One thing that really stood out was our fitness.  In both games we've run them out really well and that bodes well for the season ahead.

Oliver, Bugg and Kennedy have all been handy recruits and guys like Vince and Jones will be better for the run.

Our turnovers still kill us and we had 50, yes 50, clangers, but I can't see us doing that when the real stuff begins.

What? Against the odds? We played a VFL side.

And you reckon we had our best side in? It was a VFL side v VFL side.

I haven't been well all weekend and slept through most of the game. It was obviously never in doubt that we would win of course.

Melbourne 0.10.12.72 defeated Footscray 1.7.9.60.

This combination of fox footy callers would have to be the worst ever! Tony Shaw should only be allowed to do special comments only if he gives the via sign language!

Some good signs today as well as some things that need tightening up.

Good work boys happy that they pilled on the pressure at the end.

Whilst our skills weren't great our attack on the ball and man particularly after half time was good.

Watts needs to play 3rd forward all year. I reckon Oliver, Bugg and Matt Jones locked themselves spots for round 1.

Still about 4-5 spots up for grabs round 1 including one each on a half flank, back flank and wing.

Skill execution will be much better when not playing in a wind tunnel and once we trim to starting 22.

We have been training all  pre season with a guy called Hogan as the focal point of the attack, take him out and from what I could tell in the first 3/4 the forward structure fell over, finally got it right in the last, we need to practice this

Before that goal, i was going to say that Tyson has been good today.

Now i will definitely say it.

Still get's caught, but his work around the pack has been solid.

Wasn't caught once today.

Matt Granland was very good, much better than most Fox commentators.

Wasnt able to see the game, but looks like a nice comeback And I assume Watts is finally being played in the position he should have been played in his entire career.

Now the important question -  how many rotations did we use?

Couldn't agree more.

The first quarter are skills were deplorable kicking against the wind but when the doggies did it. It was the windy conditions not the skills.

Bloody septic tankers.

Well that's just disrespectful to the pretty much full strength team we just fielded, barring Hogan and injuries.

Exactly what I was thinking.  We had something like 136 last week to Port who had around 90.  I can understand why though.  The best way to build a winning culture is to build belief, and the best way of building belief is to start winning games.

We were very close to full strength.

On paper, but not on the ground for the whole match. Hunt, Wagner, Mitchie and at least a couple of the others aren't going to be starting Round 1. There were passages when we had a fairly inexperienced side out there. Not to mention players like Jones and Vince having their first match for the year, and it showed.

On the commentators, I think Matt Granland must be replacing everybody's favourite Dwayne Russell, as he replaced him on Thursday night as well. If so, that was definitely the biggest positive to come out of the day.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
