Just watched the little video on new Saint Josh Battle. Is it just me or do the St Kilda recruiters have a more specific type than George Costanza?

Flat face, pasty skin, eyes a little close together and generally a meat axe in body shape and personality

Dare I say they employ a slightly different strategy I like to call the 'yes d!ckheads rule'

I know a lot of people are really positive about them but i think that in a couple of years time they will be seen very differently, i don't think they have enough top end talent compared to the other young sides coming up and they are relying way to much on the older guys to hold things together.

i can see them being a North Melbourne, consistent finals but not really getting close to a flag

Yeah I think Roo and Joey contribute far more than their "old man grey" status suggests.

True. Except compared to what we did in the rebuild they have been outright geniuses. I guess using us as an example is probably stupid as everyone looks good by comparison to THAT. But they held on to their olders players way longer than we did and have set themselves up pretty well I reckon.  Robbo, Jeff White and obviously junior should all have played on for a bit. I guess its easy in retrospect.

The saints  did drop but are suddenly right back in the mix and I think they're putting a team together that isnt going to drop that much when those guys leave. However they may not really soar either. I think they're going to be 6-10 for a few years.....and, as much as I hate saying it, Im not sure we will knock them off next year.  Im hoping we will be 6-10 also,  before hitting another level in a year or two.

I think Battle will end up steal of the draft. He can play. Was a good pick up. Long can also play. He is exactly what St Kilda need. I think St Kilda have drafted really well the past few years - and especially this year. Steele and Stevens identify a need for close in contested work. That should free up Stevens and Armitage. I have been really impressed with St KIlda, as I expected they would be bottom 2 the past few years. They have managed to bounce back. Bruce was a great pick up from GWS, and I think McCartin shows promise. Billings needs to lift and I expect he will. Montagna looks just about done to me, he is a bit of a cherry picker. They can cover him easily. Riewoldt will eventually be covered by McCartin, but I don't rule out the possibility of Josh Battle stepping into that role.

I keep hearing how great the saints are for "fast tracking" a rebuild.

If I look at their top 10 best and fairest results, and Roo, montagna, armitage, geary and dempster all made the top 10. Armitage and Geary are already  28 years old and won't carry the torch for long when dempster, roo, montagna and Gilbert call it quits over the next 24 months.

I would much rather have our list that has a much even spread of age and talent.

Saints better hope their kids turn out to be guns, if they don't they are in strife.

Well this is a very strange and specific complaint.

I think they'll beat us in round 1 because they've had better coaching for longer, match up well against us and play their home ground particularly well. I also think they've recruited very well through the draft rounds to create a nice balanced list that probably has more depth than ours does, although I do favour our top end talent.

I don't take particular notice in recruits looks so all I'll say on that is I'd never be adverse to drafting a footballer because they look too much like a footballer. I'd recruit a neanderthal if they could play.

Before I die I would like to see just 1 occasion where we actually tag Riewoldt - Just 1 will do.

You don't "tag" a bloke like Riewoldt. He rarely plays deep so it's impossible to constantly have a KPP on him. Teams have played him the same way for years: play off him, force him to the flanks, and a force a centred kick. We did that both times we played them this year but being at Etihad we just didn't have the cattle back for the switch.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
