Remember that Melbourne across ten years of misery gained only two priority picks in total. Pick 1 and Pick 17 - Tom Scully and Sam Blease.

And let's be honest, you could've thrown in Dustin Martin and Nic Naitanui and we still would've been a basket case.

And they can moan about not having any top picks out there all they like - the reason is they used them to trade in Dayne Beams, Allen Christensen, Ryan Bastinac, Brendan Fevola and Travis Johnston. They all have a huge collection of early-second-round picks out there. (Coincidentally, another sample in my argument for trying to go 'high-low' in drafts)

Of course, they've had some injury problems this season which make it look even worse than it is, but right now at a club level you could give Brisbane the first four picks in the draft and it would only put a gauze over the gaping stomach wound.

My position always was the AFL, in rejecting our application, set a precedent and it is incumbent upon them if they are to maintain a grain of integrity, to follow that precedent and continue to reject PP applications until confronted with a situation worse than the one we faced two and three years ago,

And they got a whole bunch of Academy players quite cheaply in the last few years (and will get more this year).  In 2014 under the old system they got three highly rated players with their ordinary late picks.  Don't know what they have done with them all. 

To worsen their problems after the mass youth exodus they put in a rookie senior coach - not a good idea especially when the club is a basket case. 

The AFL said last week they are tipping in a few mill to help them play their full cap and get better facilities.  And will get more (extra) for debt next year as part of new TV Rights.

You can give them the top 10 picks in the draft and it won't make a difference if they can't retain them, it's well known their training facilities are well below par, their coach is imo not up to it, they have made irresponsible recruiting decisions over the past 3-5 years

I can't think of a single young player they've had/have that's been well developed, even Taylor and Mayes have stalled or gone backwards.

much like with us i think they need the AFL's help to secure a capable coach who can help change the culture of the club, Roos would be the first choice, but unlikely, so perhaps someone like Bomber Thompson, teach the young guys, and develop them and see if they can sort out the facilities.

Well spotted Mickey. That's exactly how I read it.

I don't necessarily think they are a lock for a priority pick. But if they do request one, I honestly believe we should show an immediate response that matches theirs from a few years back, where they led the "no way" chorus, to protect their own early picks. How did the argument go back then? Something like, "Melbourne created their own mess through mismanagement, let them fix it themselves"

• Get a good coach, CEO and head recruiter/list manager. 
• AFL to tip money into training and club facilities. 
• Build a culture.

All of these are a MUST before a PP. One player will make small difference.

We did it, albeit with the help of the AFL.

Having said that, our first pick this year will be around 25 (pending player trades), so if Essendon miss out on pick one and Brisbane get one and three, I for one will let out a hearty laugh!

I couldn't care less if they get a PP. We aren't in the first round. It isn't going to affect us all that much. We will probably offload our second rounder anyway. Good on Brissy if they get a PP. However, I would argue that Brisbane aren't in their current position due to a lack of talent - but more so retaining the quality talent they did have. I am not sure a priority pick is going to solve any long term issues. They have had guys like Yeo, Docherty and Polec leave the club. That probably suggests there are some broader issues they need to get right. Much like us prior to PJ.

Agreed - I wouldn't be against a PP but I don't think it will really help. They've already got their academies, they just need to wait for those kids to come through. If the AFL want to help they can start by funding their training facilities/HQ and getting a competent CEO. Leigh Matthews should be removed from making FD decisions also.
