Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

In saying that the above reflects on these clubs as a "destination", you're assuming all else to be basically equal. We don't know who is or was seriously chasing any of these players, how much $$ has been offered by others etc. You can't really use this info in isolation.

The repeated instances of high profile players going to big vic clubs like Hawthorn, Collingwood and Geelong when it's been known that others have tabled big money offers is a better indication of who the destination clubs are. There aren't too many.

This pretty much puts this debate to bed. Good post, RD.

Players changing clubs tend to fall into two categories, those chasing a premiership and those chasing money.  I may be proven wrong but I venture that those looking for a flag are far better performed than those counting their cash. We should be careful about paying over the market for players and wait for the one's looking for success to find us or we find them.

Do they?

Prestia: I want to go to Richmond.

O'Meara: I want to go to Hawthorn.

Marchbank: I want to go to Carlton.

Hibberd: .........

I've already explained about the influence of perception and the difference between having to "lure" a player and having them announce you as their destination, it's the entire point of the discussion and the definition of "destination club".

Your 'logic' is entirely lost IF Hibberd comes to Melbourne. According to you that would include us as a destination club. Probably on a par with Carlton.

We know SFA detail about the discussion around a Hibberd trade, I'd prefer it that way than players or agents do pressers about it before the club has even finished the year.

Players making a song and dance about their preferred destination does not in itself define a 'destination club'. Didn't Beams nominate Brisbane as his destination club?

'Destination club' is such a meh term anyway. All clubs attract players.

Destination clubs most often attract the better players and players are most often happy to play for less dollars. Hawthorn players have already said they are happy to play for less to fit O'Mera in. Geelong players have always played for less to keep talent.

Clubs like us on the other hand have to often pay overs.

Lol righto... So Hibberd has already spoken to MFC, but Prestia, O'Meara and Marchbank need to publicly announce their preferred destinations so that those clubs hear about it...

Righto champ.

Stuie, do you think there has been any background discussions between the clubs, the  players you mentioned and their managers, or do you think they just declared where they want to go?

What made you think we wanted any of these players, was it something the club said or just your instinct? We don't leak, we go after and it would seem, get the player we want, Hibberd will come to us but there is no need to make a song and dance about it. Do you think it would help our negotiations if he did?

We are getting our ducks in a row first and I'm sure if the club are after a big name player they'll let you know, but probably after we sign him up.

What difference does it do if a player nominates a club, take McCarthy for instance, it didn't do him much good this year, did it, he's lost a year's football.

Do you think we should have gone after Prestia at $800k or O'Meara with two dodgy knees, or Marchbank who isn't a superstar, was there any interest shown in Mitchell by the club?

Just relax and wait to see what happens, if Hogan stays he will take a lot of our salary cap so we won't be able to do a lot, if he goes we may go on a spree.

You would argue underwater 'stuie'...seriously mate.

My last words on this.

You Are Wrong 'stuie', Carlton are not a Destination Club...they're picking up SOS's NQR's.

You couldn't miss the point more if you tried.

SOS's "NQR's" (aka top 10 draft picks) are nominating Carlton, not us, that's the definition of a "destination club" champ.

The problem is that 'destination club' can mean whatever you want it to mean. Players have been coming to MFC for quite some time, Clarke, Dawes, Tyson, Lamumba, Melksham, Bugg, Kennedy. Marchbank is no better or worse than those. Does that make us a destination club? I don't know. My sense, when Roos was using that phrase, was that being a destination club meant removing the club reputation as an impediment to trade and turning it into a benefit. So that 'All other things being equal' a player would prefer to be at MFC than another club. Since we in the public never REALLY know the details of any given deal, we will only ever be able to evaluate it as a general feel over some period of time.

No doubt we look better from the outside now than we did 3 years ago. If we are to believe what we are told, and I have no reason not to, the club is stable, profitable, the players are happy and engaged, the list is solid, young and improving. All that remains is a period of sustained success. I am betting that is coming. We must be a more desirable destination than we were 3 years ago, that is a good start.

Saints are one of those clubs linked to every player mentioned as leaving a club.

Note they are listed as losing money again and in the group of biggest receivers of help from AFL.

Yep, we're absolutely higher up the pecking order now than a few year ago. As for definitions etc, we probably got a bit away from the original point I was arguing against which was a poster saying we were now the 3rd highest "destination club" behind Geelong and Hawthorn.

Yep. Nearly landed him but just couldn't get the deal done. His value has gone up since then after having a really good season this year. Will cost a decent pick you'd think, 2nd round? Cash not as big an issue.

Yep, two years in a row I believe. Had a pretty good year in 2016. He had struggled to make the 22, but he played in 20 games this year. A solid season, averaging 21.7 disposals. If we are chasing him again it's probably to replace/upgrade on our fringe players like Bugg and Kennedy, plus the guys leaving this year like Michie and Grimes. He's an upgrade... just.

I reckon we could grab him with a mid range 2nd round pick (this years or next). He could play most of the next 100 games at AFL level and give us the depth to keep the pressure for spots high and young players hungry.

But it's also probably one of our best draft/trade assets and 400+k per year for 3 or so years gone without fixing our needs areas of outside run/skills and tall depth.

I'm just leaning towards saying it's best to trade for needs and back yourself in the draft to find more talent, but if we got him I think I'd understand the logic that we need ready to get solid players to keep the momentum going.

We've been told West Coast's Tom Lamb wants a move back to Victoria. No great interest has been shown in the uncontracted forward. #AFLTrade

A couple of players that take my interest. Tom Lamb has huge talent, but there's a question on his work rate. Possibly a move back home would do him good? Like Josh Watts who's been mentioned, Lamb is a real swin man.

While DVR is someone i'd consider with a rookie pick. Hasn't come on for some reason, but highly rated in U18's with some real pace and a deadly left foot.

Fox sports are reporting Pearce Hanley is on the table. Turns 28 next year, I actually rate him pretty highly. He would cost more than we can afford but his run and carry would be handy

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him.
