Vince - vintage professional performance

It was a classic Bernie performance but not at all professional. Ill disciplined throughout. Baffling decision making early. Routinely trying to stir up drama.

I'll take a game like he had on the weekend but I'd prefer if he stepped up a bit and could play with good energy and also some composure.

Nonsense. Have a look at the replay...

yes 18 matches and 16 have been poor. Constant mistakes causing goals either from turnovers, missed marks, fumbles ... all simple errors. He shows signs but has been fully backed by the coaching hierarchy. He gets the nod by Goodwin unless he cops an injury.

What a lot of nonsense. Omac was not the best defender, but he did a serviceable job. He is also still learning as his brother did. We will have a star in the future, but he does enough to close down key position forwards now and that is to our great advantage.

our coaches know what they are doing....

Did you watch the same game?? Bernie was fantastic, as he almost always is. Good thing you have no influence in the MFC decision making, and simply winge for no reason from the sidelines. we are on the right path!

Dependent on scans early this week and whether he goes under the knife or not.

There was nothing fantastic about:
- Possibly getting himself suspended
- Been beaten to the ball/not taking the body on the goal line against a kid in Gresham
- Crazy first quarter decisions with and without the ball

He lifted after quarter time and played a very good game, I'm not arguing against that, I'm just saying he is far from the consummate professional. He plays footy like it's a bit of fun in the backyard and a lot of the time it works but I wish that one of our leaders and the leader of the backline could raise his standards when it comes to mental application.

Joeboy - Strangely negative analysis

OMac - Makes terrible decisions

Melksham - Better than anticipated

They said it's a dislocated shoulder, although you have to wonder looking at the footage.  Can't have been too serious given he used a pushup motion to get back up and then swung his shoulder around a bit, presumably to loosen it up.  Maybe it was that move that popped it the rest of the way out?

Anyway, if that's the case they'll probably rest him for a month or so and strap him up for the rest of the season.  Depends on how accurate the reports are.

You must've set the bar low for Melksham then. He's wasn't Oscar level diabolical but he had some bad moments. That holding the ball in the last was revolting and some of his decisions and kicks were pretty awful. He looked a lot like the player Essendon fans warned us about and not like a player who had fixed their flaws over preseason.

So Bernie was shet, O-Mac was shet, and Melksham was shet.

And here's me thinking that kicking 16 goals to 7 (only 5 until "junk-time") after quarter time (while one man down in rotations) was a fantastic all-over team effort, to which these 3 made solid contributions.

Thanks for helping me see the error of my ways.

I don't think we had a passenger. Whilst here was some "moments" from the Omac and Melksham - I thought they both contributed after quarter time.

Also it is no coincidence that our backmen looked suspect in the first quarter when we were getting beaten around the contest/midfield, The minute our midfield started to dominate our backs looked better because they got help from mids working harder defensively and also putting pressure on the ball carrier putting it into our back line.

As for Bernie - the unnecessary clip behind the ear but he was close to BOG.

A complete team effort.

O Mac was undoubtedly bad, there's no defending his bad stuff, of course I'm willing to credit the good work he does with a high motor and ability to find the ball. Melksham was up and down, I'm just surprised he exceeded anyone's expectations. Vince was down then way way up once he got going but I want him to cut out the crap because he's a quality experienced player and a leader.

It is possible for guys to play badly in a good team game and it's possible to ask for senior players to do more!

St Kilda missed a boat load of easy shots on goal as well. Let's not pretend we completely walked all over them. They kick a couple of shots in the 2nd or 3rd during our run of goals and it makes the final quarter far more of a contest.

I'm not going to pretend - I'm going accept we did walk all over them after the first quarter.

We were playing at Etihad which has not been kind to us. We were playing a team that has had the wood on us. We were playing a team that before round one were rated higher than us. After quarter time we won ever stat that mattered and controlled the contest. We slammed the contest shut with our 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Yup - we played well and pretty much walked over them.

(way too much woulda coulda shoulda in your post - they didn't kick a couple of shots so they weren't close and the last quarter wasn't a contest - they never looked like it)

At some point the ball will start sticking for Weideman, and we're gonna have a player when that happens.

Yesterday though I found he was pretty unclean, and it hurt on occasion.

Fast hands for a big guy. Very slick handball to Hannan to set up a goal - mad scramble in the goal square.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
