Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

One thing nobody seems to have mentioned is the high hit on the Weed from Rioli.  Weed was bent over to pick up the ball and Rioli came in from directly in front and nailed him.  Weed was stunned and would up tackled and the Hawk supporters were screaming for a Holding the ball call.

Incidentally, why were there so many Hawks in the Melbourne Members area?  There were dudes at the gate checking memberships, but apparently they didn't feel any need to actually keep people out.

This was a Hawthorn member access game apparently which might explain it. That's what the hawks fans were saying during the  week.

On the Rioli bump. At the ground there was a replay that showed him getting Oliver on the chin. Clearly head contact.

I thought Rioli "should be" gorn based on that, of course always bearing in mind the chook lotto nature of the MRP. And that he's Cyril, therefore it was the best front on bump of the season and no-one can bump front on like Cyril, etc.

But haven't seen that angle since. All the other replays have been from behind Oliver and it's not clear from that angle.

So, lucky Cyril. I'm alright with him getting off on that one, it's a contact sport after all. Gotta accept some roughing up. But spear tackles and whacks behind play? The AFL have lost control of their game. Maybe they think it's ice hockey.

Haven't had any time to post my thoughts on the game, and still don't really. So i i'd thought i post some random thoughts:

Random thought 1:

I don't really hate any other side and truth be known i admire the Hawks as a club and team. However i hate losing to them and hate how smug their supporters are (some wally near me kept yelling patronising comments like 'keep up the effort dees and you're a chance of playing finals next year'). I also hate how until the last couple of years the Hawks have bullied us and smashed up our young players, particularly during the brief Neeld period.

If someone had asked me at the start of the year which game i would most like us to win this would have been it. A dry day in perfect conditions at the G with a chance to hurt the hawks chances of finishing top 2 which if they don't will likely mean playing their first final interstate against Sydney, GWS or Crows.

Just in regard to your first comment re smug supporters, Hawthorn unlike other Clubs, when I was younger would require some thought if commenting on them loudly during a football match. The things they didn't like was a misspelt understanding of their unfortunate Club name, used in the correct context of course. However it had to be smart. Like: Gee I would never take my wife down to a club beginning with that name. or  the only pie worth eating at that clubs home ground is a mud pie and they are free, all you have to do is wallow around. They always used to throw up the class card, and I couldn't understand why...

How Mitchell that dirty snipping dog keeps getting off is beyond me. Hits a player who is lying on the ground, in the head, while the ball is elsewhere. No sanction. WTF?!

The only good thing here is that we need North to keep losing, so a full strength Hawthorn this week will only help that situation.

This bugs me. They are not allowed to be within 5m of the player on the mark UNTIL the ump has blown his whistle and called play on. The umps get it wrong constantly

The rule conveniently does not include the space BEHIND the man on the mark.

What they're doing (and they did it all arvo) is obviously against the spirit of the laws. But is permitted.

Having another look at the Mitchell incident, I don't think it deserves a week, pretty minor. Rioli will also have no case to answer. Sicily however, probably deserves a week for his crude spoiling of Bernies good looks.

Glad to see some are seeing things as they are leaco. And great to see the week on Sicily , definitely deserved that

That doesn't really make sense. They can't stand in front or the side. And the ump shoos them away if they are behind the man on the mark.

Its when the player has taken up some time, say 15secs and everyone expects the ump to say play-on - they let the Hawk player sidle up to the man on the mark. It's infuriating.

No free kick paid for the incident and  Weiderman's was missed by the on the spot umpire as well.

Meanwhile they had no difficulty in paying the Hawks forward frees or a 50 metre penalty that was dodgy and also resulted in a goal for the Hawks.

IMO credibility completely shot and after this surely shouldn't get Hawks in the finals.

Too much at stake.

The crowd was down because there were no trains on the Glen Waverley line or the Glenferrie line due to level crossing works. There were also no trams along the Riversdale rd route . Buses replaced all of those.

The bump was a bump, and while I still feel it was a free kick I don't think it deserved weeks. Interestingly (and it shows the blinded love of Rioli) I thought that tackle he did later in the game on I think Oliver again was worse. Lifted his leg as he tackled upwards, that's the action where all of a sudden both tackler and tacklee have no control, can be very dangerous. But of course commentators just gush over anything he does.

Just as a side note can I mention that I think Dwayne Russell is one of the worst commentators to listen to, particularly in this game because every time Hawthorn got the ball his tone basically sounded as if "oh here they go, this is it, this is where they put Melbourne to the sword". Even when we were basically home and hosed!

And quick question, what was the spread of fans with it being just under 39,000? Everyone talks about the Hawks dominant supporter numbers but that seems quite down, I would've expected at least above 40K.

I thought the bump was fine after watching the replay, maybe a free for taking a player out without control of the ball? Not worth weeks though

the tackle on the other hand was extremely dangerous, the NRL are all over this kind of tackle and it be worth weeks without a doubt. Someone will get seriously hurt one day, similar to head being sacrosanct, if they don't stamp it out

Are there still people who think we haven't improved? Where did they go?

Would we be the only side outside of the 8 that hasn't lost a game by 10+ goals?

We've essentially been in every game in the last quarter bar perhaps Sydney.

Correct.

Number of 60+ point losses:

  • St Kilda - 2
  • Port - 2
  • Melbourne - 0
  • Collingwood - 3
  • Richmond - 4
  • Gold Coast - 5
  • Carlton - 5
  • Fremantle - 2
  • Brisbane - 9
  • Essendon - 9

Indeed, we've only lost one game by more than 50 (Sydney) and a second game by over 40 (Port Adelaide).

Our average losing margin is 27.1, 7th best in the league - the 11 teams worse than us average 30+ point losses, including Hawthorn, West Coast, St Kilda and Port Adelaide.

Certainly not disputing some of the poor decisions such as the 2nd fifty where our man ran past a split second after the mark and still got pinged. The high decision against the Cyril duck which should have been play on or holding the ball.

Can't recall the Weid one Dockett. Oh wait you mean the too high/around the neck one in forward pocket Punt Rd end yes? Then there was the Vince coat hanger.

All these overlooked or poor decisions are typical for a Hawthorn match though. They are the the most protected 'Vic' club outside of the Etihad home clubs when playing them at Etihad (except against each other of course). You have to be having a 4 to 5 goal better game than your opponent to have any chance of winning these ones. Same thing when playing interstate. I guess interstate clubs say the same when they come over to play the bigger Vic clubs.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
