Best 22 for Round 1, 2017

This is what any number of my Carlton supporting colleagues and students have told me. I don't totally agree. I reckon he is the player our big forwards need to clean up the crumbs. He presents a real dilemma for defenders. If he tightens up the pressure when we lose the ball his value to the team skyrockets. That creates many more scoring opportunities for himself and his team mates.

It's great to be able to read through a thread like this and not see it full of new draftees that we'll all be placing unrealistic expectations on over the summer, only to see them swamped and bashed in round one.  When was the last time we had zero debutants in round one..?

 

(Got bored an then answered my own question... this could be the first time we haven't had a first gamer in a round one side since Round One 2007!)

Ozy…………. Interesting to see T.SMITH at F.F,he would have to be slightly in front of the Weed. I can see Hannan playing rd 1,Garlett may struggle to get a game.

I've left out Clarry which seems very silly, but I just wonder whether he'll be a better player with more time at Casey developing his tank and made to earn his spot. In time he'll be our best midfielder but the way the game is going especially early in the season teams are super fit and it's hard to carry guys who are underdone and don't have a lot of positional flexibility. He can be good forward, but he's even better on ball.

Harmes and Brayshaw could be our best forward tacklers and can start forward and go through the midfield and the wings. Vince and Melksham can go through half back and wings/on ball. Lewis can obviously move on ball, as can Vince.

I want the extra goal kicker and proper forward so Hannan comes in. Garlett misses out for the pressure guys listed above due to their flexibility. I want the extra running defender so Frost misses out and Hibberd plays as the 3rd tall and hopefully the zone defending provides cover.

Weideman gets the nod over Pedersen because I think he'll be fitter for the start of the season.

A lot of my best 22 is based upon Goodwin ramping up the game plan with zone defending and fast ball movement. Plus also trying to copy the Dogs model of multiple positional changes. If we want a more traditional game plan I'd go with Frost down back, Garlett in a forward pocket and Oliver rotating from the bench to the midfield.

After Hogan (1.95), and Watts (1.73) Garlett was our third heaviest scorer (1.71). 

Took 4th most marks inside 50 after Watts, Gawn and Pedo...

Kicked 2 or more goals in 11 or his 17 games...

Jeff is one of my favourite players but his worst would find him at Casey most weeks while his best would see him near the All Australian squad. That is probably why there is such a divergence of opinions on him on here.

I'd have thought that filter if applied to the rest of the team, would also rule out half the team...

Garlett lacks the physicality of the very good defensive forward. Granted he's light which allows him to be more agile but I would prefer someone who can lay a bone-jarring tackle when required other than just kick goals.

The only thing holding him back at the moment seems to be the mystery illness.

Probably silly. But there's 22 games in a season and I'm a big believer in picking a very fit side for round 1. So often in recent years (at least before the Roos times) we'd pick a side for round 1 and then drop 3 guys and bring in 3 runners for round 2! He'll probably play his was in to the round 1 in the preseason side just as he did this year and unfortunately there's always injuries. I hope he's healthy to run the post Christmas time trial, because obviously if he's running up to scratch he's an automatic inclusion.

His 2015 output wasn't far off the mark. He averaged 4.1 tackles per game. By way of comparison, this season Devon Smith averaged 4.7.  Puopolo averaged 4.6. If he can match his 2015 output I think that's acceptable.

Garlett needs to maintain consistency to retain his spot, but there should be a level of acceptance that he's the cream on top of the cake. He's the one who can pull a much needed goal out of nowhere.

As others have mentioned, Jeffy doesn't have the margin for error next year like he did in 2015 or to a degree this season - although I get your point regards "the cream on top."

He just seems that much more frustrating to me when he's having an off game.

I'd play him round 1 but not playing him isnt that silly. Playing a similar number of games as he did this year is probably enough. We have the depth of midfield tallent to rotate the side a bit. Whether or not he plays round 1 is of little consequence to is development. He is best 22 on potential no doubt, but Im not sure he is on output at this stage (at least consistently). He will play throughout the year but I would hope is is managed again. 2018 we can talk about him being a lock, then we say its silly to leave him out.

Given he got 2 Brownlow votes in the first game this year and that he is best 22 not on potential (my view)...I think we were a lesser team without him in it in 2016.

...and I don't think he will learn the lessons he needs to learn now at Casey. He now needs to learn his craft with the big boys, he's streets ahead of his VFL opposition.

Giving him a rest when needed of course is not silly.

Jeff Garlett is a classy finisher.

i think he might improve with age like Eddy Betts.

He has blistering speed- he sticks tackle and his shots are not often wasteful.

His accuracy will improve.

I don't underestimate him although he throws in the odd quiet game.

I agree wholeheartedly.  If Smith can do what I expect in the pre season games, he will give our forward line that grunt it is calling out for and be CHF in round 1.  He is the most likely person on our rookie list to be upgraded for H.  Weiderman will be a star but still needs time to develop.  All the other selections are as everyone else has picked - it just depends on which 6 you leave out for form and injury reasons. and balance.
