Agreed, it would have been harder, but those other backs you previously mentioned didn't seem to crumble like he did, under the same strain.

I think Burchall lost some of his mojo the last couple of years, but yes, Duryea is the weakest link, albeit a good one.

The likelihood is that Jetta plays, it's just my hope that he becomes redundant sooner rather than later. 

I reckon Jetta spent plenty of time on key forwards this year with the zone set up, but i see your point, even having this conversation is a great sign of how far the club has come.

I would agree that any player who has had 12 months out of the game will either be (i) bursting with energy and enthusiasm or (ii) jaded and be slow to get out of the blocks.   To name such as a lock in best 22 seems premature.

How about at least having a look at training and preseason (can't remember with all the annual changes, is it still Ansett Cup??) form. 

Still I guess it is all a bit of fun at this stage.   

Could even speculate on the hidden gem we pick up at pick 57 or whatever debuting and getting BOG and rising star.

I think this topic this year is going to be great all the way through to the clash in late March with St Kilda because no matter how good a judge we think we are, or how much inside info we have, this year we have depth in almost every area (except a mobile ruckman/forward) and there are about 30 players who most of us would be very comfortable getting a game Rd 1, yet there are only 22 spots.

As to who gets the final spot, it is so variable and will depend so much on fitness, form and Goody and his assistant coaches special preferences.

I mean who would have honestly tipped last year that our vice captain of 2015 would be so out of favour because he turned up with a bit of extra puppy fat pre-season. We all knew that Lynden Dunn lacked pace, but we all thought that his other good points (thumping kick/great tunneler and experience) would make him a starter and we were all wrong.

As a result I am a bit worried that Bernie may become the "too old, not fast enough" scapegoat, but he showed in his second year at the Dees that even without a proper pre-season he was up for a scrap and it wouldn't surprise me if he emerged as a very dangerous high half-forward goal scorer.

My only hope is that our selectors err a bit towards the older guys for the first couple of weeks as I always like it when in line-ball decisions we show respect before hope.

As our friend Ron would say.......I rate Wagner and Smith is developing nicely. Can't see Jetta losing his spot in 2017 except for a sudden drop off in form or injury.

Fully agree on Garlett. When he is on song he is terrific and adds that X factor but just goes missing too often. I think 2017 will determine his future.

I think anyone predicts a best 22 in November on the basis of "all things considered".

The only reason Bernie's position would be in danger is if he continues to turn the ball over under little pressure. For a senior player, that's not good enough. He's not playing in the guts as much, so there's really no excuse for those turnovers.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who believes we're short on KPB depth.

If T-Mac goes down, we have Frost and O-Mac. They barely clock 50 games put together and still look like deer in headlights at times.

I wanted an older and more experienced KD in the off-season and I'm still hoping we draft/rookie one.

We've got Garlo with 160 odd games and also Peds who's been around a long time. There not the best coverage going around but the reality is we've just let our most experienced KPD go because he couldn't get a game.

I think we need KPD depth but for mine it doesn't necessarily have to be older and experienced.

He was standing under the giant red cedar at Three Ways with his thumb out and so I slowed and wound down the passenger window and said g'day mate throw your surfboard in the back with mine and you and your dog jump in. Okay Goody I am seeing it like this Frosty way down back on his own with a simple role that if it gets to him then take no prisoners. I believe Jetta will get better.

I can see him changing roles to more of a defensive forward and actually being good at it.

He is a better run with player than Bugg.

I wonder if Weid will be seen as best 22 just yet or if the club feels he needs a bit more time to play regular senior footy. 

I think he's capable of contributing but we don't want to burn him out so i'd be surprised if he plays more than 60% of the games next year, unless his form is outstanding. 

Alex Neal-Bullen is going to have to change something to get a run in my opinion, he's behind a large group of quality young mids who are only going to get better and doesn't seem to offer any real x-factor. 

perhaps he needs to try and re-invent himself in a new position, though i wonder if he has the tools as a player to play many roles, not sure he's skillful enough to play off half back, so maybe defensive forward.

Jeffy needs to get back to his best or he will find himself fighting for his spot, i thought last year he had a bit of a form slump, and he stopped getting the goals out the back, which to mean was an indication his work rate dropped off slightly, perhaps he was carrying an injury, but if he can get back to his best and Watts and Hogan get better again we'll be in a great place to make finals next year. 

Frost is one i think needs to improve to hold his place, he is fortunate though we don't have a lot putting pressure on as the third defender, with Dunn off to the filth and Garland seemingly out of form totally with some luck Garlo can hit back strongly and we'll be a better side for it, if not i'd be open to playing Jetta as an undersized third defender and having an extra attacking option down back.

Vince is interesting because he's getting a bit older, i think he will still do stints through the midfield but may also spend a good amount of time off half back, despite averaging 26 disposals this year i am not sure he was nearly as damaging as when he won the bluey, would be very handy if he found his best form in 2017

 really think Brayshaw and Salem are ready to have break out years, both have obvious talent but last year just coiuldn't get a run at it, when they did play they showed some great signs, especially at the back end of the season, with any luck they'll complete a full pre season and both will make big strides in 2017

Agree about Neal-Bullen. Just does not seem to have one trait that shows as above average. Maybe there is a role for a bloke who can run the length of the ground all day, but I can't figure out what that might be.

 I LOVED what I saw from Frost late in the season, when he was not asked to play deep forward. He has every tool except the elite footy brain, and seems to run himself into trouble at times. Not sure how to fix this, but hopefully more experience will teach him how to take the correct option first time.

I'm not quite as sold on Salem as some, but he was very impressive in his last game (From memory) Simply needs to find a way to get his hands on the ball more often. Also don't think he is a shutdown defender, at least not yet. That's why players like Jetta are so important in my eyes. Also Hibberd. He is what I hope Salem will become. Hard, can shut his man down, pinpoint disposal, and gets the ball heaps.

Smith just did some things in a couple of games that made you think wow, this guy has pace to burn, good disposal and courage.  He looked like Howe, but with speed and better contested ball-winning ability.

Hearing how highly rated he is at the club rounds out the picture.  It means jack if an amateur like me likes a player, but you get excited if the club is excited.

I know nothing of Maynard.

I see Trenners as gone at end of season. Just so so slow, and showing zero signs of improvement. Such a shame, as his hands are fantastic.

Trenners will be very interesting to watch, i really think he is good enough to make it as a good role player, but this pre season will decide that, he needs to come back in ripping shape and move freely, his lack of speed/power is a concern especially in the modern game but slow players can still be good players i believe so time will tell. 

I am super excited by Smith, i watched him play three times this year and every time he really caught my eye, not so much for rackin the ball up, but just things he did that just really made you take notice, i reckon ProDee might agree with me here, but he's very strong in the air, but also has real speed and the combination of the two is what most excites me, plus he's very hard at it.
