To put all this into perspective, I told Weed that everybody thought he was too skinny at the moment, he found it hilarious, early 90kgs and your'e skinny, I am sure if he gets a run up and gets his knee into the back of Gibson's head it will be Gibson who falls over

for a bloke 196...90kgs isnt much.  Maybe you dont get that Saty..maybe

He needs another 10 on him

Correct.

He needs a stone plus of muscle.  It's quite a lot and will make a big difference to his performance.

Although, - there is this quote from him on the AFL website:

"The weights coach is putting a lot of work into me," Weideman said.

"I still have a pretty skinny frame at the moment unfortunately and I will put in the hard yards, especially over the next few pre-seasons, and hopefully fill into my body and see where it takes me."

Yeah, but Saty rubbed Weideman's arms and told him everyone thought he was too skinny and he laughed, so, you know... that quote never happened.

I'm going the pre-emptive write off just to be cautious. Too thin too inexperienced too strong a connection to the filth. Not enough skills at ground level, poor peripheral vision. One of those will be right. I'm off to golf !!!

Okay, I may have gone off half cocked with this prediction. Or perhaps I should make such calls on all our debutants.

With more fitness and more muscle on his frame he is going to be a ripper. He really goes for the ball in the air and brings his team mates into the game at ground level. He's got a solid kicking action too. Talk about a memorable debut!

You really couldn't have asked for a better first game for a skinny inexperienced forward against the top side with a backline that has 150 games experience average.

Clearly showed he has what it is going to take.

it's all about fitness now. He was cooked at half-time and because of his lack of muscle, he shied away from a few contests. Can't wait to see what he can do as his body grows.

It might take years to get his body to peak playing size.  Slow burner for mine, we're 5 years off seeing his best. It'll be worth the wait if today's start is any indication.  Awesome stuff.

See his best in 5 years - yes.

However he showed today we're going to be treated to a lot of very good football in the meantime.

I'd rather get his tank and mobility up first and worry about much of the bulk later. Just build him up enough to try and prevent injuries and give him core strength. Any more and he'll slow down like Tom Boyd.

This isn't meant to negative but let's be realistic:
1. He's not going to be great at ground level.
2. He's not going to be able to out body opponents to take easy marks.
3. If he gets the ball in traffic the speed of the game might mean his skills by hand or foot aren't great.
4. His defensive effort probably isn't going to be fantastic.
5. Every chance is the pressure of the game means any set shots he gets will be hard to finish

6. But what I will look forward and am excited about is his reading of the play and leading patters and his ability to contest in the air when given a run and jump at the ball - which might only happen once or twice in the game. If he can get up on the lead and have a jump at a few high balls he could end up with 4 or 5 marks and maybe slot a goal or two. Add in a few more possessions from general play and it will be a nice debut. All the best Sam.

1. Wrong - he was solid
2. True enough
3. Wrong - his handballs were great
4. That was true, struggled in the 2nd half
5. Super wrong - nailed both shots

6. Right!!!

Congratulations Sam - hope its a memorable game for all the right reasons.

My husband is extremely dirty he is in the red and blue. Thinks he has black and white pumping through his veins.

Boy does he need a transfusion!

So happy for the Weed.  He couldn't have asked for a better start to his career.  Got a really good pass for his first goal early on to boost his confidence and showed really good awareness with his handpassing up the ground.  Plus he may be the only player in the AFL to have scored a goal with every kick of his career!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
