I think we have the capabiliy to stretch teams with size. Vandenberg is a midfielder but big enough to play as a key which is a huge asset. Playing him as a "4th" tall could cause all sorts of problems. He is mobile enough to play tall or small depending on the situation. Watts is quickish for his size and is capable of out running tall defenders or out marking small ones. With Kent and Garlett around we should have enough pace if they can be consistant with their pressure. T Smith is a natural footballer and I'd like to see him get a run at it early in the season but if he struggles to cement his spot then I think Pedo comes in. Kent, Tracc, Brayshaw, Salem and maybe Hannan can all rotate between mid and forward.

Maybe we could see a forward lineup something like this? Unfortunatly that means Watts continues as ruck relief but I like Watts' skill around the ground when he plays the ruck role anyway. Watts, Lewis and Salem with Jones, Viney and Tyson is a pretty good mix of skill and grunt in and around the contest, but I digress.

HF:  Kent, Hogan, Watts
F:    Garlett, TSmith, Vandenberg

Rotating with Kent: CP5, Brayshaw, Salem. Tyson? (Tyson's a bit of an after thought but he can kick a goal)

Edit:
Obviously this leaves out the Weid. While I like him and think he will be a star I still believe he should spend more time at Casey than in the seniors. He will get a go at some stage. Either form or injury above him will give him the chance but I wouldn't have him in the team come round 1. (A fantastic BLT or whatever its called series might change my mind)

My concern with the Weid is whether he's actually going to be strong enough on the ground. Speed and pressure will be kings again in 2017. The way the games going you really need that in a key forward. Im hoping he's not an old prototype in a new game. Time will tell.

Surprised they haven't updated the player lists on the club site.

Surprised? The MFC club website is seriously one of the most useless in the AFL by a long shot. Some of the players pics are still from 2015. Whoever is running that area needs to be sacked.

The 3rd tall will need to assist in the ruck when Gawn is resting. So its likely Pedo who lacks consistency. So he will likely spend some time at Casey as usual. Watts did provide some relief last year. Maybe Keilty will get to show what he can do in the pre season.

I have been comlaining about this for many years now...we should take up a petition and give it to Jen Watts or Ryan Larkin

I think Pedo is consistently underrated by many here.

He is a solid mark and always provides a contest. His last quarter in the win against Hawthorn was very good - it illustrates what he can do.

Whilst he is clearly on borrowed time given the future development of Weideman, he is still a very effective option. Contracts are no longer given to list cloggers by this club.

In what way is he underrated ?

Clearly he's a solid backup as Weideman is given games, but just as clearly he's a fringe player.

He played 9 AFL games in 2016 and 8 VFL games.  He would have played more games at Casey if not for their 3 byes in about 6 weeks, as it was at that time he was playing VFL footy.

Imo, he won't match his 9 AFL games in 2017.

Good teams have good (depth) players on the fringe both to pressure those in the firsts, and as back up for injuries and form lapses.  Pedersen fills this rôle perfectly.  Not underrated nor overrated.

IMVHO he is an important part of our 2017 list, and how he and others perform will determine what happens thereafter.

I remember the great Dennis Cometti remarking in one of the Collingwood games - "Pedersen is a role player but he knows his role and he plays it well".

I think we already have our third tall forward and that is Watts. To my mind he is a perfect fit in that role. He is versatile and reads the play well in both attack and defence. He can run all day, take a mark and has great delivery by foot and hand. he is the hardest in the team for the opposition to get a matchup on.

What we need to be looking at is a second forward to work close with Hogan. Hogan is very mobile and a good one on one mark. I personally have a question mark over his possessions when he gets them up the ground as he seems to take an age to make a decision on what to do. That part of his game does not seem to be instinctive as yet.

At this stage I would be looking at Pedersen to step up along side Hogan, in the early stages of the season at least. It may well be a case of selecting horses for courses as we have a number of other options. Tim Smith is an interesting addition to the forwards as I think, from the little I have seen of him that he could add an element of defensive pressure that would be a step up. He also can take a mark and kick a goal. There will be teams we will play where that defensive pressure will be a real advantage. Weeds will get a run or 4 in the team and I think he will perform well. I liked what I saw in the Hawthorn game and I like that we do not need to rush him and push him to perform. We are giving him a chance to develop at the right pace.

