I just used Geelong as an example.....They had a shock loss as well.......I wasn't going into the history books.....We are on the same wins as them and Hawthorn, Coll, Richmond, west coast, Adelaide etc etc.

I was listening and agreed. We need to turn a corner. Turning a corner doesn't necessarily mean finals or being the best team in the comp. Our corner is simply playing consistently good football for more than one week. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when winning 2 in a row is a gauge of how much you have improved, but it is what it is.

We were awful on Saturday and well below best. Part of that goes on the leaders and those that were complacent, the other on the coaches for selecting underdone young blokes, or keeping underdone young blokes in the squad. I suspect a lighter training week went ahead this week.

Again, many are attacking Denham. Take him out of the equation. 

He wasn't the one who coughed up 4 points last Saturday with a dismal display. He wasn't the one who "gave up" when it got too hard or when the game was up for grabs.

Until this group of players and coaches know when to stand up when it gets tough, we'll remain insignificant. 

You reckon the AFL look to Melbourne first seventeenth to fill their Friday night fixtures? No.

Spot on about Denham RTG ( as you usually are about matters football). Unfortunately, however, the [censored] was correct about our performance against Essendon.

Last week's game was strange for me BBO. Caught the train home and felt more flat than raging. Didn't do the normal stuff we all do; graffiti the train and smash the windows of cars in my street. Just went home, resigned.

Tell that to the thousands of supporters who now won't sign up as members because of that rubbish last week. Lost for another year and another step towards never coming back. Tell that to the kids embarrassed to support the Demons at school because of the [censored] they have to constantly defend/put up with.

I'm a rusted on tragic so the performance is irrelevant to whether I sign up again. But in the wider footy community and for those tossing up whether they would bother or starting to pay attention after we were seemingly on the right path that would just make them go pfft and turn away again.

You can't compare us to other clubs because our situation is nothing like any other club. We have baggage and history that we need to overcome both on and off field. Losing games like last week is another cut to the psyche of the club, on its own just a minor wound but a thousand will kill us.

Thousands???    Really....because of one game?   How many signed on when we beat Geelong last year?? Maybe 50 ?

If you expected a consistent season from this side maybe you were wrong.   It is terribly disappointing I agree, but there is another 20 games to go

Excuses of players feeling tired are false - a slap in the face to all in sundry - and will not be tolerated by the Board. Nor should they.

May the the next 2-3 weeks be SIGNIFICANT performances and wins! Leaders need to recognise, stand up, deliver and collectively want to strive for the ultimate in football. It's not just about being competitive - it's about excelling in the competition.

I'd hope they wouldn't be tolerated by the Board, but who knows. I certainly wouldn't think they'd be tolerated by PJ. At least, that performance wouldn't have been tolerated twelve months ago. This Board may well have some tough decisions to make in the next 24 months.

Interesting post this, mate. Whilst I completely agree, to me it implies that the Essendon loss has to be the line in the sand moment and in retrospect would become almost 'the loss we had to have'. Of course, I don't believe this now as last weekend was in the top five most pitiful MFC performances (186, 148 and then that game), but I wouldn't have believed we'd win the first 5-6 games anyway, however if that loss causes something to stir in the bellies of these players and gets them on the right track, then fantastic.

But a part of me still wants blood for last week, no matter what we do for the rest of the season. This group hadn't even earned my trust fully and now they're coming from a long way back. The FD that I did trust has a lot of work to do to regain my trust. The selections, the comments by Misson saying Garlett would 'definitely' play etc. If we don't start to see improvement soon, PJ will need to make some big calls, just like in any other business.

Yes mate, thousands. The Geelong game is irrelevant in those conversation, that happened in June/July when no one buys memberships. This was round 2 when people are still tossing up whether to fork out or not. many many supporters would've read the preseason and post round 1 press with interest but a cynical eye. After last week they would've just thought "nothings changed" and gone back to indifference/apathy/waiting again til next year/maybe never.

Consistency is one thing last week had nothing to do with consistency when you're facing a clearly inferior opponent and let them dictate the game from bell to bell.

You can't seriously think that losing to an undermanned Essendon, the team that would be winless this season, won't impact negatively upon membership. I'd say it will have a disastrous effect. As I said shortly after the game, any slim chance we had of reaching 40,000 members went up in smoke last Saturday. It was demoralising. Essendon were our [censored] (minus 148  ). They were a club that couldn't even beat one of the worst teams we've ever fielded. Conversely, our team couldn't beat one of the weakest teams they've probably ever fielded. Hopeless.

I spent last week bemoaning those bandwagon supporters coming back, but a week later, I wouldn't begrudge any of them for staying home for the rest of the season. Frankly, our players and coaches don't deserve to have any of us attending.

Seeing Essendon predictably smashed tonight and Toumpas gathering 28 disposals has only drawn out and amplified the disgracefulness of last Saturday's performance. It'd be comical if I was a supporter of any other club.

Wow. That was that game? I wonder how different things would have been. I'm still waiting for someone of Roos' stature to come in and really transform the culture at the club. He might have done a bit, but Saturday proved there's still a pitiful underbelly residing at our club.

Agree. Just as I was somewhat beginning to move on, tonight's game brought back the sick sinking feeling of just how bad we were/are and how unacceptable that performance was last week. How much progress we unwound. 

This week's game can't come quick enough, expecting nothing less than some positivity and redemption.
