It's that time of the year where we look at every possible trade. Will has announced he is leaving the bulldogs. We have announced that we are looking for a Ruckman. They don't go on trees. He was an AA. Has good VFL for. Flogged Spencer in the VFL Grand Final.

Downsides would be his age. He also has a poor behavioural record from memory. However, if Gawn wereally to get injured I'd prefer having this bloke as a back up

We are looking for a Ruck/Forward not a pure ruckman. Will would be just swapping Footscray for Casey why would he?

I'm surprised there's not a thread for Bootsma.

Nah, we're in the market for a huge bloke.  I might start the 'Ilija Grgic' thread soon.

As there does not seem to be much choice, I would not be averse to Minson.

We do not want another "development" tall.

Minson is an intelligent and experienced ruckman that knows his craft and his limitations. Not ideal but not a stupid choice. He has a bit of aggro and can take a mark around the ground.

I heard Matthew 'Spider' Burton is available.  Has been retired since '03 and is in his mid forties, but Mahoney said we're in the market for a big fella who can rest forward, and I'm sure Burton can do lots of resting up in our forward line.

Possible rookie spot?

I'd much rather Minson than Spencer but given we've already offered a contract to Spencer (who knows why?) I guess we are stuck with him and we don't need 2 back ups with no futures.

Do you want sauce with that?

I wouldn't be against this although his biggest problem is a lack of work rate and impact around the ground.

Outside of that, I'd say he'd be good insurance. Seems I'm alone on that one though.

I'm all for insurance players, but you need to be confident they can actually still play at AFL level, otherwise they are just eating up a valuable spot on the list. Are we that sure Minson can? He did not demonstrate so this year.

In Minson's case he (and/or Spencer) would also be eating up all the ruck minutes at Casey that need to be spent on Mitch King.

I doubt he's leaving the Bulldogs to be a VFL ruckman elsewhere anyway.

Speaking of spiders from around that time, there was an article in yesterday's Gold Coast Bulletin on the misspelt one, Spida Everett and his standout game for Qld veterans against Vic Metro a few days ago. He's still got it, apparently, and might push Burton for the spot.

Not being very supportive there, dear chap?

Have you heard something that makes him a big 'no!'?

I'd MUCH rather pick up Jack Hanneth as a delisted free agent, he is more than capable of stepping up and is about the age where ruckman seem to see the most improvement, mature body able to stand up to AFL footy and such.

Better still - perhaps we should get Colin Sylvia back to assist Gawn with the ruck duties.

We don't need a backup ruckman, we have one, Mahoney said fwd/ruck if we can find one, Hannatth was delisted for a reason, MFC could have easily delisted Spencer but they didn't, that should tell you something

Look at all these options!  You blokes better start the 'Peter 'Spida' Everitt' and 'Colin Sylvia' threads quickly so we can discuss at length why they are good pick ups and how they will slot nicely into our best 22.

Greg Stafford MFC ruck coach still looks in good nick, so if we get desperate

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
