Agree on all points. In some ways the game plan the Crows employed in that era had elements of the modern game plan - hard running, big bodied mid fielders, a large group of players who could run through the midfield, rebound off the hb and an emphasis on skilled players who hit targets.

Blight was his coach in his first couple of years and his attacking style no doubt has had a big influence on Goody, who i think i've read knew he wanted to coach whilst still playing and was preparing for the role in the latter part of his career.

Yes Malcolm was allout attack

Yet to do anything in Melbourne Colours.

Great Players are often lousy coaches.

His past record means nothing to what and where he is now.

I hope Roos picked the right person. The club is in a better place than it was, but we are still right on the edge.

Goodwin must win early season games, no other rookie has been given the red carpet schooling that Goodwin got.

I wait for late March.

Honesty is confronting to some...

as a coach he learnt first from James Hird, that is far more relevant to me than gushing reports of him as a player

I hate seeing other sides have epic battles and real rivalries and when they come off the ground, they have nothing left, I hate it because it simply doesn't apply to us.  We have no sides that really hate us, like Collingwood/Essendon, Hawthorn/Essendon, Crows/Port etc. we no longer have any respect from other clubs and I hope that Simon Goodwin will reignite them and turn us in to a side to be feared and hated.

I want to see our players come off the ground every week spent, because they've given their all. If he can do that then he will be known as a good coach.

Fair call. Value for money...

I was a Footy Park member into the late 90s and honestly can't recall much of Goody live. This probably says far more about me than him though.

Gee he was hard to miss, a very good footballer who was surrounded by other very good footballer, but he was a stand out for mine.

I must have been too busy looking at Modra.

Or, as it turns out, Goodwin only averaged 11 disposals across '97-99.

harsh man there skuit debuted in 97!

Averaged 11 in his debut year. Gathered 19 in the GF that year... was a good snippet of what followed

Ave 14 in his 2nd year, however won his 2nd premiership in tbat year too!

Backwards a little 3rd year (12 touches) but heck so did the crows - finished with us near the bottom that year - they weren't good at all then.

From then on averaged about 20+

All good. In no way diminishing his achievements - just originally commented that I don't recall much of him when I attended Crows games in the late 90s. He also happened to be playing alongside McLeod, Hart and Smart in that period.

Might've been able to play but his gambling issues and involvement in Essendons drug cheating leads me to believe he makes poor decisions.

Gun players are often gun coaches because they know what standard is required to get the trophy.

Norm Smith

Lethal

Roosy

Bomber

Blight.

So we can run with that theory.

Fork.. You would find this surprising but all senior coaches have all had interesting field issues or past that many wouldn't realize. Difference is that its this one that has made the media and headlines.

Mark Thompson had a very wild off field personality that resulted in a few trouble with the law and ex players. Didn't stop him from winning 2 premierships. Even Kevin Sheedy said in an interview years ago that he was borderline alcoholic because he would drink wine every night and it was starting to affect his marriage and game day performance.

Cut Goody some slack.. These are life lessons he has now learnt that i expect will pass on to our players when he sits down and mentors them one on one.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
