Just FYI... in case you were expecting to see sunshine on your TV this Sunday... potentially 50mm of rain over two days - this one could be a very ugly game to watch...

Probably won't be as bad as Metricon several weeks back - but I think this makes a big difference as to what contest this will see. I hope we have learnt something from the Hawks game, because the Bloods will play the wet pretty well I reckon!

Could probably name 15 of our 22 from Monday who love a slog. I'm betting bugg, Kennedy, Tyson, hogan, Dawes, gawn, jetta, Oliver,  kent, trengove, Vandenberg and petracca all love the contested scrap this will turn out to be.

And I'll mention your boy watts who was very impressive in our last hitout in the wet. Optimistic about our hopes on sunday

In those conditions I can't believe we are going in so tall.  Mc x 2 and Frost back, Hoges, Dawes and Watts forward as well as Max.

As i said before the Hawks game one of the biggest myths in footy is that wet weather brings a more skilled team and less skilled team closer together due to the difficulty in handling the ball.

The opposite is true - the more skilled the player the more likely they are to be able to mitigate against the impact of rain. We saw exactly that against the Hawks with players like Watts, Rioli, Vince and Gunston handling the ball beautifully. Further rain exacerbates skill errors from the less skilled.

That said rain does make it much harder to mark the ball which should help our chances stopping buddy (though he is amazing on the ground) but equally make Hogan's and Dawes jobs harder.

I expect that we would have had to have learnt a lesson against the Hawks that we need to kick it forward at all costs and limit the number of  slick handballs. 

Tough game but it we will have some show if we bring our best competitiveness to the table. Hard to beat the Swan in those stakes though.

Im not convinced swans play that well in the wet

They are used to it but plyers like heeney and franklin prefer the dry, Our onballers you mention will do well in the wet

The two games they played this year in the wet, are the two games they have been most vulnerable. Gold Coast and Brisbane. 

I agree, I have watched them a few times this year and some of the so called contested kings they have, have not looked anywhere near as willing to get their hands dirty in a few games. Obviously they are a class team, but Richmond, GWS, Brisbane, severely depleted gcs and adelaide have all shown they can be beaten in the midfield if you contest hard enough.

The Swans mids play a similar game style to ours not surprising given the Roos connection....they like to flick the ball around and find space. It's a harder game style to play in wet weather for obvious reasons.

The game will be won by the team that adapts quickest to the conditions. Our inexperience may cost us here.

I don't think we're too tall but do worry about Dawes, probably our least skilled player. As 'binman' said earlier it's the skilled player that excels in the wet, my proviso is so long as they have an appetite for the contest and are prepared to keep their feet.

You can bank on Tyson in these conditions.

Whilst I agree with you saying the team who adapts quickest wins, do you think it is easier for a team who is experienced playing 1 style to change quicker, or a less experienced side who isn't as mechanical to change it up? 

On the Hawthorn visit, I'd have thought we were definitely out-smarted in the wet. It was obvious how we were outsmarted even though we played harder and contested much better. But we didn't adapt our style of play to the conditions, even though a slick Hawthorn team changed their usual possession off style to beat us.

I'm sure we learnt a lot more out of that game than we have let on thus far. If it's as wet as the Hawthorn game, I'd bank on an even smarter Melbourne performance. That doesn't guarantee a win, but we are definitely a learning team

The Hawks did noticeably well out of those 'random' kicks forward off the ground. Hoping that's one of the learnings (and that 'random' actually becomes/means 'intended')
