This poll isn't so much about the promising kids as it is about the players who have already got a few seasons into them, have shown a bit (or even a lot), and might just be about to break out to become a genuinely top player in their position.

It's all about a player making the decision "I want to be the best, the absolute best" and backing it up by overcoming their limitations.

After all, you can't go half-Gawn.

While I think jesse will have a huge year next year, I think Jack just has the attitude to become an absolutely elite ball winner.

He will stop at nothing to do so

I know you said not first year but I would not be at all surprised if Clarrie Choo Choo was tussling with Viney as our best mid by end of 2017 season. I reckon what you see from Kent now is about what you will get. Expect Hoges and T-Mac to go another level with another year of strength and conditioning.

Not sure if Viney fits your criteria.

He won the Bluey.

I hesitated to put him in for that reason, but the rationale was that as a midfielder becoming 'top of position' means competing on even terms against the likes of Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Kennedy, Gray and Ablett.

In contrast, McDonald for example just needs to improve some specific weaknesses and he'd sail past Rance.

And Gawn didn't win our best and fairest, but definitely was the best ruckman in the game this year!

Disagree on Kent, I think he has the tools to be elite. This was his first full season where he didn't really have any injury battles or setbacks. Look out next year, I expect he and harmes will be 2 of our massive improves.

The biggest name missing off this list is Angus braysure. Whilst petracca, viney, hogan and Macdonald will all continue to get their plaudits going forward, I've seen enough of Angus to know that if he gets a good run at it next year, he could surprise. I'm not saying he will, but I'm saying if it goes his way, he could be top 5 in our best and fairest and possibly spoken about as highly as wines, hannebury and coniglio after their first 50 games. Yes I'm aware that's a big call.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
