I doubt anyone is trying to argue that Pedersen hasn't had his moments - anyone who makes it to 61 games has to have.  If Luke Williams had played in the YouTube era, I could probably come up with 10 occasions he was instrumental in setting up the play too.

Nasher he was horrific.. i still wake up at night in sweats from him spraying the ball 40m away from his teammate who was 20m in front of him.

That was kind of my point, dazz.  By any measure he was an ordinary player, but he played 51 games, so he must have added something.  Even if only 1 in 10 kicks hit a team mate, if that passage leads to a goal, over 51 games it's more than enough to produce a pretty good highlight reel.

Obviously I am not trying to compare Pedersen to Luke Williams, just making a point about using YouTube highlights when arguing on a player's merits.  It only tells a very selective piece of the story.

Agree with Pro Dee on many topics, but not on Pedersen.  

We need him in the side, not because he will kick multiple goals necessarily but because he affords us the possibility of a) taking the ruck chop-out allowing Watts to stay forward and/or b;) being the KPF target allowing Hogan to roam in the midfield (either to get him in to the game if he's struggling or to support our somewhat spluttering midfield).  Weideman offers neither of these options in the current configuration of the team and the overlay of his form makes it clear he must go back to Casey and regain confidence.

Trengove wasn't damaging with the ball but he wasn't wasteful either. I thought he was good today.

Hibberd got better as the game went on but I wouldn't have him best by a country mile. I think he goes around again next week at Casey. Having said that they rushed Frost back in after 1 Casey game.

There was something troubling about Brayshaw today but I just can't put my finger on it.  He looks a bit disinterested, he made a high number of mistakes in close particularly missing handballs and he just isn't the ferocious tackling beast he was in his debut year.

It was fairly disappointing effort but Williamstown put elite amount of pressure on for VFL level or even AFL, it was a good test and unfortunately a lot of players weren't up to the it in terms of composure with a similar problem for the AFL side.  Exceptions being Trengrove and Hibberd being the only ones to make good decisions in close and show some composure, from what I saw too many fumbles and slow decision making from the AFL boys to use there superior skill in the outside.  

For me Hibberd is a must in for next week, Trengrove & Pederson is the next 2 but not sure who to replace.

You must be racking your brain why he's not getting a game.  Perhaps you're wrong.

But many feel Weideman is also not AFL quality at this stage. There is a lot to be said for someone like Pedo increasing the chance of us winning games even if he is not a great player.   Without racking my brains I therefore assume the coaches are more interested in developing Weideman at AFL level rather than maximising the chance of winning games.  Whether that is a good idea or not, time will tell.  Perhaps I'm wrong.  You'll enjoy gloating when Weideman kicks 4 goals next week.

Thoughts

As much as I'm not a Harmes fan (I think he's one of our biggest liabilities, especially with his ball usage), his last two weeks have been decent. In fact, on the weekend, I think he's one of the only players who give it his all. I don't think he's a longterm solution, and in an ideal world, I would much prefer him not being in the side, but as it is, between Hannan and Harmes, Harmes offers somewhat more.

Players like Magner and Nicholson (and a few others) used to rack up those kinds of numbers week after week in the VFL, but were mediocre at best at AFL level.

In their first outing in their new colours and under their new name, the Casey Demons failed to bring home the points against Williamstown at Burbank Oval on Easter Monday despite a bright start.

The new look Casey combination was a far cry from the team that topped the VFL ladder in 2016 and came within a game of winning the premiership and the 23-point loss was probably flattering given their mistake-riddled efforts on the day.

The performance came just a few weeks after the Demons demolished the Seagulls in a practice match with a withering seven goal to one final quarter at Casey Fields. The difference was that back then they had Jake Spencer dominating the ruck, and Dom Tyson and Dean Kent doing as they pleased around the ground supported by a dozen other AFL listed players. 

This time around, it was a different story with Melbourne's injury toll and a couple of suspensions conspiring to limit the team to 12 AFL Demons including a few rookies and players with limited experience at the top level. They started strongly but like the Demons on Saturday were unable to assert their early dominance on the scoreboard. 

With Williamstown's experienced ruckman  Nick Meese dominating with 63 hit-outs for the day against Casey's undersized rucks in Cam Pedersen and Declan Keilty, the Seagulls took over in the engine room and dominated centre clearances allowing them to grab the lead early in the second term and hold the ascendency with a well earned eight point lead at the main break. 

The Demons were not let down by Angus Scott whose terrier-like play contributed three valuable first half goals (he finished with four for the day.

After half time, the Demons decided to channel their AFL counterparts with an insipid third quarter effort which failed to yield a single goal. Much of this was self-inflicted but in saying that, one shouldn't take anything away from the relentless pressure  and tackling of the Seagulls who coasted to a match-winning 31 point lead at the final break. Casey had little focus and failed to judge the conditions at the ground. While they reduced the margin at the end, they were never really in the hunt from 10 minutes into the second term. 

Apart from Scott, the team's major contributors were the experienced Jack Trengove (33 touches) and Michael Hibberd (25), the latter a strong possibility for immediate promotion to the Melbourne side and the former, not without his own chances. Others to feature were Angus Brayshaw, Ben Kennedy and Pedersen. A shining light for the future would have to be Category B rookie and ex-NBL basketballer Corey Maynard who picked up 25 disposals on debut for the club.

Of the VFL contingent, Scott was the stand out and Ed Morris was dependable as usual but the remainder were overwhelmed by the occasion. One who did display something was ex-Sandringham Dragon youngster Goy Lok who showed some pace and skill but missed two easy chances to goal from close in during the game. He should be able to improve on that to become a handy footballer.

The Demons should be able to do likewise at home on Saturday night when they take on the hapless North Ballarat Roosters who looked out of their depth when demolished by Richmond to the tune of 30 goals last week.

Just on that and to anyone else who is curious, here a few more statistics from the game:

Inside 50's: 50 v 50

Rebound 50's: 38 v 41

Scoring Shots: 20 v 23

Disposals: 396 v 324

Handballs: 177 v 122

Kicks: 219 v 202

So apart from the Tackles, HOs, free kicks  and handballs, it was over all a pretty even game. Our handball numbers will always be higher because that's the game style Melb/Casey play, and the higher tackle numbers can be put down to our high possession total, however you cannot fault the pressure from Williamstown.

My point being, Willy scored 7! Of their 12 goals directly from unforced turnovers, IE the kicks missing the target/poor skill execution.  Now the poor skill execution can be put down to the oppositions incredible pressure, but it's definitely something Casey can easily improve, with just a bit more composure with the footy. We also seemed to cop a fair bit of unfairness from the umpiring which even the radio commentators I was listening too started to pick up on by the end.

We only just lost to a side that has been a powerhouse in the VFL for years now, when we didn't have any true ruckman vs probably the best ruck in the VFL, and when we had only 12 Melbourne listed players due to injuries. 

Even though it was a loss, by actually doing a decent analysis, we can see that there is much upside to this game, and it looks like Casey will have another very strong year.

KC, I don't understand why Pedo is not featuring in your 'Best'.  32 disposals, alone, would almost always earn a guernsey.  What did he do wrong?
