Watts, King's stock-in-trade is rucking and he's probably been doing it for a lot of his footy life.  King got 26 tap-outs on the weekend and even though he's probably not really ready, the alternative is that we'll get absolutely mauled again with a combo of Pedersen & Watts.  Neither Cam nor Jack know how to ruck properly and both are at best, back-ups.

Pedersen could then come in to replace Smith and Cam can also handle the back-up ruck duties.  This will free up Watts to play in the role that is best suited to the team (high half-forward, sometimes deep and with a few spurts in the midfield)

Just a suggestion

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
