Ill always take money back, but yes its annoying when you get one. I took nature strip one out in that leg and had only 2 selections in the first leg. I had 4 selections in each of the last 2 legs. So pretty close yes. Cant wait for the start of the autumn carnival......do you ever go to the tracks? I like going to Caulfield when i get the chance.....perhaps a DL racing day is on the cards!

I used to go to the feature race-days (only) a lot in previous years Wadda and am planning on going again down the track (moving in the near future to inner city Melbourne)

As previously mentioned,  I gravitated (along with a few friends) to getting decent seats with a great view.  All 3 big venues are great when you've got a good vantage point near the finishing line.  I wouldn't do the madding crowd bit again.  With decent seats even if you lose a bit you've had a good day at the races watching the best horses going around.

As for one of my Trifecta systems ... 3 - 6 - 6 gives one 60 combinations and about 20 of those combo's can pay anywhere between $200 - $2000.  But equally,  there's about 20 combo's that will give money back,  a small loss or thereabouts.  And then there's the inbetween combo's that might pay alright or a small to reasonable profit.  I take the good with the bad.

The Zephyr really gives you a run for your money.....a lot like the Dees do!! I think the weight beat him. I really dont understand why he carries 59.5? Its not like hes won a heap of races.......

When Dan was in good form and going through the grades his rating enabled him to enter strong races with a light weight and it turned out as a success.

As it stands today Dan is an 83 rating I believe. For him to gain a light weight he would need to enter a benchmark 90 race or higher(listed/group). In that case, due to the fact his best is beyond him he would be way out of his depth in strong races.

Connections are in a tough spot now, for him to be a realistic chance of winning again they would need to target a weak race like an 80 benchmark or country handicap, but all that does is make him carry the grandstand.

I hope that makes sense a tad, I really shouldn't be typing on the back of a few scotches..

Yeah Macca, I think Dan worked too hard early but in saying that I think the younger horses are too good for him these days.

Sooner or later I'm going to whiff completely D77 but keep in mind that I would never advocate a large outlay.   $20 on a 3-6-6 combo can return 33% if successful and $30 will net 50% (if successful) I always try and do the form before I look at the odds. 

But for this race I'll do a 4-6-6 combo.  A $20 outlay returns 25% whilst a $30 outlay returns 37.5%

I like any of 4 runners to win ... Nothingilikemore,  Exultant,  More Than Lucky & Time to Celebrate and I've got ''Singapore Sling' & 'Lockheed' for 2nd & 3rd only.

Will almost certainly end up going 4-6-6 tomorrow at Sha Tin (race 9) ... I don't want to leave the 3 out to win (Time to Celebrate)  ... and with that name it's a bit of an omen pick anyway. 

4-6-6 is a bit liking boxing 5 with 1 extra ... cost a tiny bit more but there's no 'What if' factor

Ended up 2 busy for racing on that day Macca and D77. How did you go? Im talking to my only other punting mate Brett who is a Cats supporter, and lives in Sydney. (Ok its hard to find good punting mates haha) But he spotted that Ace High is nominated in all Winxs upcoming races. He is also the surprising odds of 51/1.

The races are: Apollo Stakes 17th Feb. Winx 1.08 Ace High 51, Chipping Norton Stakes 3rd March Winx 1.20 Ace High 26, Queen Elizabeth Sat 14th April. Winx 1.40, Ace High 51.

Now, if you can find a bookie to roll over the 3 Winx races, (not sure you can do it on the TAB), you will return 1.81 over the 3 races. That is probably the best way to go. However.....I really like Ace High, and if not the quinella, could he actually roll the legend in one of these? At 51/1 worth a small flutter perhaps? Thoughts??

Hi Wadda.

You might as well have a go on Ace High at those odds and if it wins you become the legend for backing the horse that beats Winx. 

I was on Foxplay last September when Winx ran it down in the last 10 metres and beat it by a whisker, I thought I was a clever little puppy for picking the horse that almost beat her.

If you were to bet on Ace High now and for whatever reason it doesn't run you should be able to get a refund, as the Tab odds aren't displayed as All In for the Apollo and  Chipping Norton.

Money back (again!) ... which is often the case in the group races Wadda.  But not always I miss a lot more on 2-5-5 but it's a much smaller outlay for a decent percentage.  3-6-6 has to include a couple of roughies to make the exercise worthwhile.

And 'Ace High' is definitely one to look out for following it's Derby success.  Before that won over 2000m & 1800m in the lead up to the classic. 

Was chatting to a mate about how we might bet in the Winx races ...

• In Australia have Winx to win one-out in a First 4 ... then 3-6-6 (2nd,  3rd &  4th) or 2-5-5 (2nd,  3rd & 4th)   So it's 1-3-6-6 or 1-2-5-5.   The pools will be huge so the right combo can still pay a fair bit. 
• If or when Winx races In Europe go the traditional multiple trifecta (3-6-6 or 2-5-5) ... in other words, include Winx to win but also include 1 or 2 horses that might beat it.  Again, the pools will be big and a lot might just have Winx as the winner only.

