Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Melbourne's 2013 season: 2 wins, 20 losses, percentage 54.1%.....   PRIORITY PICK REJECTED

Brisbane's 2016 season: 3 wins, 19 losses, percentage 61.1%.....   PRIORITY PICK ??

We tanked, they didn't.

End of story.

You mean we did what 5-6 other clubs did around that time, that was ruled by the head of the AFL as being acceptable, and in a time where the wider footy public would say comments such as "why would you want to win a meaningless game at the end of the season?"

Yes, exactly. ?

If they get a priority pick I will console myself with the very comforting thought that Essendon have been denied the first pick.

If they do get one, which they surely won't, it would have to be an end of 1st rounder.

I thought of that when I made the comment, Redleg.

Get over it people.

Melbourne's problems, poor performances and bad seasons were the clubs own dong. We all know the club tanked to get draft picks. We had the wrong people steering the ship and created our toxic culture. We never deserved a priority pick. We dug our own hole and the AFL dug us out how we really needed it.

Brisbane are a club in a state where no one watches or gives a toss about footy.  The clubs beyond broke, they can't retain interstate players and their facilities make Junction oval look state or the art

Give em all the picks they can get, still won't help em. Look at the Gold Coast. Given everything and they're still no good.

all this 'we didn't get one so why should they' crap is just more of the usual demonland outrage police and whinging this place is famous for.

Let's not go crazy!

Besides I think people are entitled to feel aggrieved at the AFL if they do give one to the Lions after denying us the pick based on the idea that we weren't that bad. At the end of the day giving a PP is based on struggling on field performance and the Brisbane team this year would probably trounce the Melbourne team from that year!

As you say, giving them a bucketload of picks won't make a bit of difference. Didn't realise their debt had reached $13m.

Can anyone compare MFC with the Lions performance and honestly say the Lions deserve a priority pick ??

Is it the AFL again showing bias against the traditional clubs.

Surely the Lions academy is enough. Let them rebuild and go through a decade without finals action.

Didn't they win three on the trot a dozen or so years ago??

Sheeit how long since we have been successful?? Give me a break!! NO HANDOUTS BRISVEGAS!

The softening up of the public has started already. I heard Barrett (I think) on the radio a few days ago saying Brisbane are now worse than Melbourne were a few years ago.

Couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I also remember when our PP was knocked back that the AFL would only issue one in extreme situations or something, like the death of a player.

Yes they set a silly precedent when they denied our claim, as no team is likely to ever be worse than we were, but precedents only matter to those who care about consistency. The AFL does not.

The AFL will do whatever it takes and if that means screwing the weak Vic clubs they will.  What probability would you put on Essendon having been merged with GC around now if they weren't such a rich club.  Otherwise I doubt if the AFL could have resisted the temptation presented by Essendon's 'problems' of reducing the number of Vic teams and bolstering a QLD team.

Is this the same AFL who granted us the same compensation for Tom Scully that Geelong got for Gary Ablett as well as pick 3 for James Frawley (who most here didn't rate anyway and most in the industry saw as gross overcompensation)?  The same AFL that rid our club of incompetent administrators and football department personnel, paid out their contracts some of which had been recently extended despite the outcome from a tanking investigation still to be handed down, who put in a first class CEO, oversaw the appointment of a vastly improved Board and didn't impose draft penalties despite being found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute?  The same AFL who guaranteed our overdraft and gave our club funds in 2003 to help pay a tax bill (amongst other things) that had been hidden in the bottom draw of a desk when we were one step from insolvency?

Is this the same AFL who has negotiated massive media rights deals that has subsequently provided poorer clubs with enough money to compete?  And you criticise them for not ridding us of Essendon which would most likely put the media rights deal at risk and as a result the survival of poorer clubs through lack of funding. Fancy the AFL wanting to help Brisbane become a competitive team which would do nothing but help the entire competition by giving them a priority pick which would grant them one player and push us from pick 40 something to 40 something plus 1 (assuming Hibbert costs our second round pick).  Gosh, what incompetence.

Yep, we've been screwed, we deserve more because as a club over the last 10+ years we've been such a beacon of competence and success.

You should be careful what you wish for Sue because heaven help us if we got it.

Brisy getting a priority draft pick is o.k ………… Brisy and Gc need all the help they can get, those clubs cannot hang on to young players that come from interstate, players are turning into sooks or/and become greedy. Gc should only have been formed if a Victorian based club re-locates.

Why shouldn't Lions get one, the AFL have given Essendon one this year by giving them pick 1 as reward for cheating.

FFS the compensation is based on a particular draft pick. Where you finish on the ladder determines how valuable that pick is. It's not that hard and its an incorrect argument to bleat about Hawthorn getting pick 17 for Buddy and Melbourne gets pick 3 for Frawley.

Stop it.

Your argument  assumes that I was suggesting that it is the MFC that is in the firing line of the AFL.  I wasn't.

Of all weak Vic clubs that the AFL would want to remove, we are not it.  On the contrary,  I suspect we are fortunately a special case because of the foundation nature and early establishment of our club worldwide and the kudos that gives the AFL, so I'm not surprised that they would help us as they did.   But I  believe that the AFL would be a lot happier with fewer clubs in Victoria and will clobber one or two of the weaker ones when the opportunity arises while doing all it can to protect its valuable assets (ie. a big club like EFC in trouble).

I think it would be fair for the MFC to ask why the Lions would get one and we wouldn't, we won 33 games in the 7 years when we got rejected, Brisbane has won 56 in the last 7 years.

Melbourne and Brisbane have both lost good players like crazy through that period, Brisbane has traded a lot of top end picks for guys like Beams, Christienson ect.

surely the AFL couldn't give them one without pointing out the legitimate differences, and i'm not of the opinion the tanking can be used we were found "not guilty"  and fined and paid our punishments ect, and it was a whole new administration and so on.

I think rejecting Mfc has set a precedent that will make this really tough for them.

Yes, I believe that the AFL would love to have fewer clubs in Victoria. One thing stopping them is that they don't want to reduce the number of clubs overall. So that means relocation, or killing clubs and starting new ones ... where exactly?

Another thing stopping them is that there would be a hell of an outcry, which isn't Gil's thing. The AFL doesn't do bad news. Only good news.

But one day ...

I think first cab off the rank, when it comes down to it, will be North going to Tassie by stealth. It's already started.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
