Have to agree with you Poita.

Am a huge fan of Viney and Jones, but I can't see any reason why Viney couldn't have been named Vice Captain. It still elevates Viney above the remainder of the leadership group, and it identifies him as the captain in waiting.

You have to wonder whether the playing group actually voted Viney in as the captain, but the club and coach have vetoed the choice unless done as co-captains with Jones.

I Feel for Jones...

I don't like co-captains because it symbolises weakness in the people chosen. In other words, having gone from sole captain to one of two co-captains, the club has, in effect, said Nathan Jones isn't good enough to be a captain on his own. I'm sure others will disagree, but if Nathan Jones was indisputably a quality captain, would we have even contemplated having Viney (or anyone else) join him in the role?

I agree this is NOT an endorsement of Jones Captaincy at all. Fine if you want Viney in the group, but make him VC and let him reach the steps needed incremantally. Not a fan of this policy at all!

Not a fan of Co Captains

Out of interest, how does one develop this kind of a view?

I mean, evidence suggests that co-captaincy is absolutely fine.

Is it just the Trengove/Grimes thing?

Because if it's not that, there is absolutely zero sense behind adopting that view.

Jones was also on the list when Trenners and Grimes where capt.

Just Sayin

But back then Jones wasn't the 28 year old, with more games under his belt and existing captaincy experience that he now is.

Capt - Jones

V/C - Viney

LG - Gawn, Lewis, McDonald, Vince

That's all it needs to be (I would actually give Vince the opportunity to decide if he wants to be in it or not).

Lewis doesn't need to be in the top 2 positions to still be able to use his voice.  I'm sure any player is encouraged to speak up at any time, especially if they are walking the talk.

What do I win for Nearest The Pin?

Probably f'all, so I'll just crawl back in to my hole.

Sydney have done co-captains for years. Had no problems.

Clarko turfed Mitchell when he had done nothing wrong and put Hodge in the job. Now he's turfed Hodge and replaced him with a guy who just missed a year with cancer.

Ward and Davis work really well together on field and off for GWS.

The easy call would've been to keep Jones and skipper and Viney as VC. So Goodwin hasn't done this because it was easy. He's done this because he thinks it's right.

Jones has been a great warrior but you can't get extra points because the club has been a basketcase in the past. Otherwise you don't ever raise the standard. He's still captain, as he deserves to be. Sharing the job doesn't have to diminish it.

Goodwin floated the idea near the end of last year. It's not a ridiculous idea at all. If the players and coaches feel Jones and Lewis would lead them well in a battle, giving them both the title doesn't diminish what Jones has worked for. He's still the captain of the club and Lewis is a genuine star of the game. I wouldn't be worried about it dividing the playing group or diminishing the respect the players/coaches have for Jones.

Well, what do you know. Close. Not Lewis, Viney and Jones to lead. Very good. Makes sense.

Most views being expressed critical of the promotion are outsiders views or sentimental ones. Neither of which will result in us lifting the cup.

The promotion suggests (to me at least) that the players, coach and board all see Jack as driving standards and leading this club forward. It's acknowledgement and reward for what Jacks already achieving and doing.

The kids a gun and has earnt the respect of his peers and employers, who want him to represent the club and continue to drive it forward. Big statement by Goodwin and the club and I applaud it. Bring it on Jack!!!

I fail to see any positive to having co-captains.   the players and LG need one person to look to lead them.

Jones for 2 more years, then Viney solo at age 24.

no need to heap pressure on viney at 22, he already put enough pressure on himself to succeed.

No one has mentioned that this may be an indication that Goodwin feels Jones is not an automatic selection throughout 2017... (not my position, just sayin'). That's the only solid logic I can offer for the decision!

Because I just can't see how that can be true. Not a chance we have 22 players better than Jones. And if it was he probably wouldn't be captain and maybe not even in the LG. Roos made it clear to be in the LG you'd have to be capable of leading on field.

I love Viney as much as anyone but he's too young. We should've waited another 1-3 years when Jones is ready to hand the baton over

Nor I.  I don't think it will happen but I hope Jack doesn't get captains blues.

Maybe Lewis's arrival and rapid elevation to the leadership group indicated to the coaches that we needed to change and improve in this area faster than many assumed or are comfortable with?

Maybe Jones is mentoring Vines to bring him up to speed with all the things behind the scenes that Jack would not have seen before.

Personally, I would've preferred if Jones had at least another two years as sole captain before passing the reigns to Viney, who still has a lot to learn about the game considering he's still incredibly young. Obviously, Viney must of really made a substantial impression on the coaches and playing group over the pre-season.

Saying that, good luck Jack! Captain number 46 of the MFC.

This club does some stupid things!!!!

Chunk took over the captaincy when the club was on its knees and has done a brilliant job

What do they do, just as we are coming out the other side, instead of (hopefully) Chunk getting some well deserved credit they kick him in the guts.

Why coulldnt Viney be VC??????

What a load of crap!!!! Sydney had 3 captains and won a flag

Four exclamation marks! I'm trying to work out if that has the same value as 4 "likes" or "0.25 likes".

(By the way, I have no problem with your post. We just disagree about the value of co-captains. For what it's worth, I suspect it makes no difference to a team's prospects of winning a premiership whether they have good or bad captains, single or co-captains, or even no captains at all. And if anyone wants to sing that to the tune of Colonel Bogey March, go ahead.)

He's not ready....

He is very football focussed & driven to the exclusion of just about everything else.

A leader needs to well rounded and have empathy with his teammates.

I don't think Jack has it yet & maybe never will.

A leader also needs to be inclusive and from what I've seen from Jack to date he sometimes tries to do way too much.

I've labelled him a selfish footballer in the past but I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this.

It's going to be interesting to watch his development.

Similar criticisms were given to Jones when he took over. They might even still apply now.

It's just one guy but I've heard Viney has been great for Petracca, whom the Saints labelled as difficult when the passed on him in the draft. Similarly Jones has been really good for Brayshaw, even if he was probably the easier one to mentor.

I don't think Viney's perfect, but if he's ready to take on the responsibility and be accountable for his mistakes sharing the job might just be perfect.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
