2016 Tackle Stats

2016 – The Demons were the most tackled team in the league.

Running into danger by taking the game on?

The old handballing to a stationary team-mate?

Our focus on contested footy and being first to the ball?

Deliberately absorbing tackles to free up a spare man?

Or just a young and slow team?

Does this stat indicate anything about out game-plan/team balance? Will it change this year? Sydney were the second-most tackled team in 2016 as well as laying the most tackles. Bulldogs were 5^th and 12^th respectively.

I like it. Shows that we had the pill enough to win games but wasted it with turnovers etc.

Our stoppage and clearance work will be the key to our success.

We were great in the contest but we didn't spread wide enough. Short handballs increase the number of tackles you are exposed to. Long handballs to running targets and accurate kicks, short or long, will reduce the number of tackles.

I guess you can't do everything in one season. We built a game around stoppages and contested ball. Now we need to add fierce spread and accurate kicking. I'm really keen to see how goody tackles this

Teams know that if you tackle melbourne and put pressure n the ball carrier they will turn it over. It's been that way for some time but was clearly the strategy for a bunch of teams including St Kilda, Essendon, Geelong etc

Composure, decision making and being able to absorb pressure is the next step for our team.

I haven't had the time to look at this game by game but I expect there will be big differences week to week.   As a young team when the handballs were a bit off and the run wasn't there we were sitting ducks for the tackler. Hopefully lots less examples of this next year

Teams are drawing tackles as in RugbyLeague more than ever.

Getting two hands ffree and having runners each side helps but Footscray and Hawthorn as well as Sydney are allowed to just throw it or drop it into a team mates lap as they run past the tackle.

I also can't be arsed looking it up individually/can't find the stats - other than that we were the most tackled team. I do recall however that Sydney put on a total record against (in that horrible bogged-down game) and that maybe Parker (Syd) and Libbers (Footscray) - both games we lost - set all-time equal individual records (19?). I wonder if the tackle differential is a barometer for how we are traveling - if we had less tackles against in the games that we won and if it was an opposition tactic?  I currently have terrible net access/too many Bintangs - anyone else know how to get a hold of these week-by-week stats?

Interesting observation 

I take as a sign of a 'good team' thats learning. Much like we went from learning defence to learning attack .... Once upon a time, we didn't get tackled because we didn't have the ball... Now we have the ball..... So now we get tackled! ... Next we learn how to not get tackled, OR get tackled but keep possession. 

Its all good. At this time of the year how can you think otherwise.

I was in Nusa Penida. Not so pretty. I'm now in Koh Chang Noi in the west of Thailand near the Burmese border. The purported lack of internet keeps the party plebs at bay. No sightings of CP5 during my travels as such.

Tackle stats, hard ball gets, one percenters and all the other stats so lovingly and meticulously complied and analysed are only inputs to the only stat that matters - scores on the board. To focus on one stat in isolation is a waste of time and resources - it is the interplay between them all and their combined effect that defines the team plan and style of play and informs the coaching staff on training and future team plans.

As Luke Beveridge has shown this year, it is the skill of the coaches to adapt the stats to the strengths and innate abilities of the players that matters, not some pre-ordained plan based on the stats that might not match the players. If we think back, how many teams have fallen for this trap and failed (run and carry?).

This is why I am fascinated with Cloke going to the Bulldogs. Cloke is a beast of a contested mark with a host of deficiencies. Will be interesting to see if Beveridge has a bit role for him.

Good at winning contested ball.
Have the games best ruckman to feed the ball to a midfielder who's often tackled 
Over-posses the ball without making progress from congestion
Lack breakaway speed
Don't use the ball cleanly enough in space and therefore create more congested/contested situations
Play in an outdoor stadium in Melbourne!

Overall I'd say it isn't a bad problem to have. We want to be a team winning first hands on the ball. We just need to keep training in how to break out of that congestion.

Good thread. We played a contested game, we handball short and our younger bodies made it easier to stick tackles against us.

Nice speech tiers. And I'm sure our expert footy department would agree with you - focusing on the individual components of football like tackling and such is simply a waste of time and resources and we should just concentrate on kicking goals. Do, don't think. (Apply sarcastica font here). Sure - stats in isolation can be irrelevant and it's the interplay, but the question was how these tackle stats interrelate with and represent our team-plan/style of play?
