Whilst Kennedy undoubtedly had a bad game yesterday, I'm not sure I agree with those dropping him in front of Harmes and/or Kent. Kennedy's faster and works harder than both, even when he's having a bad day.

Harmes and Kent seem to get golden runs from the coaches, not being dropped after poor games. I'd like to see them cop a reminder that you don't get to rest on the back of one performance for a month before you have to show up the next time.

Grimes? Chance for what?

seems like the best way to revive a career is to get dropped and wait for d'landers to forget why you weren't making the team in the first place. FFS

If you write every player off after they get dropped you'll be left with about 5 players.

Grimes has displayed strong VFL form and we have too many underperforming players in the seniors.

Grimes' cards are marked, TU.

Can't see VDB coming back in at all just yet.  He's only had 1 game back with the Scorps after injury and was time-managed in that game. Didn't set the world on fire and nor should we expect him to have.  Bit premature to call him back into the firsts against the Hawks, I think.

Says who?

He's at least being named emergency right now (unlike Terlich, for example).

Hunt and Wagner are not going to make it through the remaining 12 games, a chance will arise and if we can give Michie 3 games and ANB/Newton 2 games on what they've shown so far, we can find room for Grimes.

Wagner needs 2 work harder at Casey like White 2 replace him. Grimes & Trenners deserve a go. I'd drop Harmes & a lazy Kent

I'm not saying Grimes won't play again this year. I reckon they'll try and get him to 100 games, but he'll be gone by season's end. He's clearly not in their plans, otherwise he would have been played during the first 10 rounds.

The reason he's being named as an emergency is to acknowledge his good VFL form. That's a cultural reason. Roos and co want to illustrate to the playing group that if you perform, you'll be in the mix, but it's a show IMO.

OUT : O.Mac, Kent, Kennedy, Garland, Newton

IN: Dawes, Frost, Dunn, Trengove, Oliver

If Viney is banned then either Kennedy stays in or Grimes replaces him

Frost to Ceglar, Dunn to O'Brian, T.Mac to Gunston, Jetta to Rioli, Hunt to Puopolo, Wagner to Breust

Will probably end up being - IN: Grimes

                                              OUT: Newton

Unfortunately, if we take out Kent and Kennedy we lose quite a lot of pace from our half forwardline, which is pretty much the backbone of our game, outside of the midfield. I think one of them will be in the gun, but not both of them. Frost may well come back in and play a forward role though.

Grimes deserves a game.  Perhaps his papers are stamped post 2016, but we should be playing the team that gives is the best chance to win. And this week Grimes is a better option than our tired kids.  He will be hungry to play seniors, and who knows maybe he has improved in his time down at Casey?

I disagree. He's showed far more often than not that he's a liability with ball in hand. We already Tom McDonald running around back there. We don't need Grimes doing the same. But each to their own.

Spencer should come into the side, he would provide more than just 5 minutes relief in the ruck (particularly if our defensive zone is built around midfield clearances then a second ruck becomes imperative).  Max resting up forwards is a serious target (he is a goal kicker) that would prevent oppositions double teaming Hogan and if they do, then Watts (who is a better shot at goal) becomes a very very dangerous target.  Spencer up forward would bring the ball to ground, bringing our smalls into the game.

Agree. I wished they'd brought Spencer into the side to help Gawn a few games ago. Gawn needs more assistance with 3rd man up and he's obviously tiring. Most of the upcoming opposition teams play 2 rucks as well. It' pretty clear that other than Pedo, the other assistant Ruck options aren't really working. And yep Gawn does well in the forward line.

It is early in the week and we may see injuries and suspensions. At this stage I would look at:

Jetta Frost Grimes

Vince T McDonald Wagner

Stretch Tyson Bugg

Petracca Hogan Kennedy

Garlett Watts Pedersen

Gawn N Jones Viney

Harmes Hunt Michie Oliver

IN Pedersen Frost Grimes Trengove Michie

OUT Kent O McDonald Garland (inj.) Neal-Bullen Newton

Kent was diabolical in the first half against Port and his disposal is shocking. Trade bait IMO. Pedersen is the best replacement IMO.

O McDonald is a 2017 story at best. He needs to get stronger and more intensity in his game. He might benefit from AFL experience, but we need to grow a winning culture. Time to give Frost a go in the backline.

Garland’s injury saved Wagner from getting dropped. Grimes to come in and play on Rioli or Breust.

Neal-Bullen just hasn’t had an impact. I think it is time to give Trengove another shot at the big time on the MCG.

I prefer Michie to Newton.

Tom McDonald often ignores the obvious safe choice in favour of a risky switch across half-back to a contest. It's not smart football because the opposition rebounds and goals. We have many dumb footballers in our team. Maybe some of the players like Tom McDonald are a little too arrogant for their own good?

Mr Skuit, you are a wise man no doubt.

Do you have a babel fish? Or are you endowed with powers beyond that of mere mortals?

PS:- Are you near Siem Riep?

I actually cancelled my plans yesterday (my girlfriend has a birthday every year so it wasn't really an issue) and committed my entire Sunday to deciphering the encrypted message in the hope of cracking the key to allied victory. It appears the opposition forces may be targeting self-destructive weaknesses in our defense systems.

Grimes has been dominating at Casey, playing the same brand of attacking footy the seniors are implementing.

It's too convenient to remember JG's clangers under the older game style and not give him the opportunity to show his wares under the new.

He deserves a game based on form alone.

Not sure how many posters here saw the game....but the amount of changes and teams selected in this thread - astounding how many have left Viney in. Three of four connected punches to Eberts face will see him ruled out. Very disappointing given the games coming up.

I reckon he'll cop a decent fine but not get rubbed out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's not been suspended before so there's a bonus to begin with and they were open-handed slaps (intentional I know) with little impact.

I think he'll play.

I think you are seeing things, HT.  Just have to see how much/little Ebert's head moves after each one.

If they were punches, Ebert would've;

a. been knocked out

b. been bleeding

c. not been in any state to retaliate

d. all of the above

Yes, the other Power players came in after the event, but it wasn't even a melee.  If they were punches thrown, it would've been on for young and old.

Should get off, and I would say that regardless of who he plays for.  It was a brain fart, and his punishment was a goal against.  That's all it deserved (other than a Roos bake at some stage).

I'm only going off what the commentators said. The vision of it isn't clear enough, is it not?

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
