Watching clubs like Hawthorn, Geelong and Sydney consistently being able to top up their lists without dropping from contention is a complete farce and against the spirit of the game as far as I am concerned.

 

But before I sign off I wanted to say a big thank you to all those that contribute to this forum.

 

I have greatly enjoyed the incredible amount of passion and insightful input provided by the majority of posters. As someone who has been living overseas the last few years with limited opportunities to see the Dees play on the hallowed turf of the MCG I have found the forum to be a great resource. Particularly, the training reports which help keep the fires burning during the off season.

 

I hope you all continue to keep the passion going and I hope the club will (eventually) turn things around and become a finals team once again.

Yes the rule tampering is a joke but I think they might finally have it right, some of the games in the first two rounds have been great. 

By all means stick it up Sydney and the farce that is COLA but what has Geelong and Hawthorn done outside of the rules? Our players could learn from this clubs.

Jacksons going to find it hard enough to put bums on seats after the football department's abject failure yesterday, so despite the best efforts of the players yesterday, think I'll stick with them a while longer.

Understand where Ascobar is coming from.

I can take defeat by a side more talented and well drilled than us but to be beaten by a side on work rate, desperation and a want for the contest which are something we should be bringing in spades after where we have been for a decade is damning.

Losing games like yesterday's hit me harder than some of the spankings we have copped by the top sides over the past seasons.

Just being AFL players seem to be enough for too many of our squad, and the want to continually improve is just not present.

Normally I would agree with your sentiments although not with your logic or dismissive attitude to disgruntled and disillusioned Demon supporters. But in the case of Ascobar your comments are a little unwarranted. As others have pointed out one the main things he emphasized in his post was to praise the passion and insight of many of the posters on Demonland. I concur with his comments and his choice of favorite posters although there are a few others whose dedication and insights make Demonland worth reading.

And he also raises legitimate concerns about the way Australian football has recently developed. I share many of these concerns and suggest that all Melbourne supporters should at least be aware of the way the administration of the game is trending. That is, in my opinion, the development of a two tiered or defacto relegation system and Melbourne gets the short straw in this situation. 

However, the main reason I wish to respond to your and other similar comments is more in the hope that you may have some understanding of the Ascobar's situation which I completely relate to. In my case I have been a member of the MFC for about 38 years. When I lived in Melbourne I would attend most of their games. In 1992 I moved interstate but still watched most games on TV and managed to get to a few games a year as well as holding positions in the local Demons supporter group. So I really don't think my past  loyalty and devotion to the club can be questioned.

Like Ascobar, I moved overseas last year and I can relate to his present outlook. I don't  have the opportunity to watch Melbourne play live and of course the  tyranny of distance precludes me from attending games. I did subscribe to the AFL live webcast last year but found it useless and a complete waste of money as I couldn't get one single game live. The website itself is so arcane that I found it impossible to contact the AFL to rectify the situation. So once bitten twice shy and this year I rely on snippets from the free to air AFL website, the Fairfax Press the club and of course Demonland for my fix. But I am living in a country which neither knows or cares very much about Australian football much less the Melbourne Football Club. Interaction with other supporters is limited to emails. Under these circumstances it becomes difficult to accurately discern the reality of the teams's situation from the wild overoptimism during the preseason So it is almost inevitable that when you are so isolated that your enthusiasm starts to wane, especially after yesterday's debacle .

So I think that Ascobar's considered post was worthy of a more balanced response than "Careful not to knock the bong over on your way out the door." and "Real fans stick fat"

I am a lifetime supporter and am in my 14th consecutive year as a Redleg member. I lived in Melbourne but moved to Sydney five years ago and currently live in Cronulla. Up until 12 months ago my work took me all over the country, ironically in 2014 I spent the majority of the year working in Melbourne and was able to attend about 9 games. I have also spent a lot of time in the Hunter Valley. I've lost track of the amount of pubs I've asked for the AFL to be put on only to have the smallest TV in the room put on without volume and yet I still manage to make more noise than punters that have gathered to watch the league. In the last 12 months I've been back in Sydney full time and have worked more than my share of weekends. I will often take my earphones in or just have the phone In my top pocket with radio on then try to steal a glance through the live game app when it permits. 

In short we all do our bit. 

Take a break from the game but don't walk away for ever. Whether I like it or not I'm addicted to the game and this club.

It was refreshing to hear some commentators on Friday night attack his game. Loitering around the back of packs for the cheap handball receives. 

Something I noticed last year a lot in Richmond's game and Cotchin isn't alone in doing it is, dropping at the slightest hint of contact hoping to have the tackler fall into their back and the picking up of the ball then run with their head down hoping to draw contact. To the umpires credit they did start to wise up to this last year.

Have to say I was very dissappointed on Saturday night then a good friend who is a Tigers supporter came around and we drowned our sorrows and on Monday morning the sky is blue and I still think we will win 10 games in 2016.

I might add that a regular on here and a supporter for 50 years has taken Ascobars path.

Likewise, I'm a life time supporter (since the late 50's) and a long time member who has been living in Sydney (Dulwich Hill) since 1979. Everytime I followed an NRL team they got hung up to dry (Newtown, Norths and Souths (who did a Lazarus) so I've given league a miss these days, but I've always stuck fat with the Dees through thick and thin.  

Having said that, I can understand why someone would want to step away from the hysteria that takes over on these forums and in the media...and the sniping that goes on as a result (evident in this thread)... seriously, we lost a game (emphasis on the word "game") that we were expected to win easily...talk about first world problems!
