This loss certainly seems to have sucked all of the positivity about us out of the commentariat.

I've heard a couple of discussions of "who's the best side out of the eight" and "who's the most promising side for 2017". Nobody's talking Melbourne any more. It's St.Kilda, Port or even Carlton; someone mentioned Essendon when they get their suspended players back. The groupthink is that we won't be good enough to make finals in 2017, but we may be a chance in 2018.

Sure, it's only footy talk. But among our peers, the feeling is that we've reverted to type, and if we phone in the effort next Sunday & get smashed, it will just confirm these feelings. We may have achieved our goals this year, but we were never in danger of having over-achieved.

Is everybody OK about that?

These are the same people that had Collingwood &/or Richmond top 4 this year, St Kilda not winning a game last year...Port on the move this year and didn't see the fall of Freo this year or Carlton last year. They thought Adelaide would drop off without Danger. They wouldn't have a clue...

Groupthink doesn't win us any games or give us premiership points next year.

It is the WAY we lost. That is the part we have all seen. 

From the first bounce the MFC went to water when there was something worth fighting for. 

Just the same, we could wasily smash the pussycats now that the pressure is off...

Doesn't worry me in the slightest.

And we might not be good enough to play finals in 2017.  That won't worry me.  When we do make it I want it to be real, not a Richmond like finals participation.

The commentariat is a microcosm of footy supporters in general - only capable of remembering the last thing it saw.  How often do you read on here after a poor loss: "oh woe, we're not going to win another game for the year"? It's the same - this year's premiers always forecast to be next year's premiers and so forth.  It comes as no surprise to me that after one poor game, they've forgotten all the good they've seen.  The analysis for the most part is shallow and tedious to read.

Like you didn't say but implied: who cares what they reckon.  The game is too dynamic and subject to too many forces for the dimwits in our media who report on it.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval.     With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.     REMATCH by Meggs

    The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week.
