Jack Trengove I mean.  We are all wrapt to see that he has made a successful comeback & we all wish him well because he is a great bloke & fantastic club man however on the basis of 2 games back is there a spot for him on the list next year ?

He still looks pretty slow and if he's only going to pick up 20 odd touches a week he is going to struggle.  Remember Brayshaw, Salem & probably HL and ANB will come into the team at some stage.  He looks too slow to play in defence or up forward

Do you really think they'd put all of this time and effort in and then cut him?

And 'only' 20 touches a week? Come on. Is that really a problem?

What I've seen so far is consistency, effort and fairly solid output.

2 years or so out of the game ...3 games back & what you expect him to be at the top of his game...he has truckloads of improvement in him & is performing adequately enough....that is the nucleus of our team ....heaps of improvement to come for the majority of our players so how about you temper your expectations slightly

Different kind of slow. Tyson's slow is in the head and can be fixed. Trenners slow is in the legs.. that is near impossible to fix. A spot next year? 100% yes they wouldnt cut him now, but he has alot of work to do to earn a spot in the best 22.

his actions and effort have been good without doubt! but the consern comes in what he simple cant improve and that is that he is slower than a turtle on sleeping pills. I said in another thread that if he can play for the cheap ones out the back like a Sam Mitchell he has a chance but right now he isnt playing like that.

Last pre-season would have just been about re-building him and getting back, this one can be about building a bit of strength and power.  

I don't think he's ever going to be that long-striding, smooth-moving wingman we saw in 2010, but he's earned the right at another year on the list.

He's an extremely popular clubman and when we get to a point where a bloke who finds it 20 times, makes good decisions, and is a neat disposer, is 25th-30th on our list then we'll be in good shape.

I think the problem is that some people placed too high expectations on Jack... It is a great story that he is back after an injury that should have ended his career. He is still only 2 games back and working into a solid block of games.. Before injury he was playing okay footy, but not dominating. There were a few people on here that suggested he could be a 'Robbie Gray' type story, which I think is a bit unfair on Jack.

Is there a spot for Jack? Yes there is.. Will there be a spot for him long term? Depends on the progress of Harmes, Salem, ANB, Stretch, VB, Oliver, etc..

I would say for now he deserves the spot and is playing some good footy, but long term we cannot carry too many slow mids, so it is between him, Tyson, Vince & Nate Jones for that spot.

He is adjusting to the pace of AFL (after a long time out). I think he is doing a reasonable job.

I think he has been pretty good in his 3 games so far, two of which were very tough conditions in the wet.

In saying that, I was hoping for a little more spring in his step so to speak.

Let's see how he is tracking 3 or 4 games after the bye.

This is a really uneducated comment. Tyson is slow in the legs (he's most definitely not slow in the head), he's probably our slowest across the ground. He is a very strong and smart footballer, didn't have a good one on the weekend when I thought conditions would suit. He had a ripper against the Hawks in the wet, not so good on the weekend

I'm not going to buy into the Trengove witch hunt...

He can take 5m long smooth strides all he wants, doesnt change the fact that most AFL wingman can run 30m in the time he runs 15. He will be at the club next year i don't think thats in doubt, but i think he will have a grimes type year. Good games in the 2's without getting in the senior side.

I'd offer him two years at the end of this year- he's done everything asked of him and if we don't offer it, someone else will.

He's rebuilt his body, consistently dominated vfl level after two years out, does the 1 percenters, tackles fiercely.

He's best 22 imho.  At worst, he's our best depth midfielder.

Would like to have all our mids in a race, there is no real speed in any of them line up Trengove, Jones, Oliver, Brayshaw, Vince, Tyson, Viney, ANB, Vandenberg, Mitchie and the rest of them there wouldn't be much difference over 30m, Viney would win.

Trengove is OK 3 games getting the tempo yesterday he had 22 mates that look slow.

His strength like most our mids is his contested ball, his marking and his running capacity.

Tyson is no speedster but he is fast enough to compete, he gets caught because he is just a little slow to move the ball on. I think that is because he doesnt want to turn it over. When I said slow in the head I meant he spends too long thinking about where to kick/hand it off to. I agree he is a smart footballer. So far this year he has been getting better and better.

I dont think it is a witch hunt. He has not been bad. But i think we are seeing the conserns that many of us had even before he got back in the side. He has upside but needs to be more damaging with the ball in hand before he outweighs his negatives. If he is getting in space and having alot of scoring involvements, high meters gained and some inside 50s then he is in the side. Because thats the player we need. If he is in and under getting handballs out im sorry but we have that type player by the truckload and his weaknesses will push him out of the side.

Good point. I did mention his lack of speed previously but it is way too early to judge his future. And 20 touches a game would be pretty good.

The best comparison for Trengove has always been Bartel. Never fast, but usually gets to the right places at the right times and does the right thing when he gets there. That's always been Trengove's best attribute.

The thing about Bartel (and Mitchell and Watson and a number of others) is that they're rarely put in a situation where their lack of pace can be exploited. We don't seem to be that well-organized at this stage.

I wish I was as optimistic as some on here. He looks a step off the pace to me. I'd say his leg speed looks to be on par with where he was before his time out. 

He deserves some time, but it is a slight concern for me where he fits in to our game style moving forward.

give him an entire pre-season without any further hiccups and it will do wonders for him. He is coming from a very long way back, so give him time to adjust back to AFL level.

There are plenty who i would cut before Trenners, so this is probably a discussion topic that should be brought up at the end of next year.

The thing about Jack is, everyone in our bloody team is a terrible kick.  I still remember going to the first training session Jack attended.  We had the four new draftees off to one side doing short passes (20-30m) to each other.  When the other kids passed the ball, their target had to move to one side, or forward or back, to mark it.  When Jack kicked it, they never had to move their feet.  Every pass was dead centre of the chest.  There are plenty of players around the league who are short on outright leg speed yet still considered to be A grade stars.  They all have quality disposal, good game sense and a high workrate. Jack has all of these in spades.  Given how desperate we are for quality ball-use, especially when moving into our forward 50, I don't see how we can afford not to have Jack in the side.

We need to talk about Jack? What's there to tak about? On form he's in the top dozen players at the club and will only improve as he gets fitter and picks up the speed of AFL level more. Anyone who thinks he should be dropped or delisted must not watch football.

Have I missed something or has he only played three games (two in heavy rain) since coming back from being out for two years? I sometimes think posters on here enjoy seeing our players fail.
