Who are the Dees chasing for 2017 and at what cost?

It has. But I don't think Melksham alone is the missing piece to finals.

So how the land lies at the moment is the following.

We don't have a first round pick. Our second round pick looks somewhere around the 27-30 mark. Our 3rd round pick looks late 40's.

Don't be surprised if Brisbane request a priority too.

So while Essendon are arrogant enough to think they can dig their heels in, they will likely end up parting ways for a third round pick, maybe with a sweetener attached.

Some rumors around that Hurely will also head in our direction. This will be a tricky one. We'd need to part ways with the likes of TMac or a gun young mid like Salem or Brayshaw to make something like that happen I would imagine. Maybe with our first pick too.

There are many blokes on our list who lack currency.

Dunn is contracted for another year and wouldnt hold much for many clubs unless a Brisbane or Gold Coast wanted a tall back for a year or two. That being said we are increasingly short down back so having him on our list as an insurance policy for a final year won't surprise.

Garland I believe has another two years to run.after we locked him in for three years post free agency. He is not in favor at all and has been found out with a lack of speed. He too is somewhat of an insurance policy when it comes to a backup player who can man a tall but he doesn't come into many calculations going forward.

Lamumba I think would be a blessing in disguise if he was to pull up stumps due to his issues surrounding concussion and grieving over Ali.

Terlich, Michie and Max King look in strife. As does Newton. We probably cant afford to hook them all so Newton might be lucky to hold on.

I'd be palming Dawes off to another club for an old pair of boots, if not on the scrap heap for mine. He too could serve a club like Essendon or Brisbane but not us.

Grimes and Trengove unfortunately just don't seem to be part of our future. JT is out of contract from memory. Don't mind if we re-rookie him as hopefully there is a small element of romance left in football but Grimes is a cooked goose unfortunately. He is playing seriously good football down at Casey so any trade would serve us well during trade week.

Fact of the matter in, we are not going to land anyone else from another club without some sort of pain. It is hard to think about parting ways with guys who we dont want to lose but that is the business we are in.

We seem like we are becoming a destination club at last so hopefully there is a big fish out there off our pier!

My point is that we were a man down in the backline all this year. May have cost us a finals spot.

We have no idea how "fresh" in the mind Melksham is...it is a massive gamble considering the whole saga is yet to be fully resolved.

And now we are chasing another one...

It's interesting you see it as a negative.

I see we have a unique opportunity to bolster our list with solid mature players low risk (now ASADA out of way), due to our next coaches experience with them (from his time at Dons) and the EFCs drug saga.

Would we have picked up Melksham, and (possibly) Hibberd in normal circumstances?

Will they make us a better team?

This is crazy even by your standards.

Why crazy?

I just don't like the fact that they are mates of Goodwins. Surely we could have looked at players from non drug taking teams who could have played during our most important season for years>

The melksham decision left us a man down all year> Hibberd could come back in any condition and may be a bust

The point being why take the risk? Now that is Crazy!

Errrrr..... The point was he's crazy for thinking that not having Melksham this year cost us a finals spot.

Yeah I know, you've posted that almost as much as your Schwab rants.

Get over it.

And you know Hibberd personally? How would you have any clue whatsoever about how interested he is?

Ridiculous as always.

Rant away now to yourself.

See i am not the only one who looks at the situation from a similar perspective Stuie.

It's just different to you...

No i do not. I have just seen so many bad decisions this club has made over a long period of time.

I certainly don't see a lot of other clubs banging down the door trying to beat us in these Essendrug trades.

So they better be the right decision...

No, the "perspective" I was looking at it from was you know nothing about football if you think adding in Melksham this year meant we would play finals.

Dawes for Daw is the trade that has cosmic implications. A trade that has been waiting many millenia to synchronistically appear. I believe it's a message, It is fate. It is Majak

Just saw afl 360 with Michael Barlow talking about doing podcasts and his career post footy, he's only 28. Seems like a good bloke and mature leader we could use for 2 or 3 years and depth at worse to replace the other non-future depth. What do we think of him?

Not worth a 1st round pick at all.

Particularly if he really doesn't want to move.

Would you give up the 2017 1st rnd pick for both Hurley & Hibberd, if they chose to come over ?

Yes but I would be wrapped if we got them for nothing (due to breach of contract)!

I heard that Hurley is after pretty significant coin...just don't think he is worth approx $750k+ a season. He is a good player but not sure he is worth that.

If we are going to give up a first rounder, I would prefer to trade with GWS who reportedly need to shed a minimum of 5 players and $600k from their books. For a first rounder you could pick up a couple of players like Ahern and Hoskin-Elliot. Talking potential but their ceiling is higher than Hurley/Hibberd in my opinion.

If the 2017 draft is as good as the hype then I would be pretty hesitant to part with it. Really tough one, but the club is in a great place where they don't have to make any rash moves to fix the list.

On a separate note, I am quite confident Tommy will stay. Thought the contract was getting closer a month or so ago but it should still work itself out.

There are certain posters here who, if voting in the US election, would definitely being voting for the most shallow, narcissistic idiot on planet Earth.

And probably passionately so.

I genuinely can't believe some of the stuff I read here from time to time.

That said, go Dees!

Fair assessment of Hillary Clinton, but could do with a few more descriptive words.

Depending on whether they wanted to walk from Essendrug or whether it was all about ca$h

it is a lot to give up. Hibberd doesn't sound like he really wants to leave the den...

The Demons cannot give up their 2017 No.1 draft pick because we used it as a future trade. Our first pick will be around no.26,not much bargaining power I would say.

We gave up this year's 1st round pick (2016 - though i'm sure that's what you meant), however, we could possibly give up next year's 1st round pick which may hold quite some value, given next year's draft is said to be superior to this one's.

Wrong.

The rule is you must make two first round selections in any four year period.

Last year we used two.

Technically we don't have to make another first round selection until 2019.

Would love to see Hoskin-Elliot at the Dees next year.

Agree, definitely has the attributes we're missing. Injury has also had it's say on his career to date.

Perfect winger for us.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