It should always be remembered that Winx not only always wins (here) but it runs great times as well - all at WFA level.  You could also load up on the quinella/exacta - Winx/Ace High. 

Anyway,  there's a few feature races in Oz to look out for over the weekend (to keep the interest up)

• Friday 26th  Warwick Farm  Race 6  Australia Day Cup  2400m (LR)
• Friday 26th  Moonee Valley  Race 4  Australia Stakes  1200m (G2)
• Saturday 27th  Caulfield   Race 7  John Dillon Stakes  1400m (LR)
• Saturday 27th  Rosehill  Race 7  Carrington Stakes 1400m (LR)

And there's 2 big Group 1's at Sha Tin on Sunday that are worth a bit of a look ... I'll be definitely having a look!

• Sunday 28th Sha Tin  Race 7  The Centenary Sprint Cup  1200m (G1)
• Sunday 28th Sha Tin  Race 8  The Stewards Cup  1600m (G1)

Finally,  here's last year's Queen Anne Stakes from Royal Ascot (Winx is being earmarked to start her European campaign with this race) ... you've just gotta love the 1600m long straight!

With a hot weekend coming up it's a good time to spend indoors and enjoy the racing.

Wow, 1600m down a straight and the winner still wanted to run off the track when it got the wobbles.

There's often an ulterior motive in posting up the links to the feature races that I might have a bet on D77 ... rather than searching out the races again I can simply go to the 'land racing thread and click on the links.  Problem solved in a jiffy. 

I really do like the fields in both of those Sha Tin G1 races ... had a bit of luck a ways back with a number of the runners engaged.   There's a few Aussie jockeys involved as well.  The Stewards Cup especially is a real International affair.

Ok a few things i noticed tomorrow @Caulfield......In the last Race i like Sohool to win. Jacquinot Bay is an interesting runner.....started her career when John Howard was Prime Minister ....(well not quite)....but is just getting better.......has only missed a place once in her last 8 starts!

Petrology is another strange one, it really likes to run a place at good odds......Race 8, I also like Dollar for Dollar for the win.

Race 7 The top 4 seem to have it between them.....thrown em all in the quaddie!

Race 6 Its too hard for me... any suggestions?

Thanks Wadda, I'll take that quaddie.

 I will include the 7 ( Diapason) in race 6 and 6 (Petrology) in race 8. Like you stated, Petrology is hard to catch but it runs on more often than not and does place at long odds. Doesn't get beaten by a long margin usually even when it misses the place.

I've only really looked (closely) at race 8 but I like your 2 choices Wadda ... I've included both in a multiple trifecta. 

As for race 6 ... after a quick glance I like the the 5,  4 & 1 in that order.  You've got it covered (hopefully) with your 5 choices of 1, 3,  4,  5 & 7.  Good luck!

Just another note on Winx ... if the horse does travel overseas the connections might want to avoid a confrontation with 'Enable' ... it won horse of the year last year as a 3yo filly.  Won 5 Group 1's including the 'Arc' - it's more of a 2000m - 2400m horse but it looks like it would probably brain them at 1600m as well.  The acceleration it shows at the end of it's races is a sight to behold. 

Here's 'Enable' winning the 'Arc' but the video will probably link to it's other successes last year - the commentary is great for all sorts of reasons too ...

It would be fantastic if 'Enable' were to come to our shores and you never know,  it could happen in the future D77.  Maybe the Autumn rather than the Spring because of the crossover of the seasons in both hemispheres (targeting the Australia Cup,  The BMW & The Queen Elizabeth Stakes?)  It probably won't be this year though as we would have already heard about it. 

I thought of an idea that might keep kicking the thread along ... we each pick 1 horse for the upcoming weekend as our top pick/will win/moral/will at least run a place/sure thing.  We then have the choice of combining the picks in a multi if we so wish.  Or, if there are enough picks by enough people,  one can pick the eyes out of it.  Multi's can be put on which can include different meetings at fixed odds - that's at the TAB anyway.

As an example,  I would have nominated 'Cordero' in the Australia Day Cup at Warwick Farm today (it won - just!)  In the end,  I didn't put a trifecta on in the race because I couldn't find the right combo - but I did like the winner.  Because I do trifectas a lot I often find myself with the above dilemma.  There is nothing else this weekend that is jumping out at me but others here would probably have a fancied runner I'm sure.

Even 3 or 4 favourites can still add up to a sizeable combined odds (e.g. 3 x 4 x 3 x 2 = 72)  Place only on occasions? ... sometimes that is the better way. 