Will Hulett get a run there in 2017? They might give him a taste if they have the opportunity and he is showing something.

With the additions and development of players in the middle I think we will get better and more frequent delivery into the forward 50 and we have to make sure we get the structures right at the pointy end to ensure we get the rewards.

[snip]Bernie Vince, Nev Jetta, Angus Brayshaw and Max Gawn are just a few to name that their profile pics haven't been updated since Pre season 2015. For example Bernie Vince is a number of players whos player description haven't been updated since last year. For all of this year they didn't bother to write up that he was the 2015 best and fairest winner.

You may be right about Pedo not playing 9 games in 2017, barring injury, but I disagree.

Gawn needs a chopout during games and the FD is reluctant to continue using Watts.

Pedo can play key back or key forward for periods in a game and also give the chopout for the ruckman.

He can also take a big mark and kick a goal and has also goaled on the run or from snapshots.

ATM I can't see who provides all that better than him.

While I don't see him with us for many more years, I think he will still be important for us this year.

"You disagree" ?

I doubt there's much to disagree with.

I'm well aware of his attributes and whether he plays 6, 8, 10 or 12 games it matters little to the debate about whether he's "underrated" or not.

He's clearly a fringe player, as evidenced by his 2016.

I'm certain they'll play Weideman ahead of him where possible, ala Oscar last year over Dunn.  I don't see Weideman and Pedersen often in the same team.

I disagreed on him playing less than 9 games, as I said I thought he was the one they would use as the spare parts man, as I couldn't see who else they would use.

Weideman will not be thrown into the ruck, even as a chopout.

Who takes the Pedo role?

8, 10, 12, who cares ?  Not worth arguing about and thrust of my post was in response to whether he was underrated or not.

It may not be ideal for Watts to ruck sparingly, but I suspect it will happen again.  If Pedersen's backup ruck role was so important he would have played 22 games last year and not 9.

I'm not certain how they'll improvise and don't much care.  They'll have a plan.

I agree that Weideman won't be part of that plan.

I want Weideman playing as many games as practicable and that means Pedersen playing at Casey.  Hogan, Weideman, Watts and Pedersen doesn't work.  And I don't want Pedersen taking up a spot on the bench.

If Weideman plays 15 AFL games Pedersen can take the other 7.

Havent read through all the posts, but has anyone mentioned Tim Smith?

Feels like he could be a draft steal be and very good player straight away

If Weideman isn't part of the plan as a back up ruckman, why would you suggest the number of games they play is somehow interdependent?

Unless Pedersen is in there to play the back up ruck role or KPP replacement, I don't believe there's much of a place for him in the team at all. The mix of players you've alluded to (plus possibly Tim Smith) would all be ahead of him.

We therefore use Watts as the second ruckman (somewhat risky?), play Spencer (might work but not always) or have another plan in place.

And play Pedersen if all else fails.

Just to give a young body a chopout, not so much as a ruck option.  If they want to manage Weideman I see Pedersen as his forward replacement.

I speak to the players on a regular basis, don't need a list from club website, who cares if photos are missing, some 'worry' 'about the.most inane things

Ill let the guys who update the site know that their jobs are on the line

As for the 3rd tall, not sure we need a 3rd 'tall', can see Tim Smith and Hulett both being given a go in pre season to show what they can do

Haha hows the back peddling from this bloke.

Personally i dont give two shits whether you speak to players. Stop trying to put yourself in a pedestal because you 'speak to players'. Your nothing but and old human being like majority of normal society. They don't see you as a friend. Your just a typical die hard supporter that they have to put up with from time to time.

And guess what Saty, there are people who actually 'worry' like my step son who went to do a favourite footy player project on Bernie Vince only to realize that it hadn't been updated since pre season 2015.

They have a simple job to do and hasn't been done for nearly 2 years. Poor.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom
