Hawthorn and Geelong aside, I reckon the MFC is the next cab off the rank at the moment given its list, the turnaround in its operations and coaching staff, and the rich history that can now be unlocked and enjoyed by this band of brothers. The Bulldogs are clearly well ahead of us in terms of performance, but the narrative to the Dees is sexier.

Convincing quality players and coaches to join the Melbourne Football Club is no longer an issue IMO. It's a good vehicle now.

Not the point. The point is about young players and destination clubs.

Prestia received a godfather offer from Tigers, end of story. 

Marchbank has been dealing with SOS all year and they have a relationship. He is also going to a club with several former team mates, is guaranteed getting a game and will no doubt be on bigger bucks than with GWS. 

O'Meara has had 2 serious injuries. He damaged both Patellas badly and then a Patella tendon. He hasn't played a full game in 2 years. Only a few quarters in a lower competition.

He is a massive risk to any club. 3 clubs pulled out after Medical testing. 

Few clubs could take the risk. The Bombers because they could get him for nothing. The Hawks because they have won 4 flags and are immune to criticism from fans or media. If he fires great if not they will say they tried. For them he could be high risk and high reward. If a bust, so what. They are also getting Tom Mitchell.

We can not be criticised in any of these instances.

I'm not criticising at all, I'm being realistic about the pecking order of destination clubs, and the reality is we're still a long way behind and it's laughable that the poster I was replying to thinks we're 3rd in line behind Geelong and Hawthorn.

i'd still like to see how dorks could get o'meara + mitchell without giving up too much

The clubs who can roll the dice with injuries are the power clubs, with elite foundations, set in stone.

We're not there yet.

We are probably now in top 6 of Melb clubs as a destination club and success will improve that.

In my view for Victorian destination clubs in order  

First Bracket - Hawthorn, Collingwood, Geelong. 

Second Bracket - Essendon (up there with the top bracket a few years ago and will get there again), Richmond, Carlton. 

Third Bracket - Melbourne, Saints, Dogs, North. 

Still think we are a way off, we haven't made finals in past 10 years and have had how many bottom four finishes in that time.....

I reckon players who are moving clubs place likely success at the top of their list what clubs are a destination club. To that end i'd have Dogs in that top group and sainst and Dees in the second.

So you think Suckling would have gone to Carlton ?

There's no way Carlton are more of a destination club than Footscray, or us for that matter. 

We're an MCG club, which also gives us an advantage.
