My take on the events that occurred & what will happen:

- Lewis goes for meeting expecting one thing and then being told to look at other options.

- Lewis approaches Melbourne and a deal is worked out- Hawthorn then decide to back flip due to Mitchell 100% leaving.

- Lewis becomes annoyed with the Hawks as they told him to look elsewhere, then once he had made up his mind they said no.

- Pickering speaks to the Hawks to advise Lewis still wants to leave. Hawks realise what has occurred and advise they will get the deal done, however it needs to be less public regarding the conflict to appease the majority of members- Pickering comes out saying Lewis isn't angry but they are looking at options. 

- Monday/Tuesday Lewis will be traded, along with a press conference about how he felt he needed a fresh start and there was no bad blood between himself and the club.

- 5 years time- Lewis is on the show 'On the Couch' with Mike Sheahan to discuss what 'really' went down.

Pick 53 Oscar, 53 Tom, 57 Hunt.

Think of names like that when you think of 48.  No guarantees we pick up players of that calibre, but every chance with Taylor et al.

I laughed when I read Jeff''s views that i was the Hawks clinical decisions that separated them from the pack  and then attempting to overlay that on the debacle of the past week and such. By comparison we have shown ourselves quite savvy over the past few trade periods .  We dont show our cards.

Nah if anything the spin will be he wanted out,  and all we had to deal with was what they got. They would look way worse if they're left with a disgruntled player who doesn't want to be there. Given their relative abilities and the age of both players, the Hawks accepting pick 48 for Lewis would be like the MFC accepting pick 70 for Nathan Jones at the end of next season (if somehow the same sort of circumstances surrounded Jones)  Would we be happy to sign up for that deal?  I suspect we'd want our club to play hard-ball.

I'm prepared to concede that the deal for Lewis (if it happens) will possibly be for a 3rd rounder but there's no way the HFC or it's supporters are going to be "happy" with pick 48 for such a good player.

Let's not forget that Lewis is contracted and is worth more to the Hawks if he is forced to see out his contract (disgruntled or not) Lewis playing for them vs pick 48 in exchange? 

Lewis is a pro's pro and he'd probably do the 'professional' thing and have another great year for them (if he stayed) ... the Hawks would then almost certainly spend all year trying to get the bloke to re-sign for a year or 2 (he's a free agent at the end of next year)

I'm not sure we're going to be able to acquire him cheaply.

If reports are correct Lewis has been treated shabbily by Clarkson and they are now trying to redeem themselves.  Like other clubs' champs he wants to play on beyond 1 year. 

If mfc treated Nathan with disrespect and as a result in his heart he felt he could no longer wear the red and blue, then yes I would want mfc to accept pick 70.  Nathan has earnt the right to go elsewhere under similar distasteful circumstances, even more so than Lewis who has 4 premiership medals for his work.

For me it is not about age, it is about respecting a champion of the club.  Look at Geelong - they have let all their champions get to where they wanted to go:  Chapman to Ess, pick 84. Hunt to Giants, pick 75.  Podsiadly to Crows, pick 64.  Johnson to Giants a future (2016) 5th round pick. 

Love your work Macca but on this one I see it differently to your good self.

Having said all that I'm not too fussed what pick he goes for as long as mfc end up with the players they want to balance our list by the end of the draft.

 

 

Edit: just saw your next post.  Pick 48 might be very valuable to Hawks to weave into the trade for O'Meara.  Doubt they would take 48 to the draft.

No, it would be the equivalent at the end of 2018, not next season.  Lewis is nearly two years older than Jones.

And two years is a long time in footy.

It was Jeff's clinical view that destroyed the Liberal Party in Victoria when he was in charge.

LH ... you might accept pick 70 for Jones if the circumstances were the same but I would definitely want the club to play hard-ball and I reckon most of our supporters would too. 

The club is always bigger than any individual even if it was a loyal servant such as Nate Jones.  In fact, if we couldn't get fair compensation for Jones I'd make him stay & play.   When push comes to shove I want what is best for the club.

I want Lewis cheap but it may not happen because the Hawks have to agree to selling him cheaply.

The circumstances for that trade were vastly different ... it was a salary cap issue as far as I'm concerned.  That's 3-4 times I've mentioned that now (in the last 3-4 pages of this thread) 

I see the Mitchell trade as a different and separate trade.

It's actually 20 months so the difference would be 8 months if Jones wanted out at the end of next year. 

Champion elite A grade players tend to go a bit longer than B+ players so the 8 months difference would be cancelled out.  I hope you're not going to start calling Jones an A grader because previously, you haven't.

My only interest in your (incorrect) assertion was that the trade was the equivalent of Jones being traded next year for pick 70.  If anything, it would be the equivalent of him being traded in 2018.

Lewis played nearly all of 2016 as a 30 year old (bar 5 games) and Jones played all of 2016 as a 28 year old.  2018 is a much closer analogy than end of season 2017.

And why would I start calling Jones and A-grader ?

Oh come on LH, you can't start using pick 48 in that sense.  Pick 48 is not good compensation for a gun footballer with 3 elite years left.  It just isn't.  If you don't value him that highly then that largely explains our point of difference.

If we do get him for pick 48 great ... I'm just not sure its a 'fait accompli.'  If the deal falls through we'll be hearing the spin.

By the way, some of the reports are that we've offered Lewis a 3 year deal on good coin without any conditions.  My reading of that is that the club may feel we'll get more than 3 years out of him.

The bloke is a star.  VC of the best team for the last 10 years, BOG in the first final this year before playing injured in the 2nd final. Runner up in the b&f for a team that finished 3rd on the ladder.
