Even our ex coach believes this is how you need to view the situation.

I would expect some indication sooner rather than later.

Yesterday's disposal by us, was as poor as I can recall.

Weideman was invisible and Watts couldn't get near it either.  Further proof that our forward line wasn't given an opportunity to impose themselves on the game yesterday.

His last month, as you say, has been poor and he needs to work on his kicking over the summer.  But the rest of his year, especially in the first half, was fantastic.  That can't be forgotten in all of this.

If his heart is at the Melbourne Football Club, he should re sign with the club as soon as possible.

Surely we know by now that the later players put off contract talks (Scully, Frawley, Ablett, Dangerfield, etc etc), the more likely they are not staying.

We all love the kid and hope he stays and wins us premierships in the next how many years, but we have to make the best decision for the club. If it involves trading him while his currency is high, we shouldn't be scared of it.

So answer is.. he's got to let us know! Don't drag it until next season.

The difference is all the players you mentioned were out of contract/free agents at the end of the season in which they left their respective clubs. Hogan has another year to run and has no obligation to re-sign. 

I think it's a really poor decision to dangle the threat of being traded to a player just because they have chosen not to extend their contract when they still have a year to run.

People seem to be forgetting that Hogan is signed until the end of 2017.

If he is still unsigned by round 1 2017 it is extremely likely he leaves. I think it'll be decided by trade week though one way or another.

I don't understand the panic with Jesses contract. At the end of 2017 he will be a RFA and another club will need to trade for him anyway. 

Unless he requests a trade i dont understand all the fuss.

Nope, isn't a RFA. Even if the year he spent with us in 2013 counted towards FA (I don't think it does) he'd still only have been here for 5 years.

Might be unpopular but the club needs him to commit before trade week or trade him to Freo now whilst they have some damn good currency in pick 3.

This whole thread is proof that the Rising Star award just heaps a shed-load more pressure on a second year player.

If we don't keep Hogan then we will watch him become one of the games best forwards in another clubs colours.

I love this throw away "he needs to work on his kicking over summer". He needed to work on his kicking all bloody year. In recent years there have been a number of players (key forwards from other clubs) who have struggled with shots on goal for years, is Hogan the exception and can  fix his issues over 1 summer, we all hope so but what if he doesn't.

If he hasn't signed before trade week I'd want to know why ( as a club) . I just can't see us ( the Dees, a somewhat more savvy Dees) allowing it to not be sorted , one way or another by then. 

Good if he stays and gets his mojo on.  Fine if he goes and facilitates an A grade mid to us. 

It is after all , about a team. He ain't a team.

We can play ok and win games without him. We shouldn't be ever focussed nor reliant on one player.

Now it's his Play. Be interesting to see what he and the club do.

I agree, I don't think the club will let it get to trade period with no signature. I've harped on it but he needs to sign an extension or go to Freo and let us plan without him.

I can't believe some of the critics, Jesse is a second year player, he's still miles ahead of any key forward i can remember in their second year in the modern history of the comp and he's definitely been down this year. 

Jesse will enjoy some time off, come back in shape, get his goal kicking sorted and i am backing him to kick 60 next year and get his contract sorted somewhere in between now and round 1, i reckon if he's going to request a trade he'll do it this off season.

Agree he is 21 and in his second year. he wouldn't be the first player to suffer 2nd year blues. I think his development will come from player further up field which ill demand he run and lead up instead of sitting in the square and going 1 on 1. I worry for next year with so many of the young guns coming into their 2nd tear next year and having similar struggles.

And if people want to classify it as 'second year blues', I've never seen second year blues as good as this.

True that, 15 possessions, 7 marks and 2 goals per game, 41 total for the season.  And this despite his last 6 games bringing just 3 goals, 11 behinds.

Easy to forget hes still just 21, doesn't turn 22 until February.   Next season and beyond he will be unstoppable, and hopefully its in a  Demons jumper.
