I reckon the thinking must be they're inexperienced players, Jeffy's been around a while and should know better. But I agree. How Kent has survived as long as he has, yet Jeffy plays two bad weeks and gets dropped. Kent's played 2.5 good matches this year. Pretty poor return, IMO.

NEW Melbourne is in a position to pick a side based on form.  Casey is firing... we have others who can step up.

Even 'HE WHO MUST NOT MOVE WEST' would be dropped if he didin't follow team orders (maybe?)

I like it.... but if we lose .... I will attribute the loss to it .....indignantly!

Well, clearly not. His lack of second efforts haven't gone unnoticed, but his team mates have picked up the slack a bit. I reckon he'll bag 5+ this week and then announce a 5 year extension next week. ;)

Disagree. That WILL come back to haunt us! Jeff will be sorely needed. He loves the big occasions. I will not be delighted if he kicks a bag in the 2s. Don't know who to tip now.

The game will be won in the midfield, not by Jeffy. The tip is more likely based on whether Viney plays.

IC: Oliver - Bugg - Trengove - Grimes

If Viney doesn't get up, put Oliver in the middle and Kent comes onto the extended bench

Interesting that you have Grimes in your side, when many of the punters on this forum have written him off.  What's your rationale there?

Personally I thought Kent had a good physical presence last week, did a few other good things and I'd still have him in my side, though Harmes was no better than Kennedy got dropped for the week before and so I think he'd be the similar sized/type player to make way for Grimes.

Like Stuie, I do find your preseason reports very helpful, but you still have not given your opinion on the matter, you have said you weren't surprised.

Do you think Garlett deserves to play?

While he does get a lot of goals over the back, I would imagine we break down going forward just as often because he doesn't/cant lead at the ball carrier and we lack players capable of breaking the lines.

And the last line is that same line we hear every pre season and not even close to true. We have a list now with a bunch of list cloggers and it appears certain players have already had their papers stamped. I would struggle to find a player in the VFL team that I would want in the AFL team.

We've had a fairly good run with injuries and an easy draw, yet we are not in the 8. I expect more and like many others use this forum to voice my concern.

Negative or realist.

It doesn't matter what I think, which is true of all posters on here, what I said was he seemed to be down on form and confidence,  my opinion, so in the new MFC world he is omitted, and I am not surprised, a couple of years ago because of who he is we would have kept playing him, and possibly nearly destroyedv him, like we did with others As for your other point Roos when he came on board said it would take at least 3 years to turnaround the team, he didn't spruik a miracle   we are exactly where I thought we would be this year As for the VFL team have you watched them live    of the new young ones White and Hulett are 2 who could be fine AFL players if given the time

Its a forum discussing what we think of the changes...

Its all opinions...

Kent or harmes wouldn't have got a kick on stratton last week either.

Garlett takes the best small defender. Kent and Harmes don't. Jeff has two bad games. Kent and Harmes have had about 6 good quarters each.

Since the Club has only announced dropping Garlett (one player) and nominated seven on the extended interchange (three of whom become the emergencies after training on Saturday), this talk of dropping Harmes or Kent for Grimes or Kennedy would contradict the Club's statements now that they have said that Viney would be coming back if okay to play. If Viney is not Okay then they would be obligated to bring back Kennedy who they also made an announcement about, whereas to bring them both in as they foreshadowed, either Kent or Harmes would have to get sick/injured (& not play for Casey where they are also named). To bring in Grimes and/or Mitchie might well cop a fine. Oliver will play for the Dees and not in the back pocket for Casey where he is named.

The seven nominated on the extended interchange (four to play) are:

  • Oliver
  • Viney
  • Grimes
  • Kennedy
  • Mitchie
  • Harmes
  • Kent

If we only bring in one player (i.e. No sudden sickness/injury) then it must surely be Viney (if okay) though Kennedy is the only other option if the Club hasn't been foxing with their public announcements.

Don't understand the hysteria over Garlett at all. Kennedy was the form player for the first 5 weeks, lost some touch and went back to the twos. Smashed it in terrible conditions and earnt a recall.

Jeff is one of my favourite players but his form has been rubbish. Since when do good teams just allow that to continue when our reserves are in scintillating form? As great as he can be he isn't Rioli or even Betts for that matter that can win games of their own boot. He contributes well when in form but I can't recall him owning a game and creating a win, certainly in a long time.

But posters like picket need to be blood boiling enraged over something each week so this will have to do I guess.

I'm Not "Blood Boiling enraged" about this at all, far from it, BUT I always reckon blokes like Jeffy can kick 2 or 3 Quick goals and break a game open. Yep agree his form has not been good but since when ispur  form a guide when getting a game in this side. Some blokes get games because of size and percieved strenghts. Some of these in my view are not deserving of a game. Anyway what do I I know?? Jack Sheeeit and I don't get paid megabucks in a Million dollar industry to get selection right now do I??

My opinion, don't think Harmes will make the cut either this weekend and will be emergency.

He has been super consistent in the 2s and deserves a shot. Harmes and Kent have been poor and have been on the brink of being dropped for a while

What? no.... they could pick Michie, Viney, Kennedy, Grimes out of those 4 (i wouldn't but example) which would not be a fine. We only 'annonced' dropping Garlett technically none of the other ins or outs are finalised so they can still drop/pick any of them they want with no consern for fines. As long as its before sunday they can even bring in someone not even named! (again the probably wont)  They wouldn't even name a team untill saturday if the AFL allowed that.

Grimes, Oliver, Viney and Kennedy for me. Both Harmes and Kent need some time at Casey to reset, and Vandenberg, Kennedy and Petracca are all capable of playing similar roles. I understand the demotion of Garlett, but don't like it when others (namely Harmes and Kent) have done less for longer. Grimes should have been in the side three months ago, and is clearly the best of a poor bench (Viney aside).

Yes, Bugg could 'test' Pendles ribs to see if they are still sore:o, while giving him some lip about McQuan's claim he should be dumped as captain.

Bugg can really ruffle his feathers physically and mentally!!

I'm thinking about Jeff's spell more to do with Hogan and Collingwood's increased speed in backline. They will be onto what happened out the back last time.

Viney and Kennedy in for Harmes and Garlett.  Trac and Oliver to play more fwd. Kennedy to be mostly fwd

I'm glad we finally have some standards and have dropped Garlett.  Previously we would not have and everyone would lament his inconsistency and say we should have sent him a message.  well here it is, Jeff - lift your intensity and work rate or you'll be in the twos.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
