I think it's pretty unfair on the Brisbane Lions that Essendon get pick 1 this year, they're going to welcome back several very good AFL players from suspension, the Lions get a couple back from injury, but they've been genuinely awful this year, where as the Bombers have hamstrung themselves by attempting to cheat, if the AFL were set on giving Essendon a pick this year, they should have set it before the season started at say pick 5,6 or 7 and not allowed it to compromise the pointy end of the draft,

I haven't been a huge fan of the Brisbane Lions playing the victim like they have and sooking it up when we applied for a priority pick, but geez it's a big oversight on the AFL's part to allow Essendon pick 1, i reckon they nearly have to grant the Lions a PP on this basis because the difference between pick 1 and 2 can be huge, and they are genuinely the worst team/list in the AFL.

People will celebrate if the Bombers come back and play finals next year but i personally will mark it as one of the most transparent and disappointing acts of a league putting $$ ahead of the integrity of the sport, clean sport and the integrity of the contest that i can remember in Australian sporting history.

I am sure they've had their part to play in retaining Hurley and Hooker, both looked certain to leave

agree. i don't remember storm getting any priority after they were forced to play a whole season for zero points. terrible logic at play here.

The AFL have done everything they can to make sure these penalties have as little impact on their revenue as possible, i wonder if it were a side like North Melbourne with less than half Essendons members if they'd have made the same effort?

Essendon supporters still can't believe the CAS verdict was so different to the AFL tribunal but to me that exposes and confirms the AFL playing games and trying to sweep things under the rug, and does it in a very public way, the contrasting results are a bad reflection on the AFL, not on CAS or ASADA

seems essendon's assets have been largely unaffected. there was an article in the media in last few days showing the asset value of all clubs. guess who was comfortably on top.

It's absolutely disgusting! this should have bought them to the brink of extinction and right now it's difficult to argue it hasn't been a huge advantage! they've been able to get a heap of top end picks over the last two years and get some games into them.

they're going to rise back up the ladder very quickly and i find that truly frustrating. the AFL had a chance to make a stand and all they've done is shaken the confidence of every supporter in the game that the game isn't riddled with corruption.

Watching jared tallent go back to back hopefully in the 50k walk after having a BS medal ceremony in his backyard because he was beaten across the line in london by a drug cheat makes me happy and angry at the same time.

He shouldnt have had to wait 4 years.

Neither should mitchell or cotchin whatever you think of them

Sadly I have lost interest in the Olympics. The drugs, corruption and politics of the event have led me to switch off. (I did watch some of the swimming.)

I hope that the evils that exist at Olympic level sport do not expand in the AFL beyond the EFC or I may be lost to the AFL as well.

Thankfully there is netball, perhaps one of few untainted sports.

Its not as good without Roy & HG covering it...

That's a very good example - hadn't thought about it in that way.

Fair enough but it's impossible to get excited by competitive walking.

On the slo mo replays it is obvious they are all lifting both feet. Some egregiously, some subtly, but they all do it.

It doesn't have a decent rationale for existing (competitive walking??? what next, competitive yoga?), and no one follows the supposed rules anyway.

It should go into the basket of fake sports such as trampolining, anything where you need to wear makeup, and synchronised everything.

Then again wonder what Bolt is doing after the Olympics? We could put him on the Rookie list, he could just run the ball out of the backline all day!

You can pencil the game in now.

Actually, feel free to use permanent ink. AFL management bonuses are at stake.

Well the AFL, and Gill in particular have bent over backwards to minimize any negative effects on 'their brand' and on the cheating bastards, so I wouldn't put anything past them.  Reward them with ANZAC Day games, prime time fixtures, unimpaired draft picks, possibly a priority, top up players. ?

I can't speak for what happens in Jamaica, but every medallist at an Olympic Games is tested as are winners (and other placegetters?) at World Athletic Championships. Your inference that we should be suspicious of Jamaican athletes who have never been found guilty of doping is an unfortunate by-product of a general suspicion of all high performing athletes.

on a different issue i have read of essendon offering contracts to some of their top-up players. i would have thought with the return of the banned players, all the top-up players would have to go back into the draft.........not that i'm saying any would be particularly appealing

Tipungwiti (spelling) has signed an extension already.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
