Son of Jimmy and grandson of Happy Hannan!

I understand now: the descendants of Logie winners make great Demon Footballers, right?

Guys...settle

There was Jimmy Hannan (Channel 9).... and there was Happy Hammond (Channel 7)

Different chaps, different TV stations

Any way have we picked up a player, or a variety performer

Welcome to the club Mitch

As the pick got near, I thought we would take Darcy Cameron for Ruck depth.

We would have to be certainties to take a Ruckman with one of our Rookie picks.

As for Hannan, good luck to him.

Hard to get excited about another 189 - 191 cm forward who can take a hanger.  Jeremy Howe, Stephen Pitt, Matthew Bate (on lead rather than hanger), Sean Smith and son and so forth

They weren't that height but The Wiz and Robbo had me excited. As did a certain Jurrah fella. The game is getting taller so at his height Hannon is really a flanker more than a 3rd tall. There won't be any delusions that he can be a key forward like there were with Howe and Bate.

I don't think he is like any of those players at all.

Could play back, forward or on a wing.

Would be surprised if he didn't play senior footy next year.   I expect he will be banging the door down early.

Classy player,  but of course it remains to be seen whether he can make it at the next level.

Inside Football

Mitch Hannan 9/3/94 Ht: 189.0cm Wt: 83.0kg Footscray

"The rangy forward played in Footscray's premiership team 12 months after having a best-on-ground hand in St Bernards' success in the A section Amateurs. The left-footer can pluck a high mark and intervene to help turn a match his team's way, as evidenced by a brilliant burst in the final quarter of the semi final against Essendon. One of the VFL's best draft hopes." - VFL expert Paul Amy

Strengths: athleticism, marking

NTI: endurance, versatility

Mitch Hannan (Footscray, 22, 189cm, 84kg): the left-footer gained plenty of attention with a spectacular grab against Collingwood in Round 18. But a Moorcroft-like mark earlier in the season was even better. The mid-sized forward was best-afield for St Bernard’s in the VAFA grand final in 2015 and took his place in the Dogs’ VFL premiership 12 months later. He’d set Footscray on the road to Etihad Stadium by booting three goals in the final quarter of the semi-final against Essendon.

Fitness would have to be the issue. He missed a lot of 2015 with a broken arm and so has only really done the 1 preseason at VFL level with the Dogs. They might have to treat him like an 18 year old recruit in terms of building his fitness.

Being a St. Bernards Old Boy, took special note of Hannan when I watched the Footscray VFL games, and was rapt that we picked him. Unlike some of the players we've picked up from other clubs recently in Bugg, Kennedy, Melksham and McKenna, Hannan has some X Factor. I'd give him more chance of having an impact at AFL level than the players listed, and the likes of ANB and JKH.

Our last St. Bernards boy won a B&F in a GF year. Strawbs O'Dwyer.

Without derailing the thread too much Bugg, ANB, Melksham and with a good injury run JKH and McKenna are all very good endurance runners. JKH, McKenna and in some way Melksham are noted for their skills. Bugg, ANB and Ben Ken are all big ball winners. And whilst he has bad games on his day Ben Ken plays with speed, grunt and goal kicking. My point is I think they are on the list for a reason and they bring complimentary skills to round out the list. Melksham was the only one of those guys drafted/traded for a pick in the first 2 rounds anyway, so we weren't expecting stars from the others and I think if we chase stars with every pick in the draft you'll end up with an inconsistent list.

Hannan has more X factor, but he needs to, he's a 22 year old with 18 VFL games to his name! And even if it was pick 46 he was our first pick in the draft so we'd be hoping for a top 30-35 player on our draft board.

I saw the VFL prelim against Essendon and he looked good.

I'm predicting 4 Brownlows.

Overnight on Twitter, Mark Stevens was effusive about his prospects at the club -

Mitch Hannan won't take long to break into Dees lineup. I'm tipping Round 1.

A bit optimistic I think.

Also, I wouldn't trust MS to know our list all that well. Pretty well stocked in those areas he's trying to break into.

After slotting Hogan, Garlett and Pedo/Weid into the forward line, Hannan would be competing with Watts, Petracca, Vanderberg, Harmes, Kennedy, Kent, Kennedy-Harris, Bugg, Trengove, maybe even someone like Brayshaw, Melksham or Vince who are squeezed out of the middle.

Just can't see it happening.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
