I get the indignation but lets get real.

Next week is the run home to the MKR Grand Final.  That show has had the Sunday to Wednesday time slot on Ch 7 for months.  Ch 7 are not going to give up up to a mill MKR viewers on ANZAC Eve.  Viewers for which their sponsors signed up for eons ago.

In reality AFL is the interloper here.  We need to get used to it.  For as long as Ch 7 have MKR, ANZAC Eve will be in their Grand Final week.  In a way, its a real shame because it makes our game less of a 'marquis' game from a TV point of view.  On the bright side MKR won't last forever.

Personally, I'm just happy to watch the game at the G or 7mate.

Go to the game, or use the remote control to change the channel.

Problem solved!

Well put

Footy ISNT the go to it was a generation ago.

Nor only that but the avenues available are there if desired. Albeitly for $

A commercial decision based upon experience. 7 mate will still draw a respectable veiwing and the ad space sold accordingly.

MKR will eclipse the footy in numbers and sell its space for more.

We're on Telly. Better than not.

Agree bb the whole debate on this surprises me. The game is on Free to air are people trying to say that people who want to watch football won't turn to 73?

I see that the Sydney v GWS game tonight is on 7 in Canberra where they play all other matches on non-HD 7 Mate.

I have a late model good TV and I struggle to see the difference.

Perhaps it is my eyes?

Do you see a significant difference?

It's the eyes OD -  I'm your age judging from remarks you make.

Actually, I think HD stuff looks significantly sharper but I doubt it would make much difference to an AFL broadcast(*).  I'm prepared (reluctantly, since I have no other reasonable choice) to watch AFL LIve where sometimes the players are just a coloured blur and you can only tell which way the ball went by seeing where the camera has swung to.  So don't look to me on this.

(*) Though given the director's focus on showing us player close-ups rather than what's around the player downfield or behind them, I suppose most viewers must be interested in how closely shaved the players are.

Was trying to explain to my neighbour the other day that AFL is probably one of the worst sports for TV camera coverage in the sense of strategic game coverage. Must be hell for the director.

That being said I live for the day when I have control of the camera shots... overhead, close up , player tracking you name it but I want to make the choice

It's not about those who will watch anyway, it's about the club again having to push [censored] uphill when trying to sell the brand to prospective sponsors/members/supporters. What don't people get about this?

I get what you are on about Dr.

my problem is I don't believe there will be any less viewers for the game on 73.

Viewers can select channel 7 if they want to watch dipsticks cook and eat, or they can select 7 mate to watch footy. So no, I don't get it.

i decide what to watch on fta purely by the epg

all channels are the same to me. ch.7,  ch.7mate makes no difference

if there are 2 concurrent shows i want, i just watch one and pvr the other (if i can be bothered)

Ok, so I'll be at the game but here's some data for review on Tuesday morning.

2015 ANZAC eve match - Friday - , Richmond 2 wins (let's face it, that's important) Channel 7 Melbourne viewers 380,000

2016 ANZAC eve match - Saturday - Richmond 1 win Channel 7 Melbourne viewers 297,000 viewers.

With Richmond undefeated an being a standalone match, this should be close to 400,000 on free to air tv. Being on 7mate, I'd be impressed to get to 250,000.

look even if they put the game on 7 and mkr on 7mate the footy numbers will be down

why? because no matter where shown there will be a big effect by mkr finals

the only thing that would give big numbers for footy is if they scheduled mkr to a different day

Which is what they did last year and programmed Highway Patrol outside of Adelaide and Melbourne.

Because most people won't pay as close attention as you or I. If they flick to ch7 to watch the footy and it's not on, they'll just assume it's a Foxtel game.

Will accept that arguement. There are those amongst the populace that couldn't find their arse in the dark.

If you look at ratings results over a long period of time you will see that your assumptions are correct. !!

If the sheep refused to watch the reality TV that is dished up to them, there wouldn't be a problem.

Big difference between SD & HD; so on that basis, we are unlucky.

This could have easily been a fox only game (due to spread of days), so on that basis, we are lucky.

Just a heads up those without Foxtel.

My TV guide is showing both 7mate and 7HD as airing the footy...I know which one I`ll be watching!!

Ok, so putting this to bed, here's the ratings from last night on 7mate and last minute on 70. As I suspected a bit below what par would have been if on 7 and 70 in Melbourne.

 480k (Syd 20k Mel 280k Bri 33k Ade 83k Per 64k)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