There's a few here that may just mainly read the thread that could join in if they so wish.  At the moment it's like '3-Way Turf Talk' (haha) but we could do with 3 or 4 more regulars.

Anyway,  it's just a thought.

Ha ha!  Of course we find out after the event that Weir thought the horse could have been a bit underdone - tell us beforehand please Darren! 

That race was really tricky - in the end I liked Brave Smash as well but a case could have been made for any of the 6 horses to win.  The Tri & F4 in that race were healthy dividends,  all things considered.

Anyway,  my take on offering a tip for a multi would be that if I can't see anything jumping out at me,  I'll refrain.  I don't like to guess. 

But apart from keeping the thread ticking over,  it gives us a chance to combine our thoughts for a possible profit.  2 heads are better than 1 and all that, D77.

Tricky indeed, small field, add the Valley factor and quite often a speed horse will take some catching in a sprint race. In saying that, I still felt Brave Smash was the top choice.

Lol, I much preferred the appraisal from Weir on Big Dukes' failure in the Mooney Valley Cup back in the spring.

When asked on radio a day or so about the poor showing, he simply replied " the horse went sh*thouse."  No sugar coating that time.

Lol, I much preferred the appraisal from Weir on Big Dukes' failure in the Mooney Valley Cup back in the spring.

When asked on radio a day or so about the poor showing, he simply replied " the horse went sh*thouse."  No sugar coating that time.

Weir is certainly a character ... and an excellent trainer.  You often can't afford to leave out any of his horses.  Some jockeys are like that too (Bowman rode 2 winners yesterday)

Anyway,  with regards to posting up a tip,  I will almost certainly stick to the group races and in those races there is often a standout horse at non-prohibitive odds ... again,  the place odds only can also be tempting.  If we by chance end up with 5 or 6 legs then every add-on can often keep at least doubling the total odds.  And we can even leave something out of the multi if it doesn't appeal - each individual has a choice.

As it stands, it might just be 3 or maybe 4 picks but that's ok.  I also reckon that it can't be a compulsory thing either - we either as individuals put in a tip in any given week or we don't.  We all get caught up doing other things and it's not always possible to read up on the form and then post up a tip.

Good morning one and all ! My Australia Day celebrations started off at a house warming in Castlemaine and went downhill from there. There was so much thunder and lightning on the way home, that the petrol station in Daylesford was refusing to sell fuel ! Luckily i limped home anyway.

So, ive just managed to troll through the above posts and i totally concur. I like looking at other peoples suggested tips because i seem to have the unenviable knack of reading any given form guide and completely missing the obvious! Now if you'd like to attract more people to the thread, may i suggest a name change? Im not sure how you change thread titles, but i think the OP can do it? The OP only posted once here, so we may have to send him a message, (or write to DL). Im open to any suggestions for a title change, but my first thought was, Punter2Punter, or The Punting Thread. Not totally original, but nevertheless may have the desired effect.

I think the idea of a best bet for the day is a good one. If only you had of posted Cordero Macca, as i spent a good part of the afternoon speaking to a friend whos 2nd name was Cordero! But there you go. Its nice to have a standout horse, as it can be very useful in a leg here and there. If only there were such a thing!! I like the standout leg, because at the end of the day, you have to punt on something! If you can snare a standout, then your return will most likely be greater.

Thanks for liking my Quad. I dont mind the old quaddie. I especially loved the days when you got 2 legs for the one number. ie 4 and 14. Lost count of how many times the second number would get up! I also like going skinny one leg and wide in another. Trying to snag a one out and pick the roughy in a field leg is my favourite form of punting (apart from the all ups). As i said you have to at some stage bet on something, so i like to throw one in here and there.

Also Macca, i concur with the non compulsory nature, as stuff happens and punting can take a distant second to lifes callings. Good luck to all and may the punt be with you!

Ps what sort of run was that from the 3yo Enable! and what about the track! Left and right hand turns....what next, witches hats!?? (ok, yes we will leave that to the Dees!)

I do know one thing ... there are more than just 5 or 6 punters on 'land!  Sooner or later they'll be attracted to the thread or just stumble upon it by happenstance.  And everyone loves a tip!

But the thread does need a new name - any of your suggestions or any other  relevant name will do.  The mods would probably need to change it but if it can't be done then 'Spring Carnival Caulfield' might just have to do. 

Speaking of 'Punter to Punter',  I was a real fan of the RRR show back in the day - Tracy Harvey (Tammy?),  Slim Whittle,  Dr Turf,  Con Marasco,  Trevor Marmalade et al were simply great and highly entertaining.

Yep ... with Tracy Harvey on the right.  Con Marasco & Trev Marmalade are probably in the clip somewhere as well.

You got the first leg up in the quaddie I see there Wadda - 5,  4  & 1 was the result.  I picked it in one in a post above! (in order) 

The punters curse - shouda,  couda,  wouda!
